Description:

Also known as Stellarbusters, this outré 1999 TV series tries to be a character comedy in the Tenchi Muyo! mode, but everyone tries too hard. Aoi, who's supposed to be 15 but looks and acts about 10, believes his mother is a glamorous supermodel who works in foreign countries. He discovers she's really an alien space pirate who resembles a cross between Sasami and Raggedy Ann. She's being pursued by the inept brother and sister team of Masatsuki and Mutsuki, who have been sent by Ranban to capture Mito's seal, which is the key to the most powerful weapon in the galaxy. Mito insists Aoi call her "Mom," but he understandably has trouble treating a character who looks younger than he does as his mother. There's lots of slapstick action in each episode, but it feels more effortful than funny. (Rated 17 and older: violence, profanity, nudity) --Charles Solomon
