Summary: Plot, Rot and gods - Story fit for a king
Review: The first time i watched this movie, i was slightly impressed, but was busy doing other things at the time. But finally, when i purchased this movie, i realized how awesome it was! The characters are believable, and even some of the "bad-guys" are likable. The plot is absolutely awesome, though any anime fan will tell you - "It's a good anime if you understand the whole thing after the fourth time watching." I give two thumbs up.

Summary: Worth the Wait
Review: Stunning and beautiful, PRINCESS MONONOKE was well worth the wait. Miyazaki combines brilliant art with a spellbinding story--made all the more compelling for not being bound by the standards of expectation and American pop taste that keep Disney films solidly in the "G"-rated category. The best animated film I've seen in many years, and highly recommended.

Summary: Rented this on friend's recomendation and loved it!
Review: I'll keep this brief and just give my impressions because others have already expounded on the important elements of the film. I rented this (and will soon be buying it) movie on a friend's recomendation. He knew I wan't really into anime but convinced me that that I would soon "forget it was an animated film." He was exactly right! My wife and I sat down and within ten minutes we looked at each other and both commented on how we were completely intrigued, the movie had us. I'm happy to say it only got better from there. Deep, rich story, complex characters and beautiful scenery make this one to remember and one to definitely own. You'll love it if you like great movies, even if you're not 'into' animation.

Summary: Nice visuals, but very disappointing story
Review: The visuals and animation technique were up to par for anime -- lots of beautiful and intricate things to look at. However, I was very disappointed with the story and the character development. Most of the time, the action just didn't make sense (unless I'm missing a lot of fairytale background that Japanese kids grow up with), and the characters were so, uh, two-dimensional that I felt uninvolved nearly the whole time I was watching. Perhaps Princess Mononoke got better reviews than it deserved because of the big-name cast and the relative lack of knowledge about anime in the American market. I'd rather have watched Bubblegum Crisis again than this movie.

Summary: A review for those who aren't neccessarily anime fans.
Review: Like all other reviewers, I will start off by saying that you will not be disappointed. The hipe is not exagerated; it is that good.The animation is excellant. The colors are georgious, and the character design is appealing. I further fell in love with the character movements, crossing between realistic and stylized. They definitely prove that some things can't be achieved with live motion filming nor with live actors. This story has to be told in animation format. The best part, however, is the story. The story pacing drives you with great action sequences, but still give you enough room to empathize with the the characters and feel their emotions. The heart of the story lies in the setting of Japanes folk-mythology, giving you environment and creatures that take you beyond your imagination. (The little wood spirits with their rattling heads are my favorites) However, you are still grounded to reality as traces of modernity begins to encroach on these fantasy worlds. You definitely get the sense that this took place in the recent past and has direct link to our existence.

Review: This is one of the "big movies" of Anime. If you have Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Lupin 3, My Neighbor Totoro, or any other of the essentials of an anime collection this will look great next to them. Now if we only had a subtitled version.....

Summary: What's all the excitement about?
Review: I am not particularly a fan of Anime but I am interested in Japanese culture, so I bought this DVD. It's a interesting movie; I kept thinking it is the sort of thing that someday machines will create by combining the plots and elements of various films and stories. If you had a machine that could create animations, and you told it to combine "Bambi" with "Braveheart" and "The Hidden Fortress" it would come out something like Princess Mononoke. It's an interesting story in that there are multiple protagonists; I suppose if the incidental music were not so extremely reminiscent of Braveheart I might have enjoyed it more. It's nice that the DVD has both English and Japanese soundtracks but to be a "keeper" I think a DVD needs a lot more in the way of additional material.

Summary: Brilliant!
Review: That's about all you can say about this film, is that it was brilliant. The characters seemed to have actually lived before you. The film touched on an artistic level, showing the evil and good that lies in man, and displays how it can destroy from within. I would recommend this to my friends who don't even like anime/manga, because it is so good. Not only was the plot amazing and powerful, but the animation was smooth, the characters were drawn beautifully, and the backgrounds were lush and colorful. Then on top of this perfection, the voice overs, unlike in most anime movies, actually add to the power of the film, the characters have emotion and feel so real. If you like anime at all, or even if you don't, do yourself a favor and buy this DVD, it is worth every cent.

Summary: Wonderful piece of filmmaking
Review: Hmmm...I'm disturbed by both some of the negative and the positive reviews on this board. I bought the DVD, without seeing it, simply because Neil Gaiman ("The Sandman" from DC Comics) wrote the English adaptation. I brought it home and watched it with the subtitles and then watched it with the dubbing. Needless to say, the film is what a film should be. Both the English and Japanese voice actors are strong, the direction is terrific and the plot makes sense. If you think anime (not "Japanime" or "Japanimation" - rather insulting terms if you ask me) is all about cyberpunk or action or weird little pocket monsters, for God's sake, please educate yourself. The film works on mutliple levels and in many different ways. If you're not ready or willing to think when you watch something like this then, by all means, go rent "Akira" again (not slamming it, I rather like it) and look at the levels beyond the surface of that film. Then go buy the Marvel/Epic editions of the "Akira" manga and read those. Once you realize the underlying ideas and thoughts running through there you should be ready to take on "Mononoke."

Summary: Vomit inducing
Review: This movie totally grossed me out. It shows giant ugly pigs with boils and pus on their body infecting the hero. Lots of vomit inducing scenes and offensive scenes where people worship the slimy pigs. Don't listen to the hype. Skip this one. For good anime, check out "Ninja Scroll" or "Ghost in the shell". Both include adult and provacative content, but they did not make me puke my lunch.
