The first season of this outré mecha series concludes as the scattered storyline begins to gather some momentum. The title character, the "god" of the island of Barou, becomes of the object of unscrupulous politicians' plots. When the Shimabara Sisters (Minami, Yuuhi, and Ushio) and their friends foil these schemes, the American Army assumes the role of villain, inserting a clause into the Japanese defense pact that prohibits the presence of the gigantic Neo-Ranga. Under the telepathic control of Ushio, Neo-Ranga proves quite capable of defeating anything the U.S. military throws at him. In one bizarre subplot, another "ancient god" is awakened, a half-melted looking humanoid that Neo-Ranga dispatches before anyone can ascertain just what it is. Perhaps the film makers will succeed in tying the disparate story elements together in the second season.
