Description:
Makuamuuge, the villain in a video game, dispatches Seppukumaru and some nasty little assistants to try to take over the Earth. Fortunately, Goemon, the hero of the game, emerges from the TV set of nerdy adolescent Tsubasa at the same time. The episodes quickly fall into a pattern: Seppukumaru and his agents terrorize some human target and gather enough negative emotional energy to unleash a lumpy, improbable monster. (Zanpan grows huge eating school cafeteria lunches.) Goemon, who looks like a miniature version of the Bodhidharma, eats his girlfriend's ohagi (sweet rice cakes) the way Popeye eats spinach: fueled by them, he defeats Seppukumaru's creatures with a little help from his friends and robots. Originally entitled Ganbare Goemon (Go for It, Goemon!), this 1997 series is silly, formulaic, and harmless. (Rated 13 and older, but suitable for viewers three to four years younger: minor risqué/gross humor, cartoon violence, alcohol use) --Charles Solomon
