Comic Party pokes good-natured fun at doujinshi (fan comics) in the behind-the-scenes way Animation Runner Kuromi spoofs anime. Quiet, well-intentioned high school senior Kazuki gets euchred into creating a comic by his friend Taishi, who envisions a worldwide empire of doujinshi--with himself as emperor. Kazuki pays a price for this new interest: the time he spends on his comic infuriates his girlfriend Mizuki, and the fan conventions expose him to all sorts of weirdoes, from feuding artists to the Japanese equivalent of the Comic Book Guy. The series includes numerous references to well-known manga and anime: the translator's notes explain many of them, but American otoku (fans) will recognize the images. Comic Party may be a great big inside joke, but it's a very funny one. Extras include a short additional episode and interviews with the Japanese voice actors.
