Summary: The Best Anime Ever. Period.
Review: I saw Akira in the theater when I was twelve, and I've loved it ever since. This edition has numerous features, too many to go into, I'll just say they provide interesting information, and that Akira justifies having these features provided. It's that great a film. The animation is fantastically detailed, both realistic and imaginative. Flying, driving motorcycles, and mutating into a superblob are all depicted beautifully. This is like no other movie, ever. You've never seen anything like this before. Tetsuo Shima's horrific journey from street punk to demi-god is treated seriously - it seems just as unreal and scary to him as it does to us watching. The story is crammed into two hours, but it is an excellent adaptation of the manga. Everyone should see this movie once. Those who love it will enjoy watching it over and over again.

Summary: If it's available...BUY IT. Don't think twice.
Review: If you've never seen any anime before, and you're wondering where to start, start right here. You need this film, ESPECIALLY ON DVD. It is one of the most important anime ever created, if not only for the advancements in animation, then for the advancements in storytelling through the animated format and sheer, graphic realism. That's one of the major differences between live action and animation...you can do things with animation that you can't do with real actors. You also don't have to worry about safety issues and property damage.

And by the way...this film is not intended for small children. If you want to watch it WITH them and (try to) explain things, feel free.

Summary: Akira
Review: I think Akira is one of the greatest anime ever. It was a magor breakthrough in Japanese anime. Every anime fan should own this. I highly recomend the special edition DVD, it is packed with extra features including capsule mode(which is very cool). Akira is set in the future in Neo Tokyo. Its very bloody but has a great story line to back it up. If you don't have this go get it now!

Summary: So...I don't see what the fuss is about
Review: I consider myself a big fan of anime, but...I must say I didn't like this DVD very much. I really liked Princess Mononokee and the such but this one was just hard to follow. Ok so a kid has super telekenetic powers and can blow junk up and i know he loses control of his powers but...whats the point of the severe case of elephantitis?(or hemerhoids if thats how u spell it)I really liked the fight scenes tho and thats why I gave it a 3.

Summary: The benchmark...
Review: The single greatest anime movie ever. The single greatest anime DVD ever. Thank you Pioneer. This deluxe two disk set does everything right. The re-mastered video is the best Akira print ever. The 5.1 English audio is great, and the new dub/sub is good. The extras including director's interview, production report, soundtrack making-of, restoration, trailers, and production materials are great. My only gripes are no commentary, and the glossary is pointless. 6 stars. Superb.

Summary: No matter how good you have heard this is, it's better!
Review: In the year 1989, a new type of Atomic bomb was dropped on Tokyo, Japan. In the confusion that followed nobody determined who had dropped the bomb by WW3 had begun. The world fell and then re-grew. It is now 2031, the countries of the world have returned to power and the area where the bomb dropped is just outside the metropolis, Neo-Tokyo. The citizens of the city are in complete hatred from the government is ramped and anarchy rules the streets. It's in this atmosphere that the AKIRA project came to light.

Akira is the greatest and best selling anime epic ever to be released from Japan. Winning international awards and the first anime ever to grace to west of the world and started a flood of more as anime's popularity grew. Akira base on the best selling set of graphic novels is not that good an adaptation but as a stand alone anime deserves high praise.

Akira is the one anime to base all anime's on and it's now your chance to own the greatest anime to be made in your lifetime, you won't be disappointed.

Summary: The Ultimate Review from film & game critic Marc Antomattei
Review: (...)

I quote "In 1988, the landmark Anime film, by director Katsuhiro Otomo, defined the cutting edge of Anime around the world. By today's standards, AKIRA remains a landmark achievement in cel animation and retains the explosive impact of its highly detailed animation and its intensely violent saga of power and corruption. Pioneer Entertainment proudly presents this classic film, completely restored and digitally re-mastered".
Back Cover of DVD
I highly agree. Still probably the best looking Anime today. Mamoru Oshii and Manga Entertainment claim that their work of Ghost in the Shell exceeds the production values of AKIRA which is just about untrue in every possible way. Let it be known that AKIRA defines Japanamation. This is for young and old adult audiences alike, whether your looking forward to seeing some Japanamation for the first time or your a long-time fan looking for that one spectatular Anime to complete your library of the genre. This is it people, be happy and rejoice. This is definitely a purchase, I recommend buying it. And make sure you get the 2-disc Special Edition and not the regular edition. Also I recommend Metropolis an anime that is supposedly going to really push the boundaries over this one, it's written by Katsuhiro Otomo creator and lead artist of AKIRA.

Summary: Entertaining Movie, Fastpaced Etc... Hard-to-follow Plot
Review: Let me say first that this was the movie that got me into anime to begin with. Now, after seeing many others, I can make a healthy review. It is a very well made movie with a good storyline and characters, but the following is my only complaint, and the only reason it didn't get 5 stars.

Unless you've read the graphic novels first, this movie is moderately hard to completely understand. Of course you get the jist of it, and you'll enjoy the characters and be rooting for some, booing for others throughout the movie, but certain plots and motives by certain individuals and organizations throughout the movie are hard to understand. However, half of this problem can be solved by watching the DVD in the Japanese language with english subtitles. This helps you understand it better, especially through your second viewing.

Summary: Excellent
Review: Akira is awesome. The special edition features top-notch sound and picture quality. The animation is ridiculously good and the story is rich and captivating. However, all this anime goodness doesn't come in expensive. At [a high price] (2/2002)the special edition of Akira will blow your mind and your budget.

Summary: A Moral Tale
Review: Originally a comic book strip, Akira was transferred to the big screen and the results are frightening but beautiful. It tells the tale of addiction of the Sticky Rice and the consequences of eating too much of it. You either end up like Tetsuo, deforming yourself into a big disgusting Sticky Rice or end up like those three little kids and get the crap beaten out of you all the time.

A tale of for the ages and should be shown to all hawker food owners and yum cha restaurateurs.
