Summary: Simply put, the best animated film of ALL TIME
Review: I first saw this masterpiece at a small theater which was 30 miles from my house. It was well worth the drive. This film keep captivated and kept me interested for the duration. It's no wonder that this smashed box office records in Japan! The animation is spectular, the plot is fantastic, and even the dubbing (which I am usually against) was great! I highly recommed this film to anyone. Don't let the fact that it's animated prevent you from watching it. I just wish that this DVD had a Japanese track (with or without subtitles).

Summary: An All Around Excellent Movie
Review: At the urging of my Japanese roommate who was eager to see the movie in English, I went against my will to see Princess Mononoke. I was pleasantly suprised because I generally don't like anime simply because the way the characters are drawing is not pleasing to me. However, I felt the animation in this movie was top notch, especially the animals. I agree with what everyone has said about the quality of the characters and the story. I think it is an excellent film and I will definately add it to my DVD collection. There were two things I didn't like, however, that I'd just like to point out.Many critics were saying the film was so great because it deals with how humans and technology are destroying nature. Well, that film was already done, and it was called Fern Gully: The Last Rainforest. Sure, Fern Gully was a typical Disneyesque movie and much less mature and sophisticated with animation of a lesser quality, but it was relaying the same ideas as Princess Mononoke (although Princess Mononoke was a much better movie). Second, I was entirely confused by the title of the movie, because I am unfamiliar with all things Japanese. I thought the name of the princess was Mononoke and the whole movie everyone called her San (I think, I saw it a while ago). My roommate explained to me after it was over that Mononoke are the gods that are like giant beasts, so it was like she was Princess of the Beast-Gods. I know that would be a really bad title, but it would leave less confusion for those of us that are entirely uncultured and who would be unfamiliar with a word like "Mononoke". Okay, I'm finished rambling. You need to see this movie because of the music and animation and characters and it's just superb.

Review: This movie captured my attention the moment I heard about it. I saw it and......wow. The story is really great. The only way you could picture this stunning movie is in anime which the director did a great job on.

Summary: WOW! Five stars just isn't enough!
Review: I saw the film in raw, un-subbed Japanese from a copy a friend of mine bought in Japan, where it was already on video. I must say that this is one of the absolute BEST anime that I have ever seen! Truly, five stars just isn't enough to give this masterpiece of Miyazaki's. Truly, he deserves the title, "the 'Walt Disney' of Japanese animation." On a personal note, however, I think Disney did him and his film a great disservice releasing the English version of the feature only in select theatres. Once again, it is a prime example of how animation in this country is never given enough credit. Even though I had to read along with the Japanese dialogue by English translated scripts off of the Internet, I thoroughly and absolutely enjoyed this movie. The visuals and story alone ought to be enough to engross you in its spell, and its non-preachy, semi-environmentalist message should be a delight for those with like minds. Truly, this movie has something for everyone. Another keen difference, however, is the fact that this differs from Miyazaki's others for the maturity of the theme, and the amount of violence it contains, so I strongly suggest that parents be cautioned before getting the notion of buying this movie for their kids. Remember that this is Japanese, not American animation, and that its PG-13 rating isn't for nothing. But all in all, this is one piece of anime the average Otaku (if there is such a thing ^_^) absolutely CANNOT be without. This is one movie that is destined to go down in anime history with such classics as "Akira," and "Ghost in the Shell." I, for one, can't wait until it comes out on video, and am buying both DVD and VHS versions. I give it my highest recommendation! Get it!

Summary: SEE THIS FILM!
Review: Princess Mononoke is one of the best films ever created! Hayao Miyazaki is a master of animation. If you noticed, my title does not refer to it as an anime. A lot of people disregard films because they are animated. When a friend recommended it to me, so did I. I usually go for live action. I was very reluctant to see the film. But by the time I had seen the first two scenes, I was hooked. I was blown away! The sheer haunting beauty of the animation was enough. Added on to the complexity and many dimensions of the wonderful characters, it was enough for me to be blabbing about it 24/7 to my friends. I will not give away too much of the plot for all you unlucky people who have not had the chance to be completely blown away yet, but I will review some of the characters. Lady Eboshi first strikes you as an evil warrior, but she is so much more than that. She does all she does to protect her people. She is a hero and destroyer at the same time. Ashitaka is more than some brash reckless guy who suddenly discovers a hero within himself(the type you usually see in movies), but a complex character who takes his courageous actions as a duty. He doesn't risk his life to save his village because he was born like that. He did it because that was his job. San perfectly portrays the raw passion and fury that Miyazaki imagined. She is torn between her home and her race. A good character representing the forests and the civilization. Most important of all, none of the characters were perfectly bad or perfectly good. Ashitaka is all around good, but he does make mistakes. The beasts of the forests are far from noble, and fight for what they believe in, but do many wrong things along the way. Lady Eboshi may be cruel in some of her actions, but is compassionate and gentle toward her people. NO ONE is good or bad, plain and simple, like you will see in Disney movies. THIS IS NOT A A LITTLE KIDDIE MOVIE! the plot and action is way above second graders. The graphic violence and forcefulness of speech does not suit young children. Unless you are mentally unstable, I KNOW that you will see this heavenly film!

Summary: Truly a Masterpiece of animation
Review: Miyazaki has done it again with this awesome and beautifully animated film. But the most gripping is the storyline. It's such a dream come true to see this title coming on DVD which it deserves to be in. Disney has finally waken up and decided to put it in a medium that maximizes the presentation quality. The dual language tracks is the biggest thing that closes the deal for me to get this DVD. Even though a certain company didn't want it to do too well in the theaters with the limited release, this will certainly make all anime fans happy. The animation was all hand-drawn (over 100,000 frames) but the character cel painting was done with computer techniques provided by a SoftImage paint plug-in and the American voice talent was top calibur. Well, except for Claire Danes. The one thing I would hope for is that the featurette would be longer than planned. It should show something like the making of the film sorta similar to Disney's Tarzan (limited Edition) where it promises to show a bunch of "making of" material--from the original concept drawing, to animation, and to final touches. Then, I would say it would the greatest DVD ever made.

Review: Seeing PRINCESS MONONOKE in the theater was perhaps the best experience at the movies that I have ever had. I can't begin to describe how much I enjoyed this film, but I'm happy that it's finally being released on video and DVD. If MONONOKE wasn't released in your area (which is a great shame and pity for Miramax), then by all means, buy this movie as soon as possible! I know that the people who have already seen it are just as egear as the others to buy it, just like I am. I'm sure that everyone will enojy it as much as I did, even though it may not be in the theater. You'll soon be swept up in the story and wonderful animation. By all means, buy it today! I know you won't regret it.

Summary: A Masterful Achievement in the Art of Animation
Review: So true that anime does not always impress us. In this country we get so wrapped up with our local movie standards, that a full-length animated feature usually receives massive criticism before it's even viewed. Mononoke Hime, or (in this country) Princess Mononoke, is a Japanese film directed by Hayao Miyazaki- one of the most admired and creative producers of animated movies of all time. He is sometimes viewed to be as well known in Japan as Walt Disney is in the US. Mononoke Hime is Miyazaki's final animated film and thought by many, including myself, to be the one of most amazing projects completed by means of animation. The artwork is stunning- a visual reminder to people (even those who don't generally flock to "cartoons") of what effects hand painted cells are capable of achieving-effects that live action movies can not quite reach. The story is compelling and the character development helps it flow smoothly along throughout the movie. It is a tad bit gory in a few scenes, though not in an unrealistic or tasteless manner- one of which that does not fall under the general reputation of violent mainstream Japanese animation. Above all, it is simply a very well done and beautiful film. I have seen it only in Japanese with someone sitting next to me, translating each line as it came. It appealed to me then and ever since; I have hoped to find a version in Japanese with English subtitles. So here's hoping that the advantage of numerous languages in a DVD format will reach this film some day.
