Summary: Simply a classic
Review: If you've never heard of Tenchi (shame on you :P) you definitely should get aquainted with it pretty quick. And what better way than to check out the greatest part of this entire series (including the three movies, tenchi universe, and tenchi in tokyo) in my opinion. This is a must have for any anime fan. There's humor, action, a great, but sometimes rather unexplained, story, and absolutely wonderful characters (except for Ayeka of course).

Or...if you've only seen Tenchi Muyo on Toonami, you definitely need to see this UNCUT series. It's like a totally different series. Such a shame what Toomani actually cut out of this wonderful show -- it's a travesty. This is a "character-driven" anime; it doesn't rely too heavily on action or whatever else (like DBZ). Tenchi IS about the characters, and that's one of the things that makes this one of the best animes out there.

One sidenote: both my friend and I have had trouble with this box set on both of our DVD players (both of which are made by Pioneer...go figure). Sometimes it won't play, or has some serious video problems. I don't know if anyone else has had this problem, but it may be something to watch out for. Since the problem occurs on an older version of this set, the problem is probably fixed. It's worth it anyway.

Definitely a great buy and a worthwhile addition to any anime collection. I hope that Pioneer releases a box set of Tenchi Universe as well (they can keep Tenchi in Tokyo on the shelf what I think it belongs).

Summary: Toonami?....NOT...this is better!
Review: Okay, the version of Tenchi on Cartoon Network is fine, but it doesn't compare to the OVA. First, the original Japanese dialog contains far more energy than the dubbed English. The words are more explicit. Of course, if you're not familiar with watchng subtitled films, it can test a persons concentration. After a few viewings, it's not much of a problem. The animation is first rate. TV broadcast, even via cable, can't compare with the DVD clarity. Not that Tenchi is detailed, it's the colors that really jump out. Of course, my cable service is POOR at best...:-) For persons who may have young children around, there is nudity and adult situations. Dolby 5.1 is awesome (works only with the Japanese track). The sound really fills the room, and I don't even own a high end surround system. If there is something to complain about, it's the way the disks are held in the case. It's not easy to get them out. I don't like to bend DVDs or CDs when removing them, and it's difficult not to do so when taking these disks from the case. Maybe Pioneer could use the newer style holder for future runs. My recommendations: 1) buy this set, 2) have your DVD player setup to play the Japanese track on by default, 3) view this on a 24" screen.

Summary: Best of the Tenchi Series
Review: After seeing most of the Tenchi Series available ( minus the movies ), the OVA always brings me back.

I'm unsure if I could point to the specific elements that make this particular part of the series better then the others, however this is definatly the favorite. The character development is great, and the story is hilarious, yet it can be emotionally moving at times.

The quality on this release is wonderful, and have found no visual / audio problems thus far ( only first viewing ). The Japanese audio tracks in Dobly Digital 5.1, and after watching in this format, I have no want to even see the English dub.

The only other thing I would add is that though the actual case specifies ages 13 and older, parents may wish to view the series through once and judge for themselves as to the appropriateness of the content.

If you love Tenchi ( or maybe even if you don't ) You'll love the OVA.

Review: Its probably the best of the series but, it doesn't reunite anybody. This was the frist of Tenchi and it was sooo popular they made it in to a TV series, (Tenchi Universe)

Summary: A story of a boy and the women who are obsessed with him.
Review: The most endearing aspect of Tenchi Muyo is clearly the characters. These are complex people, not your usual rack of bubbleheads (well, there's one bubblehead, but even she has some depth). How they relate to each other is what addicts me to this series. The intrique and the occasional titanic battle that happen are extremely well done, and the humor translates rather well, but the characters are what push this from three to five stars.

The OVA contains the original plotline for Tenchi Muyo. A couple of tv series, "Tenchi Muyo" and later, "Tenchi in Tokyo" saw the character backgrounds and the circumstances of their meeting changed, giving different reasons for the character's various motivations. Each series stands well by itself. As far as character crafting is concerned, I think this to be the best of the episodic Tenchi offerings, especially with regard to Ryoko and Ayeka, although some of the other series offered slightly better plotlines. This take on them makes their motivations as actions much more believable.

Ryoko is a genetically engineered killing machine, who is just now learning to cope with autonomy and emotions. She is in many ways simply a child with the ability to scorch planets. Ayeka, when you begin to get deep into her motivations, is a pretty shrewed character who is prepared to go to great lengths to protect her and her family's intrests. I liked her better as the more stable of the two. Katsuhito is downright machiavellian, yet you'd happily trust your life to the guy.

It's main weakness, and I feel the main reason why the characters were re-tooled in later efforts, is that they become far too powerfull too quickly. Once you have ultimate power, you just arn't threatened by much. It makes for some awsome battles here, but you can't blame them for toning it down. You can assign each series in it's chronological order by how many powers have been stripped from Ryoko. :) They had to introduce what effectively amount to gods to give them any challenge at all by the end of the OVA.

The third disk has lots of great information on it, although the clips have no english audio or subtitles.

The media is prepared excellently with very few arifacts. There is one glitch in the begining of "Zero Ryoko" that my computer would simply choke to death on, but my player doesn't even detect it.

To sum it up: If you buy this, be prepared to fall in love and buy all the rest.

Summary: Give your home theater a workout with this box set!
Review: I was reading all the other reviews and figured I'd put my two cents in. This is a beatifully rendered box set of an anime classic and deserves much more than five stars. And for all of the reviewers who are complaining about the English voice-acting, let me just say that being fluent in Japanese will dispel those concerns in a hurry. The English track is more expressive than the Japanese one. I actually prefer the English version, even though it's only in 2.0 (just set it on V-Dolby and you'll be fine). Pioneer's voice-acting staff is superb, and the translation is fantastic as well (it gets muddled in the later episodes, but YOU try to tie the plot together...) I hear they just barely made THX certification with the video, but it is still crisp, colorful, and comprable to high-end Disney animation that costs ten times as much to produce. Watch the OVA first and then check out the thousands of other Tenchi titles - you will quickly become a Tenchi fanatic like myself. And the box set is Region 1 AND 4 encoded, meaning I can play it on my high-end Japanese player rather than my crappy American DVD (thanks again, Pioneer!) Unlike a lot of anime titles, Tenchi Muyo actually has soul and wit. Compare it to titles with superb animation but less-than-appealing plot lines and characters (aka Ghost in the Shell or the two Macross Plus compilations) and you'll see what I mean. Tenchi Muyo has everything and the kitchen sink - romance, drama, action, and - best of all - Ryoko! Buy it today!

Review: This show was about a teenage Japanese boy living in a Shrine in Japan. He led a fairly normal life until one day He met Some girls from outer space. Then his life changed a whole lot. I think The whole entire Tenchi muyo sega was one of the Funniest anime There is... If your looking for action You wont find much here... I would Go to Dragon ball Z for that. But if Your looking for a great Time this is the place to be...This has GREAT animation and if you really Like anime and looking for a good time...This is the place to look.

Review: when i bought this collection, i was really interested in knowing what tenchi was all about. i saw one episode off of toonami, and i felt at that moment i wanted to see more. well i got the set. and now im off to buying more. its funny and amusing and its also really far fetched, but amusing. i enjoyed buying this collection set completely. my only dissapointment was the third dvd.its an encyclopedia supposedly. it really doesnt serve a real purpose and thats why i gave it a 4 star rating. but i must say this is a totally enjoyable series.
