Summary: Matrix Trilogy of Anime
Review: This is wildly overrated. Other people have said that the last disc of the series resolved nothing. This shouldn't have come as much of a surprise to them -- it wasn't until the end of disc 4 that there was actually a tangible plot, and that plot wasn't developed further until disc 7. By this time, they've changed half of their world-building to fit their evolving philosophical exploration (which never gets beyond the middle-school characters). And after all of this, they've got several sequences where they leave the viewers staring at the same cel and listening to script plod slowly along.

Neon Genesis Evangelion, like the Matrix trilogy, isn't abominable -- but I wouldn't do it again, and can't therefore recommend that other people spend money to watch it for themselves.

If you want incomprehensible philosophizing, watch Lain -- it's more interesting.
If you want philosophizing dramatic action, watch Trigun -- it's much more powerful.
If you want useful existentialism, watch Slayers Next -- it's infinitely more enjoyable.

Summary: Shame on you hideaki Anno
Review: I couldn't agree more with Manasseh Quisenberry from Bremerton.
The series starts good but falls flat at the end. The last two episodes are forced into the series. Many questions were left out to be answered in the 2 movies like a way of sucking more money from the fans just to leave us with the same ending that we hated in the first place. Hideaki Anno is infamous just because of his great ability to anger his fans by hitting them under the belt TWICE.

Borrow it from a friend or rent it at most but please don't buy it.
Don't spend your money on something that leaves you with a hollow feeling at the end. If I had the option of rent I wouldn't have bought it either. After all, if you are an anime fan, you have to watch Neon Genesis evangelion because it has so many original ideas. Too bad it was ruined at the end by the troubled mind of its director.

I cant wait for the suqel to come out the live action one I think it will be badass. I can't wait to see what happend after end of evangelion. ill just watch other action anime intill then

Summary: unfufilled potential
Review: Ok..... its very over hyped, and very good, but most of you people are far too extreme.
Its not awful, and its not god's gift to man, that would be me!

Theres alot of potential for a truly brilliant piece of art here, but i think laziness and reality set in at some point and things didnt go quite as planned.

1st major complaint is that the series isnt particularly well put together, it seems like its made by 3 different creative minds, which would be fine but the pieces dont tie together as acts of an overall story line even. for about the first 10-15 episodes plot development is a little on the infantile side, the creators seem much more facinated with showing how cool Evas destroying strange looking angels can be, then The plot develops. Theres tons of political intrigue, philisophical and religious overtones, and the ground work for some very deep character interaction and relationships. But all this is abandoned for the final 2 episodes of mindless philosophical rambling.

now i know this will get me in troule but let me explain why the last 2 episodes destroy the entire series. 1st off they threw away all plot and character development to focus on shinji's mental problems. 2nd Beating people over the head with your philosophical ramblings is not good art. this is why the 2nd matrix film failed. To subtly and with in the confines of the plot adress philisophical issues is all well and good and an important facet of most art, but to just have characters ramble on the nature of man while flashing abstract images for an hour is not entertainment it pretentious

I think that this could have been briliant but poor execution prevented it, and its a shame, but its not the worst thing ever, and its not the greatest anime ever... im not sure what that would be but this is not it

Summary: good good good
Review: Okay, I'm almost positive I'm going to step on a lot of toes with this review.

Ever since its debut in 1996 in Japan, the anime world has heard of nothing else but Neon Genesis Evangelion. Fans and otaku immediately fell in love with Gainax's newest controversial production featuring unique mecha design, characters, and an enigmatic story. The growth of popularity for this series has far outstripped anything else, including Sailor Moon and DragonBall Z. Many have gone as far to claim that Neon Genesis Evangelion is the best anime that has ever been made.

I disagree.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not saying Evangelion is bad by any stretch of the imagination. There are a lot of really good things about it, and it's a series that I definitely enjoy watching. But there are some things about it that really grate on me, that keep me from giving this GOOD title the BEST rating possible.

Well, let's actually do some reviewing, okay? Like mentioned before, Evangelion includes within it some truly striking art and animation. The mecha designs are a departure from the tried-and-true Giant Robot template as only Gainax Studios can deliver. While perhaps not the most technically outstanding of productions, the style of execution make Evangelion a drama that stands head-and-shoulders above most else that is out there. Classical scoring pumps up the drama. Stills and pans capture crucial moments in the action. And the occasional "artsy," inscrutable angle helps add to the many questions the series poses as it progresses.

The story of Evangelion, however, is what most fans remember most about the series (besides the trademark Gainax fanservice, of course). Evangelion pumps up the "secret agenda" card as far as it could possibly go, with every episode posing at least two or three more questions for every one question they answer. Just what ARE the Angels? What is NERV (or Gendou) really after? Who the heck is Adam, and what's this Human Complement Project everyone's talking about? And does Rei have a personality somewhere in there? This is definitely not a series to watch out of sequence, and piecing together the story is at least half the fun.

There are only a few minor things, though, that stop this from being a title of the highest caliber in my book. Many people say that Evangelion has some great characterization, but I actually found it to be a little cliche, or just plain irritating at times. Shinji is ALWAYS down in the dumps, feeling sorry f or himself. Asuka is ALWAYS being an arrogant little snot. Rei is ALWAYS ... well, Rei (why in the world do so many people like her so much?). I had seen these sorts of characters before, and Evangelion doesn't really break any new ground here. Also, the main underlying premise of the series (once the series finally gets around to telling you what it is) is more than a bit preposterous, and even on the sacrilegious side (something I don't tolerate very well). Gainax tried _really_ hard to do some thing no one else had tried before, but in this case, it's a bit too much, and certainly more than I can swallow. And the ending episodes ... well, you'll see what I mean when you get to them.

If you're looking for an entertaining series full of action, intrigue and "waitaminute!" moments, you'll probably love Neon Genesis Evangelion. Ten thousand drooling otakus can't be wrong, right? ':-)

Review: When i first saw this series i was amazed with it of course i accidently watched the movies first.... but when i finally got to see this series i was into it deeply i couldnt move away from it , from the exciting angel attack scenes to the low wit scenes of Asuka being herself and full of herself i must add , But Rei Ayanami was what drawn me to the series so if your a Mecha fan get this series i guarantee you wont be disappointed

Summary: Simply Incredible
Review: This anime series is incredible. The character development is a fundamental factor in the series. You will feel for the characters and develop empathy and hatred for them. Every single of the plot is important and you must see everything to understand all the development. This not the typical mecha series. You will find religious references, sexual references and finally the development of the human soul. Another important aspect of the story is the continous references to the psycoanalysis. Hideaki Anno is an excelent anime creator and this is his masterpiece. When you buy it remember there is a lot of heart, hatred, love, character development and a lot of story for those not afraid to think of the possibilities.

Summary: Brilliant but confusing
Review: From the first time I saw this series on TV I loved it. I was to young at the time to get all the philosophical connotations. Now that I have watched it again, I understand a lot more.
There are so many reasons to love this series. Interesting and deep characters, that are thoroughly developed and explored through the series, philosophical thoughts about life death and the future of humankind, interspaced with some exciting fight sequences. The story also alludes to aspects of religion and mythology that makes the viewer compelled to find out more. What is frustrating is that not all of these questions are answered in the series.
Lovers of the series should watch "The End of Evangellion" just for the sake of seeing how it ends and to clear up some of the questions that the series leaves you with, even though it is a bit harrowing watching it and it spawns even more questions.
Watch this series. It's well worth the confusion

Summary: you will like this show
Review: ok if you like anime you MUST see this show it's one of the greatest animes of all time. it has a great story with awsome characters and it's a fun series to follow. it's got some breathtaking animation and the music is great. i really can't think of anything i didn't like about the series except it did have a few sexual scenes in it that were kinda weird cause most the characters are 14 so it's kinda gross when they are naked. for me this series stands out as one of the greatest animes i've ever seen not just because of the action and fun story but there's also some underlying themes about god and the bible which is pretty cool.
