Summary: Not funny "ha-ha"
Review: ...because if you laugh out loud at this, you'll miss about 10 gags.

First off, I gotta say I love most of Excel Saga. That show cracks me up. But while I see how this would be the sequel, I do believe I got through this entire DVD without laughing. None of the jokes exactly instigated hysterics for me, although they were definitely funny - and after I stopped watching, when I thought everything over, I did laugh quite a bit. But the fact that I was able to not laugh at anything while it was happening probably does say something about the quality of the humor on this DVD, although I think it's an interesting piece anyway, and definitely something I'll keep in my collection.

The animation is very smooth and pretty, and seems like it has a higher budget than Excel Saga did; I guess because it's an OVA. (Speaking of, each episode on here was like $50 in Japan when it came out, so I wouldn't complain about paying $30 for both if I were you.) I think it's really commendable that so much effort was put into this goofy little thing that serves no purpose other than to be wacky and mock stuff. In my opinion, that makes it a little more mature.

It is possible to offend me, I suppose -- or at least for me to see that something would be offensive to most others, and I'm sorry to say this DVD failed to draw anything like that into my radar. Am I supposed to have something against lesbianism? Oh goodness, two naked girls rolling around on top of each other. How... awful? Sorry, not gettin' it. I thought the boob gags were pretty good. Parts of this DVD do border on, how you say, "pornography", but *mild* pornography, not anything explicit. They even censor out parts of the drawings! So no one who wasn't offended by Excel Saga will be offended by this. I think Hellsing is a lot dirtier, which may just be because it takes itself more seriously.

I also don't think this DVD really "broke the weirdness barrier", because when it was over, I wasn't confused at all. In fact, I felt like it was something I could have written. It's nothing like FLCL (which only the more obsessed fans claim "makes perfect sense"), where I don't get a single thing going on at points. I never felt lost in this lack of storyline, I was just able to immediately accept that there wasn't one. Big deal? Eh.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get through the English dub of this for more than five minutes. I have nothing against dubs, but I really can't understand a lot of what the actors are saying in here because it is, as everyone else has said, so fast. I suppose I'm much better at reading than I am at hearing, because I had no troubles with the subtitles, even when they were shooting by. So, it's just about preference, I guess. Wish I could review the dub, though.

On one more completely unrelated note: a lot of the score in here was lifted directly from Excel Saga, but there are two whole new theme songs that I enjoyed immensely. I can't wait to pick up the soundtrack for this!

So, all in all, this wouldn't be in my top 10, but I liked it a lot. Check it out if you've got nothing else to buy.

Summary: Good or just plain silly?
Review: At first when I saw this I thought it was going to be boring but I was wrong. Once I watched it awhile and took in the characters I was laughing really hard. Its just one of those anime's that you dont understand but really dont care. In my opinion its alot better than Excel Saga cause it has alittle more silliness to it. So whether a newbie or a hardcore fan, Its your choice on this show or take the time to ask yourself, Is it worth the price to see something this silly? I rest my case

Summary: What Went Wrong?
Review: Excel Saga (by the same director/writers/animation crew and voice team) is a work of brilliant satire and self mockery. All 6 DVD's of Excel Saga received 5 star ratings from me.

Extras in the later Excel Saga DVD's include previews and "making of" specials of Puni Puni Poemi, and talk about how excited everyone is about this new leap, this new adventure.

Which just leaves me wondering "What Went Wrong?". This poor excuse for an anime seems low budget and unscripted and is grating, uninspired, unfunny and all round irritating. For the Excel Fans out there, try and picture "Going Way Too Far" (the last excel Episode) without the established characters or funny bits.

The witty dialog, in-jokes, pop-culture references, inter-cultural sillinesses, genre hopping madness and personal foibles of Excel Saga have been replaced by having the lead characters voice played continuously at double speed, one running gag (The lead character keeps referring to herself by the voice actresses name. So very very funny. Not.) and painful quantities of giant boobs, mock fan service, mock pre-teen lesbianism and "joke" hentai.

And just in case that pre-teen-lesbianism (...) (thankfully not at the same time) sounds good to anyone, trust me, it's not. It's all done in a poor and doomed attempt to recreate the zaniness and otaku mocking of Excel Saga, leaving it with all the sex appeal of a sea urchin.

Speaking of the Otaku Mocking, whereas in Excel Saga the director (Shinchi Watanabe, he of the afro) casually joked with the viewers and their foibles from time to time, in Puni Puni Poemi you will get the impression that he got one too many letters requesting nude pictures of Hyatt, and decided that we needed to be punished.

Watanabe-san, for the sake of Excel Saga I will try to forget you ever sullied your name and reputation with Puni Puni Poemi.

Summary: Breaking the Weirdness Barrier
Review: For those avid fans of excel saga, this is the anime for you! Puni Puni is all based on a gag found in episode 17 (i think) of excel saga, a short parody of magical girl shows common in japan, especially amongst young girls. But make no mistake, this is NOT for children (its strongly suggests age 17+), for it is about the closest thing you can get to an actual hentai program. It is very like Excel Saga in that it stars a super hyper chick with a modest dream that never really comes true, and along the way (the whole 2 episodes) encounters wacky incidents. However, unlike Excel Saga, you do not need a thorough understanding of japanese culture. Just a sense of humor, thats all. You might even notice some familiar characters, especially Nabeshin, the director's alter ego, and his wife Kumi-Kumi (soup girl, remember?). Plus, you might be able to catch Koshi Rikdo and Menchi. And one character, Shii, bares a strong resemblence to Hyatt (blue hair, soft-speaker, well endowned). And for those who enjoy listenin to the dubbed version (if you're goin sub, i'd be best if you're a fast reader!) its fun to identify the voices of your favorite Excel characters!

Well you could have skipped all that, because i'll just sum it up here: If you enjoy the antics of Excel Saga (or fan service *blush*) these two episodes are definately worth your money! But be prepared for obscene jokes, uncomfortable situations (like the aliens and their... packages hangin down the whole show...), and questionable physical comedy. I thoroughly enjoyed this program, and i would buy anything else they dish out!

Summary: An Anime for the Boys
Review: I had just finished watching "Puni Puni Poemy" and I was definitely suprised at some of the things that they did. I loved the "Excel Saga" series and I thought that this two episode OAV would be just as fun, but it ended up to be another sex anime for boys. Although some parts I really did enjoy, but it was too much sex oriented. I am not saying that this would be a complete waste of time. Just that it is a fan service for the boys.

Summary: Somewhere in the middle of outrageous and hillarious 4.5
Review: I purchased this title for the simple fact that it got an excellent review in Newtype magazine, and also after viewing the ADV trailer. Being a major fan of comedy anime I thought I'd give it a try once I saw it at the store. I must say that it wasn't what I expected, I had never come across an anime like this(I'm a just-converted anime fan), but it was pretty damn good. Great money spent on a good title--plus I got a free patch yay!! It was definetly funnier the second time around; the first time I viewed it it was zooming by so fast it was hard to keep up, you have to pay close attention as Poemi aka Kobayashi talks really fast. The only thing that I found irritating was the cheesy opening, I mean come on guys! You have to see it to believe it. Overall there was a small piece of everything in this title: from sailor moon to mecha mockery, and a talking dead fish! It IS entertainig and I recomend it to all fans who enjoy comedy anime!

I must say that it wasn't what I expected, being a major fan of comedy anime I thought I'd give it a try once I saw it at the store. I was a little dissapointed, perhaps because I enjoy witty humor rather than parodies--frankly I found the cheesy opening irritating. I will say that it is a bit too hyped; with an A- review and a 17+ rating you would expect more. However, it was definetly funny the second time around, the first time I viewed it it was zooming by so fast it was hard to keep up, you have to pay close attention as Poemi talks really fast. Overall there was a small piece of everything in this title, it is entertaining, I recomend it if you're a fan of this type of anime otherwise you might or might not like it.

Summary: They learned nothing from Excel.
Review: Puni Puni Poemi is one of the most insane things I have ever seen in my entire life. It's also one of the funniest. Whereas a lot of Excel Saga's humour came from bizarre puns and obscure cultural references that didn't carry over too well into English, Poemi is focused mostly on sight gags, and the occasional one-liner that would be impossible to mess up. And, since the DVD will be a release from the fine folks at ADV, you can count on a pretty good dub - although the Japanese version is much funnier, if only for the hysterics of Poemi's seiyuu, Yumika Kobayashi.

There's no plot, no character development and no real point to Poemi, and the only people who can say that it suffers because of this shouldn't be watching anime anyway. Poemi has no pretentions; it's not art or a great story. It's bizarre fun at its best. But keep it away from anyone under seventeen. They'll lock you up otherwise.
