Description:

Marin Asagi is a 13-year-old orphan who lives in a Tokyo tenement with a clutch of offbeat, adopted relatives. When the planet Brigadoon appears in the sky, Marin is attacked by weird mecha called Monomakia. In an old shrine, she finds an ampoule that contains Melan, an angular blue mecha who swears to defend her. Why Marin is so important to Melan and the nasty aliens is never made clear. Nor do the film makers explain the presence of Makoto, an adolescent boy from the future, or the rubbery green creature that looks like a poorly designed Pokémon. The opening episodes of Brigadoon suggest a magical girl show, but without the magic. The only things that distinguish Marin are her poverty and her imagination--her fantasies of being executed have a dark humor reminiscent of Haunted Junction.
