Summary: Sometimes good but sometimes horribly flawed
Review: My memory of this series isn't all too good. I bought the whole series when it first came out, and by the middle of the series i was wondering if i could get a refund. The first 1/3 of the series was EXCELLENT. The storyline was unique and fascinating, the characters loveable and interesting, but I got to the middle of the series, and all this weird crap about virginity, losing virginity and sex done in such distasteful manner was very very displeasing. There was a particular episode i cringed through where miaka ends up being in her bra and panties half the time. ECH. All the angst and strange circumstances miaka and tamahome and hotohori put themselves into got more and more annoying, til i wanted to bash them all over the heads and scream. The story picks up again near the end, and I'd have to say the last episode was very good. The animations was not done very well, since so many of the scenes were still cells on stupid sparkly backgrounds. ALL, and i mean ALL of the fighting scenes consisted of still cells slowly scrolling in one direction. Talk about cheap animation. Anyways, what shines in FY is the unique storyline (the first half, anyways), the endearing side characters, and some cool character design. What really sucks is animation, music, some very stupid character/plot developments in the middle, tamahome and miaka.

Summary: Wonderful!!!
Review: When I first bought Fushigi Yugi, I was a little skeptical because of the reviews I had read. I got the impression that it was just a fun, airheaded series with no real plot, but boy was I surprised.
The story starts out with Miaka, your typical immature teenage heroine and her friend Yui being sucked into a book called the Universe of the Four Gods. I won't spoil the plot, but they are called to save the world of the book by becoming priestesses and collecting the seven stars. They have many adventures, and they actaully learn from them, unlike in some anime's.

I especially love the character development in this series. The characters change and grow through their adventures. You also get to learn about each character's past, even the bad guys, which really adds to the story, and explains a lot of the story, even parts that you wouldn't normally think about. It makes the story so much richer.

The mood changes through the series, which makes it easy to keep watching through all 52 episodes. It starts out light and funny, moves all the way to downright depressing, and comes back again. Once you've seen the first 26 episodes you get with this set, you really can't stop until you've seen the whole thing. This particular season does end on a cliffhanger, but it's not completely unbearable if you have to wait to raise money for the second set(like I did).

I should caution you, that some of the issues raised in the series are not for everyone. Rape is brought up in part of the series, and if that bothers you, you probably wouldn't enjoy that part. However, it doesn't dominate the plot, or subtract from it in any way, it's just a part of the story. So, unless you have a particular thing against it, it shouldn't be a problem.

All in all, this anime is one of the best I've seen, and I highly recommend it to anime fans.

Summary: MKR Meets Perfect Blue in Show That¿s Neither Here Nor There
Review: From the other reviews it seems clear that Fushigi Yugi is a popular series, but it may not be for everyone; it certainly wasn't for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the series for the first 10 episodes, after which it took a disastrous turn for the worse with the rape issue.

Fushigi Yugi starts of as a light hearted and highly entreating anime with great characters, entertaining situations and an interesting setting. Having a matter as series as a rape in the series completely changed the tone and for me took all the enjoyment out of the show. It was totally inappropriate for the feel of the programme and is about as fitting as having a rape in a series like Magic Knight Rayearth. Could you imagine Hikaru being raped in MKR, or maybe Hitome in Escaflowne? No, that would be totally unfitting for the respective shows and so was this.

In general the series was actually very good, but the issue of the rape ruined the show completely. Every time the victim of the rape appeared I was reminded of the incident and couldn't enjoy the programme.

I have seen it said that the rape scene makes the series more 'realistic' and that's probably true, but then the series isn't particularly realistic to begin with. Even before I went off the show I found the idea of strolling into the National Library after it had been closed up for the night rather absurd. For one person to break in is a triumph but for a second to appear inside with equal ease is a miracle. The series is littered with absurdities like this which are fine for light entertainment, but if they were trying to do something 'realistic' they've failed completely.

My entire review dwells on this one issue for the simple reason that is completely ruined the show for me. I watch anime to be entertained, not appalled or disgusted. Perhaps I'm a little over sensitive to this sort of thing but I was very surprised that a matter like this would crop up in the series. There are no warnings on the box about the content, few reviews (such as the editorial review above) mention it and the 13Up rating (which I believe is inappropriate) gives no indication of this sort of content. If this gets a 13Up rating then so should Perfect Blue. Just because the content isn't as graphic doesn't mean it's not equally or in this case more distressing.

Basically what I'm saying is this: if the idea of taking an innocent and pleasant high school girl and making her the victim of a rape sounds like the sort of this that would distress and appal you then this series is one to avoid like the plague. However, if you're not sensitive or easily disgusted then this series would probably be very enjoyable.

I made the terrible mistake of buying all four box sets at once and searching for the word rape in the reviews of the later box sets it looks like more of the same, so I'll definitely avoid watching them. Thank God for Amazon Marketplace so I can get some of the money back, though frankly I'd have paid not to watch this if I was fully aware of the content.

Summary: Fushigi Yugi
Review: I would have to say that this was an amazing DVD. It's very long, so you might want to take it in shifts, sort of. I finished the last disc and a half in one night, resulting in tears, and a tiresome day to come. v.v;;

Anyway, any true Fushigi Yugi fan would love this. It's truly amazing. Of course, its better to start of with the manga. There is a reason this might be better and the manga might be better. A flaw is that if you read the manga, you kinda develop a voice for each character in your head, and the actually seiyuu may very well disapoint you. And whether you are a sub or dub fan, sub is better on this. The english voices are very random, and none of them are very good for the characters. For example Chichiri's annoying girlish voice in English, and Hotohori's overly formal one. As well as Miaka's highly mature one. I think that the casting people jkust randomly picked people.

THis contains wepisode 1-26. It's trully amazing. But keep some tissues at hand. Even if you're not a very emotional person(like unemotional me), you'll probably cry. I know I did. It's very sad. People do die, and people are seperated, and many depressing things happen. So this is a show for those wh o can handle such things. I know personally, after finishing it, all of my artistic inspiration was sucked right out of me for a good week. But enjoy it! ^.^

Summary: Not a very "sophisticated" but I love it
Review: I must admit some parts of the story are very cheasy, but overall, the idea is very creative, sucked into the book, became a priestess, seven warriors and et cetera. I didn't like Miaka that much, but it doesn't affect my enjoying the series (probably I fast forwarded the parts I don't like .. =)) This is a very long series, and it is not easy to hold all the characters and plots nicely, I think they have done a pretty good job about it. If you are an anime fan, this is a must. Some people feel that this is a chick flicks ... After all, this is based on a chick manga.

Summary: Fushigi Yugi
Review: This is the best DVD I have ever watched!!
This is about a girl named Miaka and she and her best friend Yui get sucked into a book!!
Amazing!!!! Right?
There are some things that are different from the book though like Chichiri says "you know" instead of "no da" which I like a lot better.
Also, I think that Miaka's voice is too high and Tamahome's is too low.
I thought you pronounced Miaka's name like "my" and then "aka" with a long "a". They pronounce it like "Mi" like in "Mimi".
And then Tamahome's name I thought it was pronounced like just Tamahome like the home part is like "theres no place like home" but its home and then a mae.
Don't get me started on Nakago's voice. It's way too low!!!
Seriously, talking like that would just hurt my throt(did I spell that right?).
Also some other name pronouciations like Tasuki's they pronounce it like Taski like without the "u'".The guy who does Tasuki's voice is good. It makes him sound funny which he really is.
Same thing with Mitsukake's name they don't have the "u" sound in it.
Otherwise everyone else's names sound like I thought they would.
At first I thought Nuriko's voice was too low but then I got used to it.
(By the way Tamahome's voice gets better through the movie a little)
The movie stops about near the end of volume 7 in the book series.
I got really mad because I've already read all the way through volume 8 and I wanted to see what happened in volume 9.
Sigh, I guess I'll have to but the 2nd one then.
It goes from Episode #1 to Episode #27.

Summary: Fushigi Yugi Fan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Review: FUSHIGI YUGI is one of the best anime ever made!!! It's about a young girl who opened a book and was transported to the konan empire back in ancient china. The story begins when miaka was known as the priestess of suzaku. Suzaku is a God, and red bird like God, and it is able to grant any 3 wishes the priestess wants. but in order to sumon Suzaku, Miaka(the girl who got trap inside) must gather the 7 warriors of suzaku. As you see, Suzaku is the Guardian of the South in the 28 constellations. In each four points, north, east, west, and south have gods of their own points, and each gods have 7 constellations or warriors since they have been named. Each warriors have their own different powers and a symbol on their bodies to represent their constellations.

Summary: Fabulous anime; best of the two seasons
Review: It is unfortunate "Fushigi Yugi" went to two full seasons. The first season -- all represented in this 'Suzaku' volume -- was a triumph of imagination and story telling. There is hardly a wasted episode, and the character development is outstanding. This DVD set alone would be almost worth getting if you never watched the second season.

Of course, that's silly... you'll want to finish it. Only you may find the second season to be significantly inferior to the first. Don't let that dissuade you from buying this collection. You'll want to watch it for the imagery, for the music, for the drama. Several times. Share it with your friends. Show them anime isn't just for little kids.

FY represents the best of what anime is all about -- engaging story lines that make you feel. Characters who struggle, succeed, fail, and sometimes die. The heroic and the diabolical, and those in-between ones you are never quite sure about. The mundane and the mystic. Sure, it loses its way in the Seiryu volume. No matter. The magic is here, in the possibilities and potentials. You won't regret FY Volume 1.
