Comic Party Dvd 3:Big Time

Review: Well, Kazuki has done it this time. After researching all the hotest trends in doujinshi, he has amalgamated them all into one comic that's sure to sell. He's printed a hundred copies. Now, all he has to do is set up his table at the biggest convention of the year: Comic Party! The problem is that things don't turn out the way he thought. He only sells a few copies, which sends him spiralling into depression and he vows never to make comics again. His friend/wanna-be girlfriend, Mizuki, tries to shake him out of it by inviting him to the beach and showing him lots of fan service but nothing seems to work. It might just take the ever-irrepressible Yuu designating him as a helper at the next comic sale to make him have a change of heart.

When Comic Party tried to get a little dramatic, especially in the 2nd episode on this disk, it kinda fell flat. These characters aren't very complex and developed yet and it's hard to invest any feelings in them. So it felt sorta like soap opera. I mean, this isn't Wagner, so when Kazuki does so badly at Comic Party, what are we supposed to do? Cry? The last episode was back to form and was funny. The best part of the series to me is the rivalry between Yuu and Eimi, with Eimi always saying Yuu looks like a hot spring panda. Hopefully, in the fourth volume, we'll get back to the reasons why the first two volumes were good--humor, love of comics, and not taking itself to seriously.

The extras on the dvd were pretty good. Continuing from 2 there is an interview with the Japanese actresses who played Yuu and Eimi. Well, partly an interview. They're playing against each other in a game called "Black Beard Narrow Escape" which is funny. It also features part 3 of a mini-episode in which the cast finds an underground civilization which just might prove that doujinshi might have been around thousands of years ago. There's the usual art gallery, 3 character bios, etc.

I do think that having 3 episodes per disk is a little skimpy. It seems like they could have 6 episodes on each disk. Well, money makes the world go round.
