Summary: One has to wonder..
Review: Why this is such a well received anime?

Often seen as a "benchmark" in anime, it is nothing of the sort. The majority of the stories are highly simplistic, taking from the sci-fi genre in general (and japanese culture in particular) and the characters are ONE AND ALL single dimensional puppets. The only character in the entire series that was remotely human was Akagi Ritsuko.

It seems that everyone was characterized as having a single type of feeling, or a single state of mind. The lead character was driven almost entirely by a single event involving praise from his father.

Get real for a minute, people don't act like this, even larger than life anime characters. I was disappointed that these characters were presented as being deep (One episode is taken up by an insipid poem), while they were nothing of the sort.

The conflation of christianity with japanese culture also is a strike against this movie. Hideaki Anno decides to present a world of entirely Christian mythology, but without really bothering to care about Christianity. The last episode left fans of the series with a bad taste in their mouths, so Hideaki Anno decided to do another episode (End of Eva) specifically to anger his fans.

This is inexcusable. Making a film people don't like is one thing, but rubbing it in our face with something even worse when we disapprove is tantamount to professional suicide.

I keep this collection because it represents a clear picture of what anime really should not be. It presents every cliche. Every b-grade contrivance. Everything wrong with anime as cinema. From this, I can compare it to all other anime, and come to love my favourites even more.

Summary: so you'd like to enter into the world of anime?
Review: to start this off, Neon Genesis Evangelion is the most perfect and amazing display of anime i have ever seen. Leave those childish animes like trigun and yuyu haku. This is where the big kids play. The depth in which you are introduced to the characters is amazing. Some of them feel like your best friend. My advice is buy it! it is so worth it. This is not just some mecha show your kids like; this is for the whole family(above 11 or 12). If you want something enertaining yet makes you think this is definatly your anime. You will fall in love with the characters, their personalities actually differ(unlike other less sophisticated animes cough*trigun*cough*yuyuhaku*cough*dragonballz*cough. The producer does a great job exploring each character and even the evas start to developoe personalities near the end. all in all, it is an amazing series and you should either borrow it or buy it. trust me i watched it, i loved it and still do.

Summary: the best of the best
Review: In this review I'm not going to give out any in depth information about the series because that may ruin the awe and wonder at the thought provoking concepts brought up in it. However I will tell you that this is hands down my favorite anime series of all time. eva. is not your average action cartoon like dbz nor is it your every day mecha toon like gundam, neon genesis evangelion is a journy through the minds and souls of the characters involved like none you've ever dreamed of. some episodes of eva. left me wandering around my house and thinking about things that I had never before thought about for hours (no exageration).
I've really got nothing more to say about eva that wouldn't tarnish the experiance for you so I'll just say this, the perfect collection is highley priced but its worth every penny and I hope you buy it immediatly.

Summary: Anno's magnum opus
Review: In 1994, the industrial rock group Nine Inch Nails came out with their breakthrough album, The Downward Spiral . At first glance, it appears to be nothing more than a typical industrial rock album. Weird background noises, bizzare and confusing lyrics, and screaming, raging vocals. Upon closer analysis, however it is really a person's trip through death and rebirth. The ultimate trip through insanity perhaps. In fact, one can say that the album is really just a trip through the darker part of the human psyche, a person finding their darkest secrets and blackest fantasies...

Fast foward to the year 1996. After four years of a clinical depression, famed Japanese anime director Hideaki Anno came up with Shin Seiki Evangelion. Translating to "Neon Genesis Evangelion", Anno took every emotion and feeling he had for those painful four years and implanted them in his characters.

The abandoned and regretful Shinji Ikari, a fourteen year old boy. The also fourteen year old Rei Ayanami doesn't know her past and really doesn't want to. The over-acheiving and arrogant fourteen year old girl Asuka Langely Soryu covers her deep mental problems in being "the best" at everything. Gendo Ikari, Shinji's father, attempts to forget the fact that the one person he had ever loved passed on to a higher state of existence. Dr. Ritsuko Akagi, a woman hellbent on not becoming her mother, is becoming just that. Misato Katzuragi, a very successful leader, tries to bury herself in sex and achohol, deliberately "dirtying" herself.

As you can see, Shin Seiki Evangelion is all about the characters' very fragile psyche. Hopelessness, anguish, hollow joy, and vicious self-hate all affect Anno's characters, making them our darker halves. The side of us that doesn't come out often. The part of us that never comes out unless we are alone and helpless. The half of us where it hurts to think about it. Anno and Studio Gainax made this show appeal to us for doing that, making us see our own selves on screen, through their characters.

Another major influence in Shin Seiki Evangelion is religion. While using Christian and Jewish symbols, the series actually tells a story that is Buddhist. The Human Instrumentality Project, for example, is very Buddhist in nature. The Buddhist thoughts of individualism are displayed in this series, and anyone will admit to that. Christian and Jewish references are very apparant as well, but are used as symbols. Angels, Lillith, Adam, The Lance of Longinus, and the Dead Sea Scrolls are all used to tell the story, and it is easy to see that Anno and his crew wanted this religious influence to be shown to the audience.

Shin Seiki Evangelion has been and always will be my favorite anime series of all time. It's harrowing, shocking, and shows us the darker part of being human. We are all able to relate to the characters, and feel their plight. I love Evangelion, and always will to the day I die. It's one of the best animated series of all time. Enough said.

Summary: 6 stars- they gave me the movie as well
Review: This item was at a deal price, as I managed to get practically the whole series (the final two episodes were missing but this was okay). The version was Region 2, but I managed to find out a great deal both about Japanese (I learned the word gomen), and also about apocalyptic literature. In addition, they managed to supply me with the Eva movie which was an added bonus. Overall, I would say that this is not recommended for small children, but if you are into either religion or mechas, you might stand a high chance of enjoyment from this masterpiece.

Summary: Probably the second best anime ever.
Review: Evangelion is a great series, with lots of action. The only real problem with this series is that it is slightly to complicated. The characters really make you think, and they are all very deep. Make sure to get the End of Evangelion DVD to see the final ending.

Summary: Not Just About Mecha
Review: If, like me, you are someone who doesn't particularly enjoy anime series about giant robots, let me put your mind at ease - Neon Genesis Evangelion is not about the robots. (Using the term extremely loosely in this case). In fact, for anyone who has ever seen the trailer for the series, I joke that they must have culled mecha images from at least 5 episodes to create that trailer.

The story is FAR more about the characters and how the characters interact with what is going on, and with each other. The character development in this series is simply one of the most superbly done I have ever seen. There are whole sequences in the series whose sole purpose is to establish mood - and it is very well done. I won't reiterate what others have said about the plot or details though, as they have already done a great job.

But like they said - this is one series that you MUST see. It is simply one of the best ever made.

Summary: Best Series
Review: This is the best anime series you will ever see, maybe even if you aren't into anime in the first place. But just to say, the show is really about much more than christianity and God, and none of it is actually about mecha fighting, though it may include much. The real story in much more in depth and about Shinji's relationships with everyone around him, definately his dad. Due to the cultural differences here in America compared to Japan, it may be a bit hard to understand at first so watch it again if you need to. Then you can really appreciate the true story of EVA.

Summary: Better than trigun but more confusing
Review: This is a really good anime series. You have to pay attenetion. The animation is pretty good.
This series is not stricktly for mecha robot anime fans. This is for every anime fan. Check it out you will love it to death.

Summary: The Wonderful World of Eva
Review: I have watched all of the Neon Genesis Evangelion series and i have loved every moment of it. I anxiously await the coming of the new series and I am going to buy this and the two parts of the movie very soon. Unlike many other animes Eva is not a story of some little romance, it is dramatic and interesting. If you don't want to watch the whole series, then watch the movie Neon Genesis Evagelion: Death and Rebirth. The majority of Death is a synopsis of the series. It's all first-class.
