Eleven-year-old Al Izuruha finds himself caught up in the escalating power struggle between the Earth Federal Forces and the space-based Duchy of Zeon. Mecha pilot Bernie Wiseman involves him in a Zeon plot to capture or destroy an experimental Gundam suit stored in his home colony. Al is torn between his new friendship with Bernie and his long-standing friendship with Federal Gundam pilot Christina MacKenzie. There's plenty of action and mecha battles in War in the Pocket, but the six-part OAV stresses the suffering war produces, rather than its glories. The final image has a power the more heroic Gundam adventures lack. Although it was released in 1989, War in the Pocket, follows The 08th MS Team (1996) in the main Gundam continuity.
