Summary: Tenchi Muyo: Classic Anime Comedy
Review: Alright, this is obviously the box set for the Tenchi Muyo OVA series. The set includes all 13 episodes, and an additional disc with the Tenchi Encyclopedia (v3.0; powered by Washu OS) which contains just about anything you would need or want to know about the Tenchi experience.The series itself contains minor nudity, seen only in the hotspring/bath and in Dr. Clay's ship, some sake drinking, and profanity popping in here and there. The series as a whole is good for anyone, but some jokes and scenes are more honed to the more mature audiences. The characters are Tenchi, the lovable high school boy with amazing powers, Ryoko the former space pirate sealed in the Masaki Shrine, Ayeka the Juraian crown princess, Sasami her sister, Mihoshi the ditzy Galaxy Police Officer, and Washu, the genius scientist sealed in a 11 year old girl's body. The first disc follows the first OVA series, and shows the introduction of Tenchi and all of his female companions. The trouble starts in episode 5, where you see Kagato, the vengeful scientist bent on assimilating with Tsunami, the Jurai royal family's most powerful ship. Kagato is quite possibly one of the greatest anime villains out there, and his performance is is quite satisfying. The disc ends on a funny note, with the Ryo-Ohki special, filled with all of that classice Tenchi comedy we've come to know and love. Disc 2 continues into the second OVA series, where we see many secrets revealed about our characters. You may find some interesting facts about Washu, Sasami, Tsunami, Ryoko, Yosho and Tenchi on this disc. The villain in this series is the "Octopus head" Dr. Clay. He is sent by a celestial being known a D3 to capture Washu and bring her to the mysterious Lady Tokimi. This disc ends with a visit from Jurai's royal family to the Masaki household. This box set is a great buy for anyone interested in a good laugh and a good, solid story. The series is driven and built around the characters' interactions, not strictly held to combat and sensless violence. A charming series, and a great price for what you will possibly be getting.

Review: I first got hooked on Tenchi Muyo! via Cartoon Network. The story to the OVA is incredible and wonderful. A word of warning though: this box set does not contain an ending episode. Like many novice collectors, i was mistaken in thinking that a box set means that it contains the ENTIRE story, from beginning to end. The last episode is actually like the start of things to come. However, don't let that stop you from buying this. Just make sure to buy further episodes in order to see what happens. As for the box set itself, i loved it. I laughed again and again. This set is excellent for rainy days and when you have nothing to do. If you really want a solid story base and don't have much $$$ to spare, buy the Tenchi Universe box set. It has more episodes, and although more expensive, it will be worth it. In order to find out what happens later in the OVA, you're gonna need to shell out more money and most likely buy the Tenchi movies and the Tenchi in Tokyo series (which but many people say is a butchered continuation of the Tenchi story). I myself am interested in the Universe series and look foward to buying the box set.

Review: This is the best Tenchi series by a long shot. The only complaint is it doesn't have the Mihoshi Special so that's somewhat disapointing but they have a lot to make up for it. If your one of those classic anime people, you can watch the series in subtitles with Japanese voice. Or if your like me and don't like to read, you can do regular english. Another thing is that this DVD series is uncensored so kids might want to stick to the shows on Toonami. This DVD set also comes with a nice little Tenchi encyclopedia for all your Tenchi facts and needs. ^.^

Review: Don't let the error in the official review fool you: this is the original Tenchi series. And what a series!! Tenchi Muyo is one of the most enjoyable series ever created, and I don't just mean anime. "Tenchi Muyo" tells the story of Tenchi Masaki, a young Japanese high school student, who, during his summer vacation, releases a legendary demon from the Shinto shrine where his grandfather is the priest. This mythical demon, Ryoko, follows Tenchi to his school, out for revenge for being imprisoned for 700 years by Tenchi's ancestor, Yosho. So Tenchi finds himself in a fight with a beautiful woman who can fly, cast energy bolts, phase through walls, teleport and form an energy sword. What chance does he have? There is that old sword handle he found when he awoke the demon... Ryoko turns out to have been a powerful space pirate, and as such, she's made enemies. Princess Ayeka (also spelled "Aeka") arrives, awakened from 700 years in stasis, alerted by the disturbing of Ryoko's prison. The beautiful Ayeka's not happy with Ryoko, since her fiance, Yosho (remember him?), left in pursuit of the pirate after Ryoko devastated their home planet of Jurai. Arriving with Ayeka is her cute and precocious young sister, Princess Sasami. One thing leads to another, and Ayeka and Sasami are stranded on Earth, and take up residence in Tenchi's house, along with Ryoko. Sparks fly between Ayeka and Ryoko, because of what Ryoko did to Ayeka in the past, and because both girls are now rivals for Tenchi's affection. Add into the mix Galaxy Police Officer Mihoshi, a ditzy blonde who is also a highly skilled, or unusually lucky, detective, who literally bumps into Tenchi, and THE GREATEST SCIENTIFIC GENIUS IN THE UNIVERSE, Washu, who wants Tenchi to be her guniea pig, is 20,000 years old, has a Peter Pan complex, taking the form of a 12 year old girl (except when she takes the form of an extremely sexy adult woman). Oh, and Washu is Ryoko's mother, creating the space pirate some 5,000 years ago. And both Mihoshi and Washu are both interested in Tenchi, much to the displeasure of Ryoko and Ayeka. There's also Ryo-Ohki, Ryoko's space ship, which transfroms into an adorable little cabbit, part cat, part rabbit, and has an insatiable taste for carrots. Of course, there's more. Tenchi's widowed father, Nobuyuki; his attempts to videotape his son's love-life have nothing to do with the man's hobby of peeping. Grandfather Katsuhito, Shinto Priest, Tenchi's martial art master, and much more than meets the eye. And there's Ayeka and Sasami's family, their father, Azusa, King of Jurai, his wife, the serene Lady Funaho, who was born on Earth centuries ago, and Aeka and Sasami's mother, and Azusa's other wife, Lady Misaki, who is exuberance defined. The first OVA, episodes 1-6, introduces the characters, and includes a Hall of Fame Level villian, the evil Kagato. Episode 7 was a special episode and features the comic rivalry of Ryoko and Ayeka dueling for Tenchi's affection. Episodes 8-13.5 are more slice of life, and delve into the characters, with episodes that reaveal there's more to Sasami than meets the eye and which shed light on Washu's past. Episode 13.5 is a 5 minute "slideshow" which ws totally edited from the Toonami version. Add a few goddesses into the mix, to help set things up for the next OVA release which is scheduled for mid-2002, plus a few vists to an "onsen", a Japanese hot spring spa, battles in outer space, and you have as much action and humor as could be wanted. What sets the OVA apart from the later Tenchi series, 2 TV series, 3 movies, and a spun-off alternate version starring a Sasami who has powers like Sailor Moon, which it mercilessly spoofs, is the character depth and development. Although there is plenty of action, "Tenchi Muyo" takes the time to examine the characters. Episode 3 spends a lot of time examining Ayeka's sense of heartbreak and loss, and her coming to terms with her new life. Episode 9 shows Sasami has a darker, sadder side, than the bubbly 8-10 year old girl who is also a great cook. All of the characters have great depth, which is what makes this show ultimately about a family, a family that might squabble with each other, but who are there for each other when things matter. The Mihoshi Special is scheduled to be included in the Pretty Sammy DVD release, whcih is appropriate, since the Mihoshi Special was not part of the OVA storyline, and was where the character of Pretty Sammy was first introduced. The Special was included in the video release so that Pioneer could release 7 tapes with 2 episodes each. Those have seen only Cartoon Network's version, should be advised that about 1 hour of the OVA (in bits and pieces) was not shown on TV, due to time constraints. There was also the nudity, alchohol and gambling references which didn't get past the censors. Get this DVD; it's worth it for any anime fan, and for anyone who enjoys good entertainment.

Summary: Some Like It Hot, and Some Like It Hotter
Review: While it is among the most beloved of series by anime fans, I am not that impressed with it.It seems that Masaki Kajishima couldn't leave well enough alone. He created the second OAV (out of the entire five OAV's that will comprise the series) and it falls far short. (I won't mention the obvious technical difficulties with the DVD's.)
As for the series itself, it should have been left to those first six episodes. In that first OAV, we have by far the most beautiful coloration out of any anime since. Characterization was complete and fans were treated to Matrix-like action sequences. Even the beginning was vibrant, and it still makes me feel excited to watch it. Ultimately, Kagato was killed and all was well.
Two years later the second OAV was released. The quality was sub-par. Of all the episodes, only 11 and 12 ("The Advent of the Goddess" and "Zero Ryoko") have any substance to them. The rest center around useless cliches of plots. Coloration and consistency of drawing are markedly inferior. Ends up feeling like a Benny Hill burlesque. So to simplify, stick to the first six and ditch the rest of the OAV.
And also some spoilers. Tokimi and D3 are actually the masculine and feminine aspects of her. There was a cataclysm 20,000 years ago that split up the goddesses and turned Tsunami into a tree, Washuu into a little girl and forced her memory into those orbs, Tokimi was split up into herself and D3. Furthermore, this OAV will center on the goddess' war and tenchi's choice for a girlfriend. OAV four will conclude the war and the story. OAV 5 will be an epilogue that shows what happens when Tenchi and the gang fall under the control of Jurai. But as promising as those are, they had better drop the other shoe, because it ended on quite the lackluster note to a dull follow-up.

Summary: Sure, it's Tenchi, but...
Review: Tenchi Muyo will always be one of my all-time favorite 'toons from either side of the International Date Line. However, this box set isn't is cool as it could have been. The packaging, while nifty, is kind of tricky to put back together once you're done watching. The only chapter breaks are at each episode, so if you wanna skip forward to a certain part of an episode, you have to use the fast-forward button. The discs are set up so that the Japanese soundtrack with English subtitles is the default setup (the first bilingual anime DVD I've seen that does that), so you'll have to mash buttons on your remote control to remove the subtitles and switch over to the excellent English dub soundtrack if, like me, you prefer it. And, worst of all... the Mihoshi Special episode is missing for no good reason. >:( Otherwise, you get a good picture and good sound with Dolby and all that junk. I mean, the content of the disc is great; too bad Pioneer drops the ball a bit in the presentation.

Summary: "No Need For an Excuse to Buy Tenchi DVD!"
Review: This boxed set of the Tenchi Muyo collection is AMAZING! It has the OVA (Original Version Animation) series! This is the best Tenchi series because it isn't like "Tenchi Universe" series, which has been bought by Cartoon Network and cencored untill there was nothing left, turning it into a dumb little kid show. Tenchi has alot of Adult Situations but is definately not a Hentai. The main idea is that an ordinary boy (Tenchi Masaki) becomes friends with a group of HOT girls from outer-space who decide to take up residence Masaki household (much to Tenchi's father's glee). As life goes on, Tenchi and the girls (Washu, Ryoko, Ayeka, Sasami, Mihoshi, and Kiyone) encounter a series of wacky adventures taking them into outer space and beyond.
This is the absolute BEST deal!

Review: This is by far my favorite anime series...The characters are wonderful and 3 dimensional, the story is great, the humor is clever. The only bad part is it ends in a cliffhanger! I will wait with baited breath for the finale of this series to come out! The OAV is a must have for anime fans...although I think the other two spin off series can be left for rental or television.

Summary: DVD box-set far from complete...
Review: I typically do not review things I do not own but in this case I will make an exception. For starters this is a great series that I have always loved. It's quirky style of romantic comedy, involving a "normal" boy and girls from outerspace, is completely it's own. The box set has a lot of things going for it. The Tenchi series has always been treated with a lot of care by Pioneer in terms of audio and video quality and this is no exception. The 13 episodes featured are beautiful. The extras are nice, the production was really above and beyond. Regardless, there is a reason I do not and will never own this set, simply it is incomplete. It is missing the Mihoshi Special, which was one of my favorite episodes and has always been included in the VHS and laser-disk OAV collections. I emailed Pioneer about why it was omitted from the DVD set, and cannot get an official response. I won't discourage people from buying these DVDs, but you should know what you are getting. If you really want the complete series, get the VHS. I give this a 3 because of it's incompleteness.
