Summary: the movie of wonder
Review: In a society where learning and responsibility are viewed as burdens, it is refreshing to encounter a heroine who likes learning, particularly about science. You go, Barbie! Regarding a complaint about Barbie's not getting angry; is this really a bad thing? Instead, she possesses a level of self-control that leads to a healthy and effective approach to problems. This movie presents a positive role model for youngsters (and oldsters) who watch it. Even though the computer imaging is a relatively new experience for me, I find the nuances of many of the moves pretty natural and graceful, and combined with the artwork (scenery, colors), the animation makes a pleasing viewing experience. This non-aggressive video is a positive shift from many of the aggressive characterizations that flood the market and negatively affect those who watch them. My favorite part is the "outtakes" at the end. Let go of literary hoity-toityism and just enjoy this production for what it is meant to be - a lighthearted KIDS fairy tale!

Review: My daughter (5) received this movie (to go along with the previous ones) several months ago, and I've lived with a non-stop soundtrack of the songs running through my head ever since! I find myself singing them as I cook, shop, drive.... My daughter listens to the CD over and over again and knows every word. I generally dislike product-driven children's movies, but I've been so impressed by the Barbie movies. Clearly a lot of effort goes into them, and I like the absence of "edginess" that permeates the Disney movies. I look forward to future movies!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: My daughter hasn't watched any other movie for a month!
Review: Since my 3 year old got this video she has not wanted to watch any of her other movies. She hasn't seemed to have any trouble following the story, and she sings and dances for nearly the entire 85 mintutes. She has so much fun watching this movie, I could not possibly give it less than five stars! (On a side note, I concur with the reviewer who said it is a great disciplinary incentive!)

In response to the "skunk in the garden party" reviewer I'd like to point out that Barbie's dress DOES get dirty - watch the scene where Annelise arrives from the mine. And Barbie DOES do something besides just "marry whom she chooses" - watch the scene where Erika turns down Dominick's request for her to stay and marry him in favor of travelling the world to fulfill her dream of becoming a singer. Given the context, I think these two Barbies portray fine role models for girls - polite, responsible, kind, quick-thinking, intelligent, etc - the kind of women most parents hope their daughters will become.

In the end, this movie is a fairy tale so it is supposed to be a little bit sappy, in my opinion. This movie nicely balances the sap with some catchy musical numbers and a perfect villain. Martin Short as Preminger is superb!

N.B. The story is an *adaptation* of the original story - in other words, it does not try to copy it faithfully. So don't get this movie if you have an exam on the Prince & the Pauper by Twain and don't have time to study. It won't help you. (eyes rolling here)
