Description:

In Akira Kurosawa's 1961 classic Yojimbo, a shrewd ronin comes to a flyspeck village and exploits the divisions between the local gangs; Hayato Date's anime series moves the story into the late 20th century. Tough guy George Kodama arrives at the two-bit mining town of Kimujuku in search of a man linked to a mysterious railroad accident 15 years earlier. Soon the town big shots are clamoring for his services. A police officer takes him under his wing; the daughter of a politician falls for him; the thugs he beats up worship him. The plot advances in fits and starts, which would be forgivable if George had the irreverent charm of Spike Spiegel or the concealed strength of Kenshin Himura. But he's so cool and understated, he's neither interesting nor appealing. The transfer to disc is sloppy, with numerous visual artifacts. (Rated 16 and older: violence, profanity, alcohol and tobacco use) --Charles Solomon
