Summary: Good buy for Evolution fans
Review: I won't try to talk you into liking Evolution, other reviews have done that.

I'll just say that if you're already an Evolution fan, these DVD's are excellent.

Each DVD has a special features section, and this is why you want to buy them.

There's a director's overview of every episode talking about the decisions they made during the creation, which is cool. It gives you more insight into the show that just makes it all the more enjoyable. Why is Spyke like Marrow? They answer that.

But by far the best are the other features, 1 per DVD. They talk about the art of the X-Men, how they settled on the character's appearences and animation styles and best of all, some face to face interviews with several of the voice actors (including the actors behind Wolverine, Xavier, Shadowcat, Spyke, Rogue and Mystique). They discuss what it's like to work on a show like this, how they were selected for their voice role and how they handle different voicing scenarios.

For the $... Amazon wants I'd say this is a good buy, just for these special features. I hope we see more interviews like these for the next seasons!

Summary: This is a great version of the x-men!
Review: I've seen almost every episode up to date, and i feel that this is a great version of the x-men! Even though some characters are different from the comic versions, I feel that this show does its justice. Even though some characters are not shown to be as powerful as they can be, you have to keep in mind that most of the characters are still in high school. This season is an introduction to all of our favorite characters, as well as others that were not seen in the last cartoon version of the x-men. The last two episodes are great and are a must see. All together, if you are a fan of the x-men, this is a must have!

Summary: This is X-Men
Review: In my opinion, X-Men evolution is a great series. It has all of the loved characters and villians from the original series and I'm sure that there are many more to appear (hopefully Cable and Deadpool). They even made some good changes here. They made certain characters younger which I think is better (I never really liked Cyclops being some 25-35 year old dude) and changed some of the characters' looks better (an exception being the Brotherhood but an improvement is making a character named Spyke based off of Marrow). Most of the original elements are here such as the Morlocks, the Brotherhood, S.H.I.E.L.D, the Sentinels, and Apocalypse. The only things missing, I think, are Banshee, Polaris, the Hellfire Club (they can't say Hell in front of American kids), and Genosha (which is impossible to be seen since the Age of Apocalypse didn't happen yet). Right now (as in October 2003) Apocalypse is starting to be shown as a more major villian which will probably lead to either "Days of Future Past" or "Age of Apocalypse" which is when X-Men became a more interesting series. This is a great show to watch for any true X-Men fan (not just people who watched the moview or watched 4-5 episodes of the 90's series when they were five).

Summary: The series for X-men lovers
Review: Let's face it. The oringinal X-men series is over. Now either we can go watch Spiderman or we can enjoy this show. Spyke is a new character who is Storm's nephew. He's a troublemaker who causes a lot of trouble. Nightcrawler is a joker in this one and Scott is too serious. Rouge after three episodes of wandering around finally joined the X-men. The brotherhood cast was pretty good including Toad, the Blob, Avalanche, and Quiksilver. Mystiche played the principal of there school and she wasn't good about giving the X-men any breaks. This season also brought up the fact of Kurt's past. The season ended with a huge two part battle against Magneto and the X-men. This was a good season and this collection is pretty good.

Summary: An excellent set
Review: Many of the reviews here comment on the poor quality of the animation in this series. While the animation isn't as great as something like "Justice League," it works for the series, and the storylines more than make up for it. I never thought the animation was poor, and it looked like any other superhero cartoon to me.

Although I have never seen the original X-Men cartoon, I don't think it's fair to compare the two. "Evolution" focuses on the origins of the X-Men, and while not entirely true to the comic book, it makes for some great stories. The writing on it is incredible. The characters are very well developed. Over the first 4 or 5 episodes, Scott Summers and Jean Grey's relationship is developed even moreso than in the current X-Men films. This holds true for all the characters, and doesn't limit the amount of action in the series. However the show does focus a bit more on the inter-relationships of the mutants than on the whole "Good Mutant vs. Evil Mutant" concept. And that's what makes the series so great.

As far as the DVD goes, it contains solely the first season, with no extras, which is unfortunate. There's no real enticement for buying this set over simply watching the series (if it's still available in yor area). But if you have missed some episodes or have seen the series out of order, I definately recommend starting here. Unlike many cartoons, this show follows a storyline that makes more sense if you see the episodes in the order they were originally shown.

Summary: X-men...remastered
Review: Now ending its 4th season, I've watched X-men Evolution from the begining and I like it. I enjoy how the characters are different from the tradition. The tradition has been done before and its nice to see change (Not saying the early 90s cartoon was bad, far from it). For those that wonder about Rogue and her flight and strength watch the last episode of season 4. The Prof. gets a glimpse into the future due to Apocalypse and he tells them that he saw his X-men grown which you see(they are wearing the uniforms from the Ultimate X-men Comic)... Colossus is with them and probably Gambit and you see Rogue fly down from off screen (among other things like Jean as Phoenix and Nimrod and the Sentinels).

Summary: A younger dimension of X-men
Review: Over all this DVD is entertaining for X-men fans. However, there are several elements of the comics that bothered me as a fan. The plot lines do not always follow the classic story line of the X-men. Most of them are much younger and still in high school. I thought how Jean and Cyclops were still in high school, yet storm was around 30 years of age was off base, as well as Kitty Pride only being a few years younger than Cyclops and Jean. X-men: Evolution's version of Rogue also bothered me. I always considered her a tough southern belle. This version of Rogue seems to edgey and gothic, making her an outcast and ruining the southern charm I have always loved about her. Also, she does not have her flight and strength abilities. I always thought she aquired them while she was with Mystique, before joining the X-men team. Colossus and Gambit were always two of my favorite characters, and I was bothered by them appearing on Magneto's side and not part of the beloved team. Other than these complaints the episodes are very well done, with not as much of a serious tone as the X-men series of the early 90's that I hands down loved. If you are a big fan of the early 90's series you may be disappointed in some of the character changes but will still enjoy these episodes.

Summary: Revisionist, and excellent
Review: Some of the reviews you'll read claim X-Men: Evolution is horrible and recommend "the original '90's cartoon". So really, what you have to do is form your own opinion because I found "the original '90's cartoon" unwatchable, yet I love Evolution. Here are my quick hits so you know what I'm talking about.
First, I place the phrase "original '90's cartoon" in quotes because it's not the first animated X-Men. I don't know if there was a cartoon done in the '60's when Spider-Man got his treatment or not, but I do remember "Pryde of the X-Men", a pilot episode that didn't turn into anything in the '80's. The story telling, art and animation were FAR superior to the Fox series. The only thing the Fox series had going for it was stories that were very close to the comics continuity, and a pretty cool opening sequence.
Second, X-Men: Evolution has simplified character design lines (but not "simple") that flow, much like Batman: The Animated Series, allowing for better animation and subtle expression. There are occaisional bad frames, sure, there are in ANY animation (Looney Tunes included) but on the whole it looks great. Plus, it's farmed out to Korean animators who do excellent work. Compare early "Simpson's" episodes to later seasons'.
Third, Evolution only uses the comics as very loose guidelines. You don't have to know 30+ years of comic lore to appreciate it and there's certainly know reason to get incensed if they do something different. If you do know all the characters sometimes it's cool just to see what the animators and writers will do with them.
Fourth, the voice acting is excellent, characters are well-defined (maybe even lovable), and it's a very entertaining show!

Personally, I love it, can't get enough of it, and ever since Grant Morrison destroyed the comic versions, and Mark Millar left Ultimate X-Men, it's all I've got left. Hope this helps, and I hope I didn't tick off too many Fox series fans.

Summary: Its alright
Review: The series is alright. The first season was pretty bad but it got better as it went on. Nothing beats the original 90's series but hey that series is over and we need something else to watch. The series is good but could be alot better but it can also be alot worse. So watch at your own risk , you will either hate it or like it.

Summary: This is a terrible Cartoon series. Hands Down.
Review: These shows are so terribly animated. The voice acting is terrible. They sound like contestants from an MTV video. The animation is so cartoonish and so corny looking. They barely blink their eyes and have little facial expression. The writing is non-existent and the direction this show is going has no goal in sight. This is not the X-Men as created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. That can be found with the Live Action Films. Meantime for good animation, I'm going back to Looney Tunes.
