Rating: Summary: The end of the saga... remastered Review: Like its predecessors in the "Robotech Remastered' series, the second "New Generation (Invid Invasion)" set features surprisingly high picture clarity and significantly improved sound quality. Also significantly improved is the story and plot, both of which were pretty wanting in the preceding `Southern Cross' show. Anyhoo, the picture upgrade is quite welcome, and is a half-step up from what I saw in the initial DVD release.
As for the sound quality: the new 5.1 channel stereo sound has been, and still is the greatest and most noticeable upgrade in the Robotech Remastered DVD series. Most of the sound effects have been totally redone, especially the various explosions and firing weapons. Sadly, just like the redone soundtracks in the previous Robotech Remastered releases, most of these sounds aren't too varied. Most of the explosions sound like rock slides and crumbling masonry. You know-- noises that Alpha/Legioss fighters and Invid shock trooper pods probably don't make when they're gettin' blasted to bits. Other sounds have been "boosted" for better auditory perception, especially background stuff I never picked up on before. But the best audio improvement of all is the voice track: they doctored it a bit so that it stands out reasonably well from the background sounds, thus making the dialogue more comprehensible.
As for new/extended "risqué" scenes that are the Robotech Remastered DVD series' main attraction: aside from a very brief (sorta) nudie moment and a few bloodier additions, ya ain't missin' much. `Course, if ya REALLY wanna know what you've been missin', I highly recommend you check out "Genesis Climber Mospeada" (available on DVD at www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000844K2/qid%3D1099974398/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/102-8646183-3962510 ), the original Japanese show the "New Generation" chapter of Robotech was fashioned from.
Other noticeable changes are the new opening & closing credits sequences, which now exclusively consist of opening/closing credits footage from the original "Mospeada" show. They even overhauled the mid-show "We'll be right back" eyecatch bumpers, which is something I don't recall them doing in the Robotech Remastered Macross & Southern Cross sets...
Finally, there are the special features, which consist of a cutesy transformable super-deformed Veritech Alpha/Legioss fighter toy... and that's it. Looks like you'll hafta hang on to those 'Elements of Robotechnology' bonus discs that came with the Legacy Collection box sets you bought a couple years back if you've a hankerin' for supplemental stuff...
