This 2001 series represents the latest installment in Leiji Matsumoto's long-running and popular saga of Captain Phantom F. Harlock of the Deathshadow. The new episodes focus not on the dashing space pirate, but on Warrius Zero, a mercenary who is confused and embittered by the loss of his family in the war between Earth and the robot race of Mechanized Men. Aided by a cast of typical Matsumoto characters, Zero sets out to hunt down Harlock. Much of his time and attention is spent trying to defuse the tensions between the humans and Mechanized Men who make up his crew, but his concern for them doesn't prevent him from putting his life and his ship, the Karyu, in danger. Matsumoto has been revising and expanding this continuity for nearly 25 years; Captain Zero is one of his less memorable additions. Rated 13 Up: violence, brief nudity, alcohol use. --Charles Solomon
