Summary: A classic series, but where's Mihoshi Special?
Review: There are now to date four different Tenchi continuities. Besides this, the first, there is TENCHI UNIVERSE, (which is continued by three movies,) TENCHI IN TOKYO, and PRETTY SAMMY, a three-part O.A.V. series that is continued by the T.V. series MAGICAL PROJECT S. Most of you already know the story, about an ordinary Japanese high school boy and the alien women who love him. It is first and foremost a si-fi/comedy/romance, but it has a fair amount of action, too. Now you can get the entire series on one D.V.D. pack, but there's one problem-THERE'S NO MIHOSHI SPECIAL! The Mihoshi Special episode, where she tells the others about something that supposedly happened to her, takes place within the O.A.V. continueity, but it's on a seperate D.V.D. This also means Kiyone dosen't show up anywhere here. (Her only appearence in the first series was in Mihoshi Special.) Otherwise, though, this is a great buy. Summary: The best of Tenchi Muyo
Review: Comedy, brief plots separated by charming bits of everyday life, characters that are both shallow and mysterious at the same time, fine animation, and a delightful soundtrack that's rich in atmosphere. It's as though someone captured the magic of a good childhood and burned it onto a DVD. The second run (Tenchi Universe) isn't quite as good, and everything after that was done by different people and ended up being unwatchable.

Summary: First times the charm for the Tenchi saga.
Review: The OAV (or direct to video) was the first of the Tenchi series to be produced, not the TV shows as suggested elsewhere. It is by far the best of the three series produced. You'd think the authors of the series lacked imagination, in that they remade this story, three separate times. The second series, "Tenchi Universe", was dumbed down for younger kids to watch on tv, and I can understand that decision from a marketing point of view. Unfortunately, they remade it a third time, from the beginning again, as "Tenchi in Tokyo". The last series began in the future, and told a different origin story in flashback. This boxed set is the first story, and its the best told, plus it makes the most sense as a Science Fiction tale. The story itself if rather simple, a young Tenchi gets overly curious, and mistakenly releases a 700 year old demon, who takes her original form, as a teenaged girl named Ryoko. Initially wanting revenge for her imprisonment, she begins a path of destruction. Tenchi manages to slow her down, and she takes an interest in him. Unfortunately for Tenchi, and planet Earth, her release has attracted a lot of intergalactic attention. In a short period of time, Tenchi has developed a collection of jealous females, who all want him for various purposes. Ryoko for carnal cravings, Ayeka because she thinks its political destiny, Washu because she wants to experiment on him and his hidden power, Mishoshi because she seems to have the blessings of his grandfather, Ryo-Ohki because it/she likes Tenchi, and Sasami because she thinks she'll grow up and marry him. The story revolves around the zany antics of those competitors as they compete for Tenchi, but help each other when danger strikes. Tenchi has some action, but is not an action series it is essentially a comedy series. The main strength of Tenchi is the diversity of characters, and its unique view of the universe. You have teleporting space pirates, mega genius scientists, beings who rule the galaxy, and derive their power from giant trees. Every character is well developed, and featured in their own way. This Box set is somewhat expensive, but does have some nice extras and is very well packaged. The quality of the DVDs is good. This is one of the few series, where the English speaking voice actors, clearly exceed their Japanese counterparts. There is additionally, a set of "No Need For Tenchi" graphic novels, for sale elsewhere on this site. The nice thing about those, is they pick up exactly where this series leaves off, and extend the Tenchi OAV world. Rumors persist of a follow-up to the OAV finally coming out of Japan, but it may be a while yet.

Review: Tenchi muyo is a great anime, but with some nudity kids might want to be sheltered from. I recommend this hilarious viewing to any otaku, old or new! Watch it today!

Summary: I love Tenchi
Review: This is my favorite Anime Series. It's funny, exciting, and it deals with a lot of deep issues as well. The only thing I didn't like about the OAV DVD Boxed set is that it left out the Mihoshi special which was included in the VHS set. The only Tenchi Series that I didn't like was the Tenchi in Tokyo one. It was too.."gotta stop this episode's monster" for me. I hope they do complete the third OAV installment soon.

Summary: Tenchi Muyo OAV-goodness
Review: Tenchi Muyo is probably not for everyone, but those who love it, adore it. It has tons of elements you could want in an anime: intense action, comedy, romance, wacky characters, and a good, involving storyline. It all started when high school student Tenchi freed the demon Ryoko from captivity, all because he was curious. Soon enough, Tenchi finds himself surrounded by alien women: Jurai princesses Ayeka and Sasami, mad scientist Little Washu, scatter-brained Galaxy Pirate Mihoshi... Poor Tenchi! To me, the best thing about the OAV series is that most of the episodes are like feature anime films! Because they're such good quality, animation and story-wise. The OAV is just amazing, hands-down. I love love love it! Okay, I'm gonna stop raving like a mad anime maniac now. ;P

Summary: A Classic Of Sorts
Review: * The Japanese TENCHI-MUYO ("No Need For Tenchi") series is one
of the best-known and most popular anime series. It involves
Tenchi Masaki, a Japanese high-school kid, and a flock of females
who compete for his attention: prissy Space Princess Ayeka; loose
Space Pirate Ryoko; Ayeka's sweet little sister Sasami (who has a
semi-mystical grown-up alter-ego, the goddesslike Tsunami);
egotistical mad scientist Washu; and Galaxy Policewoman Mihoshi,
the archetypical airhead blonde. They all go through a series of
cosmic adventures, dealing with galactic villains while Tenchi
tries to deal, awkwardly, with the women's advances and their
squabbling. On the face of it, it is not entirely clear why TENCHI-MUYO would
be regarded as a classic. The production values / artwork are OK
but nothing particularly impressive; the whole "hapless kid
surrounded by bickering crazy females" bit has been completely done to
near-death by anime series; and the story line is meandering and littered
with odd dead ends -- for example, a mega-villain named the Goddess
is introduced and then basically forgotten without much further
explanation. The answer to why TENCHI-MUYO is popular is simply that it is good
fun. It is entirely good-natured, almost always entertaining, and
even has its imaginative and inspiring bits on occasion.
As far as the basic scenario being overly familiar goes,
it was apparently TENCHI-MUYO that made it popular,
and it is no fault of TENCHI-MUYO that it has been
done to near-death by others. To be sure, the TENCHI-MUYO franchise has been largely done to
death over the years by its own creators, but this "original
anime video (OAV)" is the master source and almost unarguably the
best treatment. The TENCHI-MUYO manga series follows the
basic premises of the OAV.
If you've seen the original TENCHI-MUYO TV series, sometimes called
"TENCHI UNIVERSE" -- a pun, since "Ten-Chi" is "Heaven-Earth" ==
"Cosmos" in Japanese -- it uses mostly the same characters,
though it introduces another Galaxy Policewoman, Kiyone, as a foil
for Mihoshi, while sadly dropping Tsunami. However, it reconstructs the
plot along different lines. Although the TV series does not have the
loose ends of the OAV, it is also relatively stilted and hackneyed
and substantially less fun, though it has its good bits. One word of warning about the OAV is that it has a few rudish
scenes, nothing that would shock an adult or adolescent much but
which are inappropriate for smaller kids. I originally saw the
OAV in translation on CARTOON NETWORK, and after watching the
DVD I understood why there were a few confusing scenes that
seemed to have important elements cut out -- and also understood
exactly why they were cut out. In sum, the TENCHI-MUYO OAV is something I would be reluctant
to praise too much or too little. It is by no means a great
work of art and I doubt it would impress an open-minded viewer
who was not an anime fan. However, almost any anime fan will
likely enjoy it and consider it time and effort well spent.

Summary: Simply Awesome with ONE Problem
Review: This is my favorite anime series period! On the surface, "Tenchi Muyo!" appears to be nothing more than a typical harem sub-genre of the romantic-comedy anime genre. However, once I'd seen the 13 (or 13.5) episodes, I suddenly wanted to watch it again. Why? Because there was a very interesting overall story-arc that had been told and I wanted to focus on that. "Tenchi Muyo!" is the original Tenchi. This 3-DVD set contains the 13.5 episodes or the original OAV (Original Animation Video) series. Episodes 1-6 (OAV 1) and episode 7 (OAV special) are on disc 1. Disc 2 contains episodes 8-13 (OAV 2) and the small special which is attached to the end of episode 13 after the credits (sometimes refered to as episode 13.5). Disc 3 contains the Tenchi Encyclopedia which contains a lot of very valuable information. Most of this appears to have been taken from "Tenchi 101" -- a small Japanese book where series creator Kajishima-san answers 101 questions about this series. There are a lot of questions answered here though not all. I won't bother going into the story of "Tenchi Muyo!" as there are other reviews which have done that not to mention numerous websites out there including one I'm writing for. Just do a google search on the series and "Tigercow" and you can find my writing(s). What I will say is that this series is well written. The characters are well developed and very interesting. The humor covers a wide range from slap stick to somewhat vulgar. The animation is good as is the artwork. So what did I not like? All of the blasted nudity! In Japan, anime OAV's have less restrictions placed on them than do anime TV series. As such, the series contains a ton of nudity, especially with the character of Ryoko. Now, I like her character the best because she has the greatest growth. However, I just got tired of the series people constantly finding ways to make her nude, primarily by having her in an onsen (bathhouse). However, there's an episode where she's captured and placed in a giant vial -- naked! This was the only real problem I had with this otherwise great series. Bottom line: as the father of the harem genre, this series kicks butt on almost every front. Outside of the nudity, this is a very worthy addition to anyone's DVD collection.

Summary: The first and best Tenchi series
Review: The first Tenchi show made. Tenchi Muyo is about a 17-year old boy named Tenchi Masaki. When he was young, his grandfather told him stories about his ancestor Yosho slaying a demon. The demon rested in the cave by the Masaki Shine. Tenchi got the keys and went in the cave. Tenchi wakes up a demon name Ryoko(she looks human...oh well!). Then Tenchi meets 4 other girls and they all want his love. And thats how it all started(well, sorta). There are three discs in this box set. The first disc has the 1st OVA & the second one has the 2nd OVA. The 13 episodes are uncut & bilingual(English & Japanese)with English subtitles. The third disc has a Tenchi Encyclopedia(Version 3) that has character bios, trailers, & more. The only thing they didn't put on was The Mihoshi Special, but that's available on a separate DVD(with the Pretty Sammy OVA).

Summary: A good experience
Review: This boxed set was most pleasurable, the best work I have seen
ever.I have almost every tenchi muyo dvd known to man.I thought
the first tench movie was good the only thing that was bad was the music composed by that Christofor Franke who couldn't compose sheet music to save his life. All in all I give this thing a five star rating.
