The story is one of those types where it leaves you philosiphing from the movie's prespective for ages. It shows the true nature of the human heart and the robotic "soul", free will, destiny, love, liberty, and even the deepest depths of what we call "mind" are called into play into one of the most epic adventures ever. This one is a one for future generations to learn from, so as to know thoughts on unity, peace, and loss.
Also, the character named "Rock" is l-ljp3R <00L (thats "hyper cool" to j00 un-l33t people), in a megaman/protoman-ish sorta way.

Summary: One of the best I've seen
Review: I didn't think I'd like this movie because I wasn't too fond of the way the characters were drawn. I thought they looked a bit Disneyish. But it works in this film. So what do you get when you mix Disney with anime? When it's done right you get an absolutely amazing work of art. The visuals in this movie are unparalleled by any animated movie I've seen. And that includes Sherk and all the other computer animated movies. The art in this movie is just beautiful and will leave your jaw on the floor. The story works almost like a video game. The screen fades in and out like a Final Fantasy game when the disc loads in the Playstation. The story is strong, the characters add to the story and the art...breath taking. I swear. This movie is amazing.

Summary: Possibly the greatest anime flick
Review: I came to this film with very high expectations; the jacket has a plug from no less than James Cameron himself that reads, "Metropolis is a new milestone in Anime. It has beauty, power, mystery, and above all...heart. Images from this movie will stay with you forever."The movie pays tribute and homage to another of my favorite movies, Fritz Lang's Metropolis of 1927, and possibly some other movies like Bladerunner, and it's a fascinating experience to see those kinds of images transformed into a very different but equally dramatic form using anime. Despite my high expectations, I wasn't disappointed. This is probably the greatest anime flick ever, but I would be curious to know how people who have seen both Metropolis and the recent Final Fantasy movie recently would compare them. Although the story in Metropolis is much better--the mystical Gaia theme in Final Fantasy is a little silly--but the level of detail and the realism of the sets and backgrounds in Final Fantasy exceeded, to my mind, what was done in Metropolis. So I'd be interested in hearing what other animation fans thought about this. That having been said, I still think Metropolis is a very visually appealing and even stunning animated movie and well worth seeing, even if you're not into anime or animation in general.

Summary: Metropolis Sets Benchmark
Review: Always a fan of animation, but rarely of Anime, my tastes generally reside on this side of the pond. My friends said it was good, so I picked it up. I was nowhere near prepared for what I saw. Metropolis's visual effects are vivid, lush, detailed--almost beyond description. The images, with a wonderful jazz soundtrack, create an atmosphere that is just this side of tactile. OK, so the story isn't the most amazing I've seen, but it is solidly written. I would recommend that you view it in the Japanese with subtitles--some things get lost in the English translation. I loved it so much--I had to buy it. It now represents the Anime section of my animation collection.

Summary: It has NO redeeming qualities to speak of.
Review: The blend of digital effects blended with, what looked like, cheap 80's drawing was disturbingly bad. The story was heavy-handed and trite. What anime film doesn't have robots, sprawling cities of the future, a love/hate relationship with technology, and obscenely bad social commentary? "Metropolis" is literally the same canned storyline and social statements that made Japanese animation cutting edge in the late 80's. Guess what, the year is 2002. This plotline isn't just tired, it's an anachronism. This movie is a dinosaur that collapses under it's own girth. Good riddance.

Summary: Not worthy to be called anime...
Review: Can I give it ZERO stars? Don't be duped like I was. I had such high expectations for this film, and believe me, I've seen many an anime in my day. But this one, I wouldn't go so far to even call anime. It's an animated mistake. It borrows heavily from the original live action Metropolis film, as well as elements from Blade Runner and other films. The whole robot vs human thing has been mastered wonderfully in such live action masterpieces as the Matrix, or in animes such as Ghost in the Shell, Armitage, & one of my favorite old style animes, Galaxy Express 999. So see one of those if that's what you're after. They're all excellent films. But this one has ugly charisma-less characters that just don't fit, you just don't get attached to them, & you just don't care. You just want the movie to be over. The plot is more mixed up than a basket of wires. And the music is completely silly & doesn't belong at all. Upon hearing the ending song, I wanted the sofa to swallow me up and end it all. The only vaguely interesting character is Tima, the blonde android girl, and watching her evolve and learn about herself. There are images from the film that do stay in your mind, but overall there's that reminder saying, hasn't this been done before, and done much better? Bottom line: If you're into the old-style anime, Leiji Matsumoto's stuff is far superior to this garbage.

Summary: Sleeper
Review: Hi everybody, I've been watching anime for a long time now and there are many that I like a lot such as evangelion, Armitage, and Tank Police. I heard good things about this movie so I went out and rented it right away. I was at first thinking wow this is cool looking because of the CG backgrounds, but then was like wow, they get boring quickly. I first tried to watch this movie but grew tired of it after 20 minutes. I then tried again and fell asleep an hour into the movie. The movie could have been half decent but I didn't like the "story" of it and the imaging got very redundant after a while, it was like playing Final Fantasy and wathcing the cutscenes. I did give this a two star rating ony because it put me to sleep and I have mild insomnia so it was a good help!

Summary: Mindnumbing
Review: After watching this incredible movie I don't know where to start. Very similar in scope and story line to the classic movie Akira, except it deals with more with robots and their future, than with the evolution of humanity. To say there are no parallels between the movies would be laughable because the comparisons are easily seen and made. However, do not let that turn you off of this movie because Metropolis is close to being the best anime ever to reach the American coast. Its brillant color and mixture of retro-"kiddy" character designs and CGI graphics make it an undeniable work of art. The visuals are, to say the least, intense for the eyes. The movie starts at a large banquet in the city of Metropolis. And after seeing the death of a robot out of his zone the movie shows a little of its Blade Runner-like elements. Anyway numerous elements collide, and thought-provoking questions arise mainly about the existence of robots. Eventually the movie culminates in a near destruction of the world by a Tetsuo-like friend/enemy who is a perfectly designed android. The jazzy songs that accompany the movie are appropriate to help create the retro-feel of the movie. It ends on a number of question marks that are obviously ot make the viewer think about not only the future, but about elements of our international society, today. The bottomline is the plot does its job magnificently. And along with the numerous memorable characters the movie is sealed almost perfectly at the seams. Rock was my favorite character, his psychosis, hate of robots, love for his father, and unshakeable determination and sacrifice make him the most memorable of all the wonderful characters in Metropolis. The detective's nephew was another who had intense determination and love for another character even though he was almost killed by that person. Overall every character in their own way helped to strengthen and push the plot line along. Now what else is there to say. The meanings and messages I received from this movie may not be the ones others received, but they were nonetheless poignant. To view this movie you must have an open and critical mind, if you do not then the action may not be enough for you to enjoy the movie. Anyway I would recommend this movie to anyone. (Especially fans of Blade Runner and Akira) Enjoy the eye-candy and I challenge you to try to answer some of the questions Metropolis raises.

Summary: Akira wearing the mask of Astro Boy
Review: This movie is as bad as it can get. I've read some of the comics from Osamu Tezuka. The protagolists of his stories are mostly outcasts. For examples, an android, a werewolf, a vampire, and a surgeon. From my understanding of those comics, an android is neither a human or a machine, a werewolf or a vampire is neither a beast or a human, and a surgeon is neither a god or a man. This is the outcasts who tell the story about how bad the world they live in. I fail to find any of these applied to this movie. The story is focused mostly on the Rock character who seeks revenge from the android. The story itself is not even good. The story is like written by many people on their own, and then someone just cut and paste the pieces together. The ending of Metropolis is the worst part. It is like watching Akira (the comic is good. the movie is so-so.). The ending just doesn't fit anything in Metropolis. After all, this is the worst cartoon I have ever seen.
