The Europeans, led by Sam Torrance, had lost the Ryder Cup at Brookline in Boston in 1999 amid controversy: the Americans celebrated a clutch shot by running onto the green before the title was decided. The 2002 tournament, delayed a year following the September 11 terrorist attacks, fostered a friendlier spirit, as witness a hands-across-the-table lunch for the "Ryder Cup wives."
