Summary: I have been introduced to Ranma by the first two eps.
Review: This is a great introduction to Ranma 1/2 and later on the TV series. This show is so cute and harmless I could watch it with my six year old and seven year old brothers because there is no sex no graphic violence just romance humor that goes over children's heads. Besides kids have seen more graphic scenes in theatres than this.

Summary: Great DVD set, but NOT necessarily "suitable for all ages"
Review: This is an excellent DVD set. The picture is clear, the sound is good, and the special features are pretty nice. If I were in charge of VIZ production, I can only think of three minor changes that I'd make: (1) I'd put the character introductions on the first disc (they are on the third one) so that people new to the series would be more likely to see them before watching; (2) I'd be careful with the location of subtitles (sometimes they overlap the translations of the signs that Genma holds up); and (3) I'd break each episode up into more chapters. (Each episode is four chapters, but one is the opening theme and one is the ending theme. Really there are only two chapters for each episode -- the first half and the second half. It would be nice, and easier to find interesting parts without watching all the way through, if chapters were broken on major scene boundaries.)

DVD is the best way to watch Ranma, since it comes with both English and Japanese soundtracks (and optional subtitles). In order to get the equivalent material on video, you'd have to buy a dozen OAV tapes (six dubbed into English and six subtitled) at a cost of well over $200. I hope that VIZ plans to release the TV seasons of Ranma in similar DVD sets in the future. I know I'd buy them.

A previous reviewer recommended the set "for all ages." The box set comes with a "13 Up" sticker, indicating that it is recommended for ages 13 and up. I agree with that sticker; the material is not necessarily appropriate for all ages. There are a fair number of bare breasts, and there's one particular episode where Ranma ends up grabbing a female character's (clothed) breast several times. It's not done in bad taste, but it's not necessarily the sort of thing that you'd want your six-year-old daughter to be watching. It may be fine in any given household, but the parents should be aware of the contents before buying.

The first Ranma theatrical movie (Big Trouble In Nekonron, China) IS suitable for all ages, and is also available on an excellent DVD. (It's a good thing, too, because that movie is advertised on VIZ's Pokemon DVDs, and those are intended for a much younger audience.) Some of the individual OAV episodes are also suitable for all ages, but concerned parents will want to screen them first. Perhaps a fourth thing that I might do if I were in charge of VIZ's USA releases, is to make DVDs that can play two different versions of the episodes (original and "sanitized"). Then younger audiences could get to appreciate more of the Ranma collection.

Summary: Ranma 1/2, the funniest (clean) anime ever!
Review: This series is pretty clean, there are about 5 moments on partial nudity in it, but they only last about half a second. There are no scenes with adult themes. There is no better movie series in Anime that is this funny. My favorite part of this DVD is the Music Vidoes that are included. Thanks! Yeah for Kuno!

Summary: Great dvd set for any anime collection..
Review: Well, since Ranma is an older series and most likely anyone buying the dvd set will probably know the general plot to Ranma, I won't go into a synopsis on the OAV series in this set. I'll comment instead on the presentation. First off, the box is encased in a plastic see-thru slip cover ala Fushigi Yuugi. It even opens up ala Fushigi Yuugi. There are pictues of Ranma, Genma, Shampoo, Moose, and Ranma's mom?(Or Akane's) in the inside covers. The disc hub is unfortunately that ungiving, unmoving hard hub that feels like you can split a disc while removing them. Be careful with the discs while doing so. Also, included in a side pocket to the sleeve is a sheet detailing the episodes in order along with a general synopsis of the story. Picture quality in this set is great. Crystal clear although I did find one minor picture glitch in my first disc. Subtitles are done in yellow with black background which is a bit harsh on the eyes. The subtitles also seem to shimmer a bit. I find it's a little bit annoying, but liveable. Still, despite some minor quips, the set is worth its price if you're a Ranma fan.
