Rating: Summary: Bad game....Great anime.... Review: Now for those of you who played the dismall PS2 game titled "Orphen," I want you to forget that period in your life.... Now that you have done that...sit down and get your hands on this anime. It combines a well organized plot with the commical antics of those involved in the story. The plot in itself is amazing, purely because it takes until the last episode to have every piece in place. Most movies leave you with a few pieces missing or too quickly bring them all into focus. This story spawns over many years with flash backs that lead the viewer a bit closer into the world that is being displayed. This anime's plot is worth five stars in itself actually and is far more evolved then most animes on the market these days. Orphen also uses top notch animation. The characters are well draw and look more realistic then most on the market today. The spell casting and action sequences are gripping. The humor animation really adds to the jokes as well. The music track has a few decent scores, but overall is quite average. The voice overs are really really really good. I can't say it enough, they are great. I really can't say it enough, I love the voice actors for this series. If they do a sequal series, they had better have the same voice actors. The lighter comedy aspects of this story are wonderful as well. They are well placed and don't detract from serious scenes. Some of it is so funny because of the randomness. If you love comedy I suggest this series strongly. So overall this series is what real animation is about. Funny, serious, story to die for, great animation and great voice overs. A truely excellent series that I hope has a sequal.

Rating: Summary: Not too Shabby! Review: Orphen-Spell of the Dragon is the beginning of a story about a spellcaster called Orphen. The story starts out with Orphen and his apprentice Majic at Majic's father's pub yakking and Majic being as good as Orphen someday, while his father is still a bit skeptical about it all. Orphen drops his drink and then uses a spell that makes it seem as if he is reversing time, because the glass comes back together the exact same way it shattered. Later, it shows Orphen and Majic in a desert like place and Orphen boasting about his ability and then Majic marveling when Orphen blasts a bottle, yet it comes back to them and Majic starts making stupid cracks about Orphen being so "good". Well, later we find the duo "birdwatching". Orphen is up in a tree with Majic's binoculars looking around. A girl in the mansion nearby named Cleao is starting to undress when she sees light reflecting on the binouculars. She runs downstairs, grabs a very large sword and runs out to confront Orphen for allegedly "peeping". Then somehow (I forgot exactly) the conversation turns to somehow turns to "The Bloody August". Then some huge green dragon appears with ghosts around it. Orphen grabs Cleao's sword (just so the noobs know, it is called the Sword of Baltanders) and starts waving it around calling the dragon calling it Azilie, and so on and so forth. I won't go into much detail, because I don't really want to spoil it. This is a great anime for any anime lover. Though it might be a little up there for noobs, any anime veteran will quickly catch on. This is one of the first anime that has all of these supernatural powers that I could comprehend on the 1st episode! animation-I really can't say how beautiful this is. Of course, almost every anime has top notch animation. dub-I am going to get a small group of anime fans, buy a huge stack of poster board, 1,000 boxes of matches, 1,000 cans of gasoline (or propane), markers, wood sticks, and tape, and we are going to march around all of the companies in the U.S. that dub anime and BURN THEM TO THE GROUND!! The supplies will be signs saying: "FOR THE LOVE OF ALL ANIME, STOP THE BAD DUBS!!!!!!!" This dub was awful. What, there might have been, 3 parts that were good? music-pretty good! I think the opening song is better than the ending. I always seem to like the opening song better than the ending. voice acting-Orphen's voice was great! I thought Majic's voice sounded a bit young. Mariabelle's and Cleao's voice were definitely way too young. overall rating-4 out of 5. Dub cost it the five. Sheesh, how hard is it to make a good dub, for crying out loud. Nonetheless, this is a GREAT anime.
Rating: Summary: Orphen? What the heck is that? Review: This DVD was a total impulse buy, and looking back, I'm very glad I was so eager to spend my money on that day. First off, I am not a fan of fantasy. Having said that, I'm not quite sure what drew me to this title, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. One of my favorite things about this anime is Orphen himself - he does not look like your typical main character. With his leather jacket, black pants, and red headband, he looks like a bad guy, but looks are decieving. Orphen is a very interesting character with a mysterious past, and by the end of the first episode, the viewer knows that there's a lot more to this story than they've been shown so far. These first three episodes are like a trilogy; they all run into each other to make one long story designed to introduce us to the anime, and it does this well. We are introduced to Orphen's student Majik and a girl named Cleo who has a crush on Orphen, but would never admit it. We also meet the troll Volcan and his sister, Dortan. Volcan's anti-Orphen attitude is quite amusing, though he can become quite annoying at times. This show has well-placed comedy and a very good story; one that left me excited and interested in what the next volume held in store. Needless to say, I threw the second disc in my DVD player as soon as the third episode finished. What amazes me most is that this show could have such a strong hold on me when I'm not particularly into fantasy. I definitely recommend this show - it doesn't get enough recognition.
Rating: Summary: Stick with the Japanese track Review: This is a very good show and anyone who played the somewhat-related PS2 game will notice that the characters are just about the same. In any case, the show is still much better than the game. The visuals look very nice and a lot of the spells cast have a look to them that works nicely. Audio is good overall, and some of the extras are great--like the creditless opening and ending. But this show needs to be watched in Japanese with the subtitles on as ADV butchered the dub and changed the whole feeling of the show. This is very easily seen if watched in English with the subtitles on. The English track seems to be angrier for some reason. Otherwise, this is a fun way to kill a couple hours. The way the viewer is dropped into the middle of the storyline will keep you guessing for a while.
Rating: Summary: Orphen, the saga begins..............AND IT'S GREAT! Review: WARNING! THERE ARE A FEW MINOR SPOILERS HERE!..............................................................Orphen starts off with the episode called "The Sword of Baltanders" in this episode we see the characters of Orphen begin to flesh out. We are introduced to Orphen a spell caster, Magic who is orhens apprectice, and Cleo, though she tries not to admit it has the hots for Orphen, and a two "TROLLS". I am not sure if they actually are trolls they look human enought to me but oh well. Orphen and Magic end up going against 'The Bloody August' a dragon which Orphen seems to have ties to. Eventually the two Trolls end up running off woth the sword of Baltanders and Orphen, Cleo, and magic head after them.
Rating: Summary: An Example of Anime At Its Best! Review: When I first checked out this DVD I was really skeptical. My first impression was that the main character 'Orphen' was a walking hybrid of Squall from Final Fantasy 8 and Ryu from Street Fighter, but I was in for a pleasant surprise. If you have ever seen (and liked) the Escaflowne television series and/or enjoyed X the movie then I have no doubt that you will enjoy this series. Orphen is a character that brings a different twist to 'the hero saves the day' concept that so many Japanese Animations float around. He's lazy and seemingly egocentric at times, but unequal when it comes to magic. This DVD also includes all the must haves in a good movie including action, suspense, great music and a little romance with some comic relief. Enjoyable with solid characters and a story line that keeps you guessing, Orphen is every Japanese Animation fan's must have collection. Anyone who has ever played the game that this series is based on (Orphen: Scion of Sorcery) and enjoyed it (even just the characters alone) should not hesitate to get this DVD. Now only if they made Final Fantasy 8 into a series like this...
Rating: Summary: Dungeons and Dragons¿ADV Style Review: When I was at the video store I saw this DVD on the rack and it just jumped out at me. I picked it up and I instantly wanted it, flipping it over and reading the back made me want it more!! When I turned it on, I was introduced to a whole new world of anime. Orphen-Spell of the Dragon is the first volume in a great series. The music is amazing, I found myself turning up the volume and just getting into it. Then the show started...I was hooked from scene one. The voices are great. This show has everything, action, comedy, hot girls, and really cool bad guys. This DVD has alot of extras too, textless opening and ending, art, and more. This DVD is defiantly a compliment to any anime collection!!
Rating: Summary: Nice but far to short. Review: While Orphen, Spell of the Dragon, tells an interesting story and is well animated my overall impression was kind of disappointing. The DVD contains only 3 episodes, each of about 20 minutes, the rest is opening, end-titling and even the stop/start shots where on TV the commercials are inserted. After the 3 episodes were done they left me with the impression of having seen about 1 episode of a longer anime. So what it inspired in me was a sense of having wasted money, rather than of having seen a nice anime. My advice, don't buy it unless you are an absolute Orphen fan.
