Summary: Tenchi Muyo OVA DVD: An Anime Fan's Dream Come True
Review: It is impossible to put fully into words what Pioneer has done with this unbelievable (and totally complete) box set. Basically, they have taken an all-time favorite anime .. given it a digital remastering, along with Dolby 5.1 Japanese tracks (subtitled wonderfully I might add), along with a great job on the English dubbing, all 13 OVA Episodes, an interactive encyclopedia for Tenchi Fanatics and an unbeatable price. The animation is beautiful in the DVD format and extremely clear, which brings vibrant new life into this anime classic. Pretty much I would recommend this to any anime fan who hasn't seen the series yet (you really have no idea what you're missing out on!) or any Tenchi fan who would like to see this series in its ideal format. If you are new to the anime DVD scene like I am, make sure you put this set on your list of "to buy" collections ^_^ You won't be disapointed!

Summary: No Need for Reviews
Review: This is by far one of the best anime series. This OAV (direct to video) set started the Tenchi DVD universe. There are three different sets in the series Tenchi. First there is the Tenchi OAV (this), the Tenchi TV series (No Need for . . . titles), and then Tenchi in Tokyo. Follow these series are the three movies, however, THIS is the best of all of them. Also if you have seen Tenchi on Cartoon Network, this is the uncut version of it. There is brief nudity in this series.The title, in English, means "No Need for Tenchi," however, anyone that knows the series knows that everyone needs Tenchi. The story starts when Ryoko (the best character out of the whole anime) is accidentally freed from the shrine that imprisoned her by Tenchi. Boy, does Tenchi regret that he did that for Ryoko decides to take revenge on Tenchi because it was Tenchi ancestor (grandfather) that impressed her in there 700 years ago (yes I said 700). Following Ryoko, other strange alien characters start to "fall" (and I do mean fall) into Tenchi's life. The story arc was well done and neatly woven together. My only problem is that when the story ends, it doesn't seem complete. It seems like at the end of episode 13, the series is just getting warmed up and not ending. Nonetheless, I still give this series five stars because there are two other Tenchi series to watch, even though they are not a good or as well planed.

Summary: Tenchi Muyo Title secret revealed!!!!
Review: No need for Tenchi is the rough translation of the 13 episode original OVA. The explanation is simple. Yes, everyone needs Tenchi but... In the final battle with Kagato, Tenchi the boy realizes that he has the power within himself to defeat the villain. Tenchi casts aside the 'key', the sword named Tenchi that controls the power of Tsunami, and uses his own power instead. This explains the curious title wording rather nicely. In every sense, Tenchi Muyo is an epic story of a pure knight, raised far from the corruption of a decaying empire. Tenchi is identical to the pure knight of the King Arthur legends, the one knight who can search for the Holy Grail of that legend. Everything else that happens is a form of temptation that will test Tenchi's will to survive a pack of girl friends and remain pure and true to his heritage. Tenchi is the ONLY Jurian who can create the Three Wings of the Lighthawk - tapping into some unexplained univesal power. We also have hints that Ryoko, when she wears the three gems, could equal Tenchi in power. If only everyone could enjoy this series on the original Pioneer laserdisc... It is a joy to behold.

Review: INTRODUCTION:
Although the Tenchi Muyo anime series became a massive hit in its native Japan and other neighboring nations, it was never fortunate enough to gain that kind of success in the United States. That's a real shame, because this is one of the best anime series out there. It DID air briefly in America on the Cartoon Network, but it never really won the audiences over the way series like Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z did. But this series is every bit as good as the animes that DID achieve fame in America. Read on for my review of this set. BASIC PLOT:
It's hard to describe this series because there are so many twists and turns in the plot, but I'll try my best. The story follows a young man named Tenchi Masaki, who has just returned to school from a long break. Soon enough, he meets up with a rather strange cast of characters, and discovers that he may be the last hope for saving the universe! To make things even more difficult for him, many of these strange characters he has met fall in love with him, and this creates some competition amongst them that results in some rather comical scenes. SERIES OPINIONS:
Why is this series so underrated in America? This is one of the best animes out there. It combines the samurai-style action of Dragon Ball Z with the romance/slapstick humor stylings of Sailor Moon, and this creates a series that is universally appealing. And believe me, over time this series will grow on you. THE DUB:
Surprisingly, the dub version of this series isn't that bad. A few scenes have been mistranslated or toned down for American audiences, but it's nothing major like with other animes. Here's a little tip, if you're curious about what has been changed - while you're watching the Japanese subtitled version of the DVD, hit the Audio button on your DVD remote and switch to the dub track. This way you can watch the English dub with the English subtitles for the Japanese version - there's no better way to see how different some of the translations are! DVD:
Once again, DVDs featuring an uncut dub and an uncut sub have been released. This is great because you get both versions of the series. There are also some bonus features as well, including a Tenchi encyclopedia which contains varios information on the series (and since a series like this can be confusing at first, it's good to have some extra information.) A major flaw of this set, though, is that the Mihoshi special is missing. For the price the company is charging for this set, it's insulting not to include it! OVERALL:
Overall this is an excellent DVD set, and it's good to have all thirteen episodes of this classic series in one place. Still, the DVDs could have been done a little better. If you're an anime fan, this is a strongly recommended release.

Summary: Tenchi Muyo OAV is great, but lacks a little in the end
Review: Tenchi Muyo OAV complete in a two CD compilation,....Finally! It seems that someone finally had the bright idea to sell them as a package deal for all of us Tenchi addicts going through withdrawal watching the cut-up, edited, kiddy friendly versions of Tenchi episodes on Cartoon Network. The series introduces and defines story lines and characters richly (the Goofy yet lovable Tenchi, the bratty Ayeka, the seemingly always naked Ryoko, the cute mysterious Sasami, devious "little" Washu, and the blundering Mihoshi (and who could ever forget our favorite cabbit, Ryo-Ohki?!)) However, the writers for this Tenchi series seemed to use all their creativity in the first 6 episodes of the 13 episode collection. Episodes 7 and 8 ("The Night Before The Carnival" and "Hello Baby") spiral downhill from the climactic battle with the evil Kagato and leave the viewer aching for even a little bit of action. I'm sorry but I'd rather have the gang fighting a ruthless villain than changing dirty diapers. The plot picks up again slightly in episode 9 when Sasami's secret relationship with Tsunami is revealed, but once again the story line falls short with episodes 10 and 11 involving Dr. Clay and at some times even border on sexual deviancy (probably a ploy to rekindle interest). As well, the final episode of the series, "Here Comes Jurai", is so off the wall that it doesn't seem to connect to the other 12 episodes and has such an open ending that I popped in the bonus CD thinking there might be another episode on it, or at least an explanation. All in all, this series is only mediocre to a viewer who have seen more front-line mainstream anime. However, you cannot judge the Tenchi Muyo series on these grounds, you can only look at it for what is truly is, a beginning. This series is the heart and soul of all other Tenchi media and is, in its own right, a masterpiece of animation.

Summary: Now this is what I call animation.
Review: Tenchi is the story of a teenage boy who has his life turned up side down by a group of alien women. These alien women all fall in love with and eventually end up living with him in the same house some where in the country. The main players in the series are a five thousand year old space pirate named Ryoko, the crown princess of the planet Jurai named Ayeka and her little sister Sasami, the universes most brilliant mad scientist named Washu, and a galaxy police officer named Mihoshi. As if that's not bad enough things get worse for poor Tenchi when his grandfather Kashuhito reveal secrets about his past and origin. Thenchi is one of those series where the character development and animation are executed so well that you forget you are watching an animated series. The characters are very likeable and seem to actually have real lives and emotions. This 3 disk box set contain 13 episode of high quality animation on 2 disks. The two disks with the episodes on them are presented in THX. The original japanese audio is presented in 5.1 digital. The english audio is presented in 2.0 digital. The english audio is very good. Not only are the english actors actually good but even the theme songs are dubbed in english on the dubbed track. Disk 3 contains the Tenchi encyclopedia v3.0. The Tenchi encyclopedia contains interviews, video trailers, concept drawings, character bios, and much more. This box set contains medium violence, nudity, and sexually suggestive situations.

Summary: The Most Original and Best of the Tenchi Timelines
Review: This Tenchi Muyo - OAV Set is the timeline that is truest to how its creator originally intended. Although the other alternate timelines, Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo are entertaining, the OAV timeline is the most compelling and has much more depth in meaning and leaves much more open to future development. In fact the continuation of the Tenchi Muyo series now just airing in Japan is following where this OAV series left off. This timeline reveals the nature of Tenchi, Ryoko and Washu in the most cohesive explanation. It leaves far greater room for character growth than in Tenchi Universe or Tenchi in Tokyo. Tenchi is revealed relatively early on to have extraordinary depth of powers that are only just being tapped. Ryoko is allowed to show much depth in character. Introduced as a destructive demon woman, we see some very vunerable sides of her character and a very unique relationship with Washu. Washu is subtlely hinted to have great wisdom and some hidden powerful side to her well beyond her scientific genius. Even Princess Sasami is shown to have some very special secret hidden power. The main downside to this timeline is that so much is left open that you are left at the end feeling like you have watched only the first volume in a triology. The bad news is that the OAV sequel is only just coming out in Japan and therefore it may be years before a dubbed version hits the US. If you haven't seen any of the other Tenchi timeline DVD sets, this is definitely the one to start with.

Summary: See Tenchi as it was intended! Not for kids!
Review: This DVD set collects the excellent 1st and 2nd TENCHI MUYO! OAVs. For those who watched TENCHI on Caroon Network you may not want to buy this. This collects the series in it's original, unedited form. Nudity, risque talk, naughty touch, and lots of Saki pop up throughout. Not to mention Nurse Washu in it's entirety. Which alone is worth the price of this set. For those left, this is one of the best anime series of all time. The animation is top-quality. The best seen anywhere. The characters are funny and they do actually have depth and progress as the series plays out. Something practically unheard of in American animation. While a comedy their are serious and dramtic moments. This is the story of Tenchi, a curious teenage boy, who one summer sneaks into a cave against his grandfathers wishes. What happenes next is a chain of events involving a mummified space pirate, a loney princess, a clutzy space officer, and a thousand year old genius in a child's body living with and longing after Tenchi. Their's lots of secrets to be learned about all the characters.
Not all the secrets. This series ends with room for a 3rd OAV which should be coming out this year. So if you love anime, space adventures, love-triangles, and sexual humor this series is for you.

Summary: Not to quibble, but . . .
Review: . . . I'm going to quibble. In the editorial review above, the reviewer says that the Tenchi OVA reunites the cast of the TV show, but that's not so. The OVA was the original; the TV series "Tenchi Universe" and "Tenchi Tokyo" came afterward and made some radical changes in the plot lines, characters, and histories. The original Tenchi OVAs are far superior to the different TV series, movies, and specials. OVA 1 is episodes 1-6, OVA 2 is episodes 6-13, and OVA 3 is slowly being released at the time of this writing. The character relationships and backstory are far better in the OVA. The more that's revealed about the galaxy-wide civilizations that are hinted at in the series, and the more infomation that is revealed about earth's place in this scheme, the more fascinating this saga becomes. So much anime doesn't make you think and want to dig for detail. The Tenchi OVAs are so deep and complex that it seems that the stories should never end.

Summary: My favorite anime
Review: Tenchi is my favorite anime, right up there tied with Trigun. My favorite thing about it is the fact that it doesnt TRY to carry on a long and confusing storyline. Instead, it simply is full of many adventures that while fun at the time, all add up for an incredible experience that has some great character development.
It starts out with tenchi going into the shrine that his grandfather has been keeping him away from. Tenchi unwittingly sets the demon Ryoko loose from her prison! All i can say now is that for the next 3 or 4 episodes hilarious encounters and various new girls end up lodging at tenchi's house.
All the characters get their moment in the spotlight, but mostly Ryoko, Ayeka, Sasami, and Tenchi. Mihoshi is full of comic relief for the crew, but then again, everybody provides that. This is a series that doesnt take itself seriously. However, there are a few tear jerker moments that make you think, but overall, most of the stuff is played for laughs.
The music is great, probably because it's not a TV based series. The animation is good, and the dubbing is right on. The series spans 13 episodes, but each one has a different length, adding up to 7 hours, whereas most 13 episode animes are about 5 hours long. So you get more! By the end of the series, most plot threads are tied up nicely, and it leaves room for more. (and there is more coming out later this year!) It can be expanded by reading the 'No Need for Tenchi' manga series as well.
Overall, this is a great series, full of hilarious and serious thought provoking moments. Tenchi Universe is good too, not to mention longer, and even has an extra character Kiyone! That series is a great one with many awesome movie spin offs, but it's about 4 stars compared to the original. (It's also a bit more watered down.)
This series is probably recommended for the teenage crowd. Nudity, sexual situations and humor are all over, and a small amount of language is there too. Tenchi Universe has only a few of these moments and is geared more for the 10+ age group. If you buy this anime, you wont regret it, and i'd also recommend Trigun, Blue Seed, Tenchi Universe, and the Tenchi movies.
