Review: I bought this series after watching the Escaflowne Movie. I was intrigued by the Movie so I decided to try the series to see if it was as good, if not better than the movie. I can honestly say that the movie is great, but the series is even better because there is more depth and development to the characters.

This is definitely a must have series for anyone who loves Anime.

Summary: An Anime For Otakus
Review: I am doing a premature review of this product seeing that I have only watched episodes contained on discs 1-4 of this 8 disc set.

Escaflowne is a well-thought out story with excellent animation and character development. I love the music by fabu-musician Yoko Kanno too. Her use of strings really sets the mood for the dramatic moments.

Escaflowne begins (to whet your appeitite for more) one fateful day when high school sprinter Hitomi Kanzaki experiences a disturbing vision of another world and discovers from her best friend that Amano (the track team star she has a crush on) is about to go abroad. On an impulse, she asks him the next day for her first kiss -- if, she can sprint 100 meters in thirteen seconds. But then, a young warrior prince and a dragon appears before Hitomi during the run ... that's when Hitomi's world gets turned upside down as she is transported to the warrior prince's homeworld of Gaia!

This Limited Edition Boxed Set comes with a beautiful Black Escaflowne figurine and tons of special features.

Dialogue is offered in both English and original Japanese with English Subtitles.

This is an anime series not to be missed by an Otaku of any level of experience.

Summary: Some thing for everyone
Review: Escaflowne in under a thousand words, tough...

Well I'll start with some back ground. Escaflowne is the creation of Shoji Kawamori, best known for Macross. His influence really shows through, Escaflowne shares many common themes, love triangles, feasibly sized giant robots and most importantly that love is the most powerful force there is. Kawamori opted not to direct as he felt he was too involved in the creation to do a good job so Kazuki Akane was brought in.

Escflowne is a fantasy epic more in the tradition C.S. Lewis's "The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe" than "Lord of the rings". It's a romance, it's an adventure story, it's a rites of passage story, it's got giant robots it's got it all and it all sits together perfectly.

Perhaps what really makes Escaflowne is the characters. Every last character from the main characters to the minor supporting players seem believable as people. They're not irritatingly wound up in their own angst, they're not too perfect at conveying they're feelings. I was really able to identify with every character in some respect.

In terms of design Escflowne is quite unusual. The style is taken from girls comics. It's beautifully carried off and gives the entire series a distinctive and unique look. The character designs themselves are brilliant, well thought out and really well suited to the characters and their background. The mecha designs are excellent, everything has a fantasy look about.

I can't go with out mentioning the music, it's Yoko Kano so needless to say it's good. The covers grandiose symphonic pieces that put John Williams to shame to Poppy songs that some how avoid being cheesy. I really can't do it justice, suffice to say the music is good.

After 26 episodes everything is neatly wrapped up. You are not left with unanswered questions, the story isn't left unfinished and at the same time you don't feel that your intelligence has been insulted. It ends with perfect executing of ending that has made grown men cry.

Well now to the bad. The series is too short. It was originally planned to run for 39 episodes and the compression of the story is sometimes clear. The middle of the story runs straight into the end plot without enough punctuation. Another effect of this is that there aren't enough episodes or pairs of episodes which have a self contained sub story. The few there are are very good but there just isn't enough, especially later in the series. Also I found the English language sound track totally unwatchable. My Japanese isn't great but I do know that the subtitles aren't 100% accurate.

Escaflowne is a fantasy epic carried off with skill and integrity. You could argue that it's the greatest work of anime in the last decade. It's not perfect but it's near enough. If your an anime fan and you didn't buy the discs seperately then this is a must. If your new to anime then I can think of no better place to start.

Summary: A Masterpiece
Review: EscaFlowne is one of the greatest anime series' of all time. The story of a girl taken from her world and deposited in another, Gaea. The story grabs you from the very beginning of the first episode and doesn't let you go. The characters are the best I've seen since Neon Genesis Evangelion, the mechs are fantastic, and the music is top notch. If you love anime, and I know you do, you will not hesitate to buy this series or at least borrow it from a friend.

Summary: Is it really worth it
Review: I have to say that i am not a hardcore anime fan, at least i wasnt until i ran inot the Escaflowne series at our public library. I saw all the episodes and once i get an easy 200 i will buy the dvd boxset. That is because there is something magical about the story of Escaflowne that is difficult to put into words. All i can say is "one has to see it in order to believe." And i can almost guarantee that you like i, will fall in love with these series.

Summary: The Best
Review: I can't write a huge review, but I just gotta tell you that this series is THE best. If you're a fantasy fanatic, you'll be in paradise. And if you're not, you will be.

This series is a story about Hitomi, a high school girl, who encounters a prince, named Van Fanel, from the alternate world of Gaia. Hitomi and Van, initially trying to find a way to return Hitomi to her own world, experience countless adventures and meet a huge host of friends and foes. The conflicts and the revelations of the connections between characters stack up to a wonderful adventure that teaches everyone something about love, fantasy and reality, and the meaning of life. This simply is the best anime you could ever find anywhere. You will be completely satisfied with your purchase.

Summary: You may or may not like it, but I think it rules!!
Review: Ahh...Escaflowne, my most beloved anime. This series is an extremely high quality anime that is on par with even Gundam. It will most certainly go down as a classic with Otaku. Escaflowne takes place in a world that is nothing like anything else seen in anime. It is a fantasy-type world, but Guymelefs, a kind of mecha/armor, are the weapons of the world. Unlike much fantasy anime, magic is not a prominent theme, but rather human will. The story is a magnificent one revolving around themes of war, deceit, adventure, romance, friendship, and much more. It reminds me very slightly of a Final Fantasy game, simply in the way that the writers were able to combine so many strong themes into one storyline. The characters are unforgettable and their adventures highly entertaining. The sound effects are part of the new age of sound in anime in which the effects are much more realistic as opposed to the sounds of Gundam (You would probably recognize what I mean if you watched them both quite a bit, as I have.) The music is also top-notch, written by the legendary Yoko Kanno, who also did the music for Cowboy Bebop and Macross Plus, a huge surprise (dripping with sarcasm) considering that they were all created by the same team. The animation starts off as some of the highest quality seen in anime today, but begins to level off toward average at about the 15th episode. As good as all of those things are, however, I must admit that Escaflowne is not for everyone. If you cannot stand Shojuo-type stuff at all and are only looking for action, look elsewhere, 'cuz Escaflowne's got depth and class.

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Low quality DVDs of a masterful series
Review: Escaflowne is a really brilliant series, and deserves five stars. However, this particular DVD edition suffers from dark, fuzzy pictures and muddy sound, which robs Shoji Kawamori's animation and Yoko Kanno's soundtrack of some of their impact. Cleaned up and remastered, this would be a masterpiece; as it is, it's still a must-see.
