Summary: A bit too far out for this westerner
Review: I was expecting something out of the ordinary, and I ended up getting a bit more than I was bargining for..

The first thing that hits you with this movie is the outstanding animations, and really nice english dub (A minus for Billy Bob though, he sounds so bored that you kinda end up feeling sorry for the guy), you also get quickly drawn into the plot, and develop a certain amount of feelings for the main characters on both sides of the struggle.

Then it gets muddy..forest spirits and things that problably has a lot of bearing in japaneese mythology is the focalpoint of the storyline, and for a westerner like myself, it gets too strange and remote. I think I can grasp the basic meaning and theme of the film, the human greed and the animalgods are also accepted gratiously, but I cant grasp the mean of getting there..it gets too grandios, too weird..the ending is like David Lynch on acid -- It seems intelligent, but simply doesnt make sense for me..

The movie is however well worth watching, it is technically brilliant and emotionally engaging, if you dont mind weird supernatural elements I even recommend it, but if you want to see something with bearing in our own world you may want to try out a more down to earh anime like Perfect Blue.

Summary: Refreshing and stunning film experience
Review: THE FILM: Princess Mononoke is the masterwork of a master. This is the film you would throw at people who despise Japanese animation, and make them speechless. It is by far the best animated film I have seen-- with a sweeping, tender story, breathtaking picture/animation quality, and an excellent score. The English translation/dubbing job is wonderful.

Aside from the sheer skill of this work, this is a movie with a soul. It's one of those rare movies that take you on a journey and leave you in a different place emotionally from when you began. The moments of wonder, horror, and awe-- the woodpecker sound of a tree spirit, the growth of plants at the hooves of the forest god, the massacre of boars, the hands of death-- will remain in your mind for a long time.

I don't want to overhype, so just go see it and you'll understand!

(As for the violence and disturbing images of this film, none of it is tasteless. It's like violence in a war film; it has to be there. It is not for small children, but small children would probably not understand this movie anyway, so it's not really an issue (note the PG-13 rating!) Also, there are plenty of pretty images to compensate; my lasting impression was that it was a beautiful film.)

THE DVD: It's great that you can keep with you this fascinating film, but it has practically no special features. It is a shame that none of the "making of the film" features from the Japanese DVDs have made it onto the US release.

Summary: Amazingly put together!
Review: This anime is the best one I have ever seen. It is VERY well put together, things flow well, they dont have that run of the mill anime reactions or such, like if one made this into a MOVIE with actors, real places, etc, it could be done almost exactly. It is easy to follow the basic plot which makes this a favored item amongst children AND adults. The only problem with letting small children watch this is because there is death and killing involved, but the idea of death is a basic idea in the plot. Not "glorifying" death, but the idea of death plays a very key role in this movie. Even if one does not enjoy animes or "cartoons", this one goes beyond those simple terms and gives them a new meaning, I have had relatives who despise cartoon movies or animes watch this, and after they watch it, i had 19 out of 23 relatives say it turned out to be a very good movie, the others didnt like it simply because it was cartoonish, but they liked the plot. Again, young or old, this movie will please you again and again!

Summary: Sad, slow paced story about the blindness of anger
Review: The artwork was excellent.

Unfortunately, on the DVD that I purchased, the English voice tracks were recorded at a lower volume than the background music.

Some of the concepts (prostitution, blind hatred, mutilation, leprosy) presented in the movie are somewhat mature and probably not intended for young children. Besides that, the slow pace of the movie would bore young children.

I guess some potential viewers should be warned that the movie might be perceived as chronically suggesting that most humans intend to use technology to destroy nature. This suggestion may upset some viewers, because its argument is severely under developed. However, I doubt that the movie was intended as a political statement. When such a message is set against the story's background of blind hatred, malicious animals, and humans' need for survival, the under developed propaganda becomes ineffective and probably only has a polarizing effect.

PLOT SUMMARY:

I believe the real story is about coping with sadness. Initially, an outcast group of prostitutes and cripples created a town in the woods to mine iron, so that they may earn a living in an otherwise merciless world. A struggle between the boar clan and the outcast humans occurs. The boar clan, one of nature's animal tribes, becomes so overwhelmed with grief that they strike out in blind hatred towards all humans (even the ones who did not appear to do anything wrong). Their anger causes them to become both evil and unwise, which eventually gets them all killed. Meanwhile, some of the humans experience grief over the loss of their loved ones. Other wealthier humans see an opportunity to exploit the sad humans and quickly encourage the sad humans to hunt down the god of nature. This weakens the defenses of the sad humans fortress and potentially brings back the magical god's head too. In the end, the story vaguely hints that only hope and communication can overcome sadness, where as anger and hatred simply causes a person to become blind and possibly evil. Overall, the slow pace and audio problems made this movie disappointing.

Summary: Princess Mononoke - No, it's not another cheesy anime!
Review: This is a truly great movie! I first saw it when my Aunt and I went to Blockbuster. We saw it sitting on the shelf and thought it looked pretty good. We were wrong. It wasn't just "pretty good" it was awesome!... I mentioned it to one of my friends and found out that he loved the movie, too! I had to buy it and finally found it. I just don't understand why it is "why it is a little more money" here on Amazon.com . I got it for the price of a regular DVD. In fact, the store had 3 more copies all for the same price! Enough about price, though, let's talk about the movie. The movie has spectacular animation and a great plot. A prince is poisoned by a demon and is banished from his little town. He journeys and finds a town that produces iron and guns. A goddess/princess chick and these 3 cool talking wolves are trying to kill the "ruler" lady of the town because they destroyed the forest. In the end, I'm still not sure who really won: nature or the destructive humans. It's funny that Billy Bob Thornton was one of the characters (voice). This movie is great, a treasured part of any DVD collection. I reccomend it to anyone. The only people I know that didn't like it are my grandparents who are more into "classic" movies and those sort of older films. You won't regret seeing this movie! It's killer! Enjoy!

Summary: Beautifully made film
Review: This is an absolutely gorgeous film and it's easy to understand why it's so popular in Japan. But it's important to remember that it's _not_ a Disney film and therefore will not have a neatly resolved tidy ending. There are scenes that may make kids a bit squeamish, so be forewarned.

But it's a lovely film, well crafted and tells an amazing story. If you like animation, you definitely have to see this film. The story is compelling, the animation is great and the voice actors do a terrific job. Watch it for yourself and find out how good animation can be.
