Summary: REMARKABLE, A MUST SEE MOVIE
Review: I just returned from seeing this movie in the theatre, and I must say it was breathtaking!! The visuals were remarkable. I thought the CGI was great!

But one thing that was really remarkable to me was the traditionally painted backgrounds!! They were the best i have ever seen, PERIOD! I was wondering when the day would come that I would see better background paintings than in Akira, that day was today. The CGI in the backgrounds just enhanced it!!

In regards to the character designs....I LOVED THEM!! Of course they had an "Astroboy" feel. But even better they reminded me of some of the earlier Fliescher studios Popeye, and BettyBoop cartoons. Really Really great work, really refreshing to see unique hand drawn character animation when 3d CGI is so hot!!!

A great film! This is the type of film that will non animation fans over to animation!

Wow I can't wait til I get the dvd, gonna have to go see it again on the big screen soon:)

Summary: Bravo Bravo
Review: Metropolis is definitely very impressive. It restores my faith in animation (I was very disappointed at final fantasy and Disney's Atlantis). Although the actual animating skill is not as good as Disney, but everything else obviously surpass it. The visual looks extremely rich and beautiful. Each fame is composed very carefully. The world and character designs are excellent.
The only thing I do not like is the pacing of the film. It seems a bit slow and constant. There isn't really an obvious rising action and climax of the plot and mood. But nonetheless, this film is worth the 5 stars for its artistic achievement and effort. It didn't make the mistake Disney made in Atlantis, where they want to make something new, but they held back on a lot of things. Metropolis is rich in both visual and creativity. Bravo.

Summary: Animation ahead of its time!!!
Review: A lot of praise has been made for this ambitious anime. They are all correct! In the coming years, comparisons will be made to this film in regards to its innovative and largely successful use of 2d and 3d integration. This is a must for animators and fans of animation in general. Also for fans of DR.STRANGELOVE, Lang's METROPOLIS, AKIRA, BLADE RUNNER, ASTRO BOY, Fleischer's work....nuff said!

Summary: Work Smart Not Hard
Review: * METROPOLIS, a Japanese animation film by Katsuhiro Otomo (of AKIRA
fame) and colleagues, is an adaptation of a late-1940s manga (Japanese
comic) series by Osamu Tezuka, the godfather of Japanese animation
and comics. The manga was in turn inspired by Fritz Lang's silent-film
sci-fi classic, METROPOLIS.

METROPOLIS takes place in a city of breathtaking skyscrapers sitting on
top of underground complexes populated by humans and robots. The
society of Metropolis is caste-oriented, with an elite at the top of
the skyscrapers and a downtrodden, restless underclass at the lowest
level of the underground, with armed fascist gangs maintaining their
idea of order while a revolutionary underground arms for an uprising.

The story begins with the opening of the "Ziggarut", which despite its
name is a skyscraper, not a step pyramid. It is the creation of the
aristocratic Duke Red, an ambitious man with an obscure agenda. His
adopted son, Rock, leader of the fascist gangs, idolizes the Duke but
has an agenda of his own, which he carries out by indifferently
shooting anything in his way. A lad from Japan named Kenichi arrives
with his uncle, a detective in pursuit of a fugitive, and the two
become involved in the intrigues, which revolve around a pretty
android named Tima.

METROPOLIS is, particularly by anime standards, an impressive
production job, mixing elaborate computer-generated visuals with
excellent character artwork in Tezuka's style (though they made the
legs longer). It takes an interesting "retro" approach, with airships
flying over the city and a soundtrack mostly focused on old-time pop
tunes and New Orleans jazz -- SAINT JAMES INFIRMARY in an anime, what
a surprise -- and also makes good use of a Ray Charles number.

The end result is a movie that is visually dazzling and technically
impressive but fails to be memorable, not in spite of these things
but because of them. There is a fundamental clash between the
computer graphics and Tezuka's artwork style, and more to the point
the characters end up being lost in the scenery -- sort of like a
theatrical stage that is so elaborate it's hard to spot the actors.
Somehow I ended up thinking of the kind of web pages that are full
of bells and whistles but don't have any content.

The story actually seems basically sound, and the irony is that
METROPOLIS seems like it could have been a very good movie if
substantially less effort had been spent on the computer graphics and
more on getting up-close with the characters. In practice, METROPOLIS
never really picks up much momentum. It's interesting to watch, but
doesn't have much impact. Fritz Lang's METROPOLIS, though very dated,
has a lot more staying power and will be around for much longer.

Summary: Nothing like the big screen
Review: I was lucky enough to catch "Metropolis" playing at a theater relatively near me, and I can't recommend seeing this on the big screen enough. The sound of the film and the huge layout of the CGI Metropolis were both breathtaking. The character designs were a bit cartoony for my tastes, kinda like anime versions of the old black-and-white Popeye toons (of course, what else would you expect from the director who brought us "Astro Boy"?), but I quickly got over that. Thankfully, "Metropolis" is being released in theaters in its original Japanese with English subtitles. I shudder to think what kind of dub voices would have been used to go along with the characters' already goofy looks.

The story follows a young detective named Kenichi and his uncle, who travel to the futuristic Metropolis to apprehend a scientist wanted for illegal genetic experiments. Along the way they run into such characters as the robot detective Perro (like a dog), the revolutionary Atlas, the savage and severely unbalanced bouty hunter Rock (who not only shares Mega Man's name but LOOKS like him as well), and a beautiful, enigmatic young girl named Tima.

Despite the ultra cartoonish look of the film, it definetly gets dark, and quite often. Heck, every so often it gets downright morose. But unlike the terminally gloomy feel of movies like "Akira" and "Ghost in the Shell", "Metropolis" maintains a air of friendliness and hope throughout. Think of a Disney movie where you're never exactly sure how many of the characters are going to die before it's over. Or better yet, think of a cyber-punk flick as directed by Miyazaki (of "Princess Mononoke"). Or best of all, stop wasting your time reading my stupid attempts at analogies and go see "Metropolis". You'll be glad you did.

Summary: Quite different, quite good!
Review: I just saw this. I'd almost say "absolutely amazing", but it's not quite. It's not 100%, but I'd give it A+ for sure.

I like the background music, very unique and different and gives it a good feel. This is definitely NOT a children's movie.

I'm not going to say much about the plot, so as not to spoil it so much.
Very nice story line and although it seemed kind of short, plenty of time to get attached to the characters. Well, maybe a bit longer would've been better.

I dunno if I'd buy it for $25 (I'm cheap. Very few movies are worth $25 to me), but this is a "must see" at some point. For sure worth renting it out at the video store.

Summary: "I LOVE THIS FILM"
Review: I love this movie. There hasn't been a truly remarkable Anime movie since "Akira." The 3D animated visuals are state of the art and the acting is good. The animation isn't as graphic as "Akira", but the directing and the music makes it a visual treat. I knew when I heard Katsuhiro Otomo was writing the screenplay, that he wouldn't just write an epic love story, but an epic love story with a hard hitting, slap in the face message.

THE PLOT

The story is about a guy name Duke Red who is a powerful leader with plans to unveil a highly advanced robot named Tima. But Duke Red's violent son Rock distrusts robots, and intends to find and destroy Tima. Lost in the confusing labyrinth beneath Metropolis, Tima is beginning a friendship with the young nephew of a Japanese detective. But when Duke Red separates the two innocents, Tima's life - and the fate of the universe - is dangerously at stake.

The director Rintaro sticks more to the visuals than to the characters but he stays with the plot and it still turns out great. I would like to point out that the Message in Metropolis and A.I. is similar. The message being, don't create robots and don't misuse this kind of intelligence, or we could be killed. And above all this is a sacred story of love.

Metropolis is the new milestone in Anime. It has beauty, power, mystery, and above all... heart. Images from this film will stay with you forever. I recommend this film to anybody.

Summary: Metropolis
Review: A good, well directed, sci-fi story. This is probably the best japanese animated sci-fi movie I have seen since Akira. That is not saying much though I guess, because I am not one to watch a lot of anime. Trying to change that though, and introduce myself more to the genre. I did not much care for the computer animation that was in this movie, nor did I like the character designs, but the hand-drawn animation is excellent, and the story and characters are entertaining and interesting.

Summary: Hardcore film
Review: Metropolis is a film that is quite hard to understand. You have to see it at least twice to understand the geniousity of the film. Every time you watch Metropolis, you'll discover new ways to look at the story, characters, plots... This is a manga that you have to study carefully. Almost all of the movies these days are too obvious: you watch them and you know them. Every dumb*ss can make and understand such films. It just hasn't got the 'finesse' that I appreciate so much in Metropolis. For all the people who are a bit interested in human nature related subjects, it would be a shame if you didn't watch this one. I can be short about the drawback of the film; the special features on both dvds are not that special, but hey, it's the movie that counts.
