Summary: Best anime series ever!
Review: This space anime series has it all. Action, adventure, romance, and humor blend for a more than decent plotline coupled with good animation with a minimal dependance on google eyes and lima bean mouths, plus characters you'll fall in love with, from shoot first and run like hell after Gene and his smart-mouthed sidekick Jim to the crafty mercenary MacDougall brothers, cunning Ron and his psychotic, missile-loving little brother Harry. While the edited and toned down version of the series shown on Cartoon Network's Toonami was good and suitable to show the kids, the only way to really enjoy the humor and innuendo is to get the full, uncut, adult-oriented version. The language is a little steep for under 12ers and there's some nudity as well as a great deal of sexual humor, but it's all part of the story and certainly no more graphic than your average movie rental. Episodes 1-9 cover our introduction to the main characters and their coming together on board the high tech spaceship, the Outlaw Star, the key, along with a beautiful bio-android named Melfina, to finding the legendary Galactic Leyline. Pursuing them are the evil Kei Pirates and the deadly and enigmatic MacDougall brothers. Offering both the original Japanese and dubbed English tracks, as well as subtitles in both languages, you can pick your flavor for viewing this great anime adventure. The DVD also contains an image gallery and the opening and closing themes without credits. It seems to play a bit glitchy on iMac (to get to the options screen, I'd have to play a portion of an episode and then return to the main screen) but does fine in other players. A hassle I'm more than willing to put up with to get my daily fix of Outlaw Star. Let's go!

Summary: One of My Fav!
Review: I really love this series, although I saw the TV version first. I have a complaint about the Editorial review though. The so called edited version they showed on TV wasn't much less than this, only things edited out were the nudity, but this really swore A LOT. And at 12:30 at night they show the ncut dubbed version. I personally suggest taping the series instead, but if you want it on DVD and you don't want to take time out of your life to tape it, then get this, it certainly is worth it.

Summary: Excellent DVD
Review: Bandai is one company that knows what it's doing. Instead of releasing two or three episods on one DVD, they go ahead and release 9 full episodes on a 2 DVD set, for almost half the price. Outlaw Star is the story of Gene Starwind, a gunslinging "outlaw" in a distant future where humanity has expanded life into all corners of the universe. He and Jim Hawking, his young sidekick, are out to just make it big when they run into a mysterious woman who says needs protection until she leaves the planet. Eager to be paid big bucks for such a simple assignment, Gene and Jim jump at the offer, but soon find out that the woman is "Hot Ice" Hilda, a rebel pirate who is running away from the Kai Pirates who are after her and the secret she hides. This secret turns out to be Melfina, a beautiful bioandroid Hilda had been stashing away in cryogenic sleep. Gene and Jim are caught up in more trouble than they can handle as they end up having to escape from their planet, Sentinel III, and head deep into space. These first 9 episodes of Outlaw Star are mainly just there to establish the characters, their personalities, and motivations, as well as the basis of the story... Although there are a few filler episodes here and there.

These DVDs include two language tracks, Japanese and English, and optional English subtitles. Outlaw Star would be one of my favorite anime series for one reason alone: The great voice acting in the original Japanese track. Outlaw Star truly has some of the best acting in any anime series I have ever watched. Every character is brought to life by the excellent acting of the entire cast. Shigeru Shibuya's voice matches Gene's personality perfectly. There couldn't possibly be a better person to cast as Jim than Rika Matsumoto. Aisha is voiced perfectly by Yuko Miyamura, who is quite possibly the best part of the entire show. After listening only once to her portrayal of Aisha, you'll absolutely fall in love with her voice and how it GIVES her character an identity. Then there's Ayako Kawasumi as Melfina, who gives her character a gentle and innocent voice. The list could go on forever. There really isn't anything wrong with the English dub. It's well-casted, as Bandai dubs usually are, it's just that when compared side-by-side with the Japanese track, it suddenly seems very mediocre.

The picture quality of these DVDs is crystal clear, sharp and just plain amazing. The menus are quite average. I never particularly liked Bandai's DVD menus. In my opinion, they're too loud and too flashy. You have to wait for a long animation to complete, and a loud clip of music each time you choose a different menu selection. The extras on these DVDs aren't anything special. You have an image gallery full of character sketches and a non-credit opening theme song. The character sketches are quite nice, but they only occupy about half the screen, with the other half belonging to the over-complicated menu. A full-screen gallery would've been a lot nicer addition.

Despite a few small problems like limited extras and poor menus, the low cost, the fact that you get 9 whole episodes, and the quality of the show itself makes this is one to keep.

Summary: Outlaw Star 0wnz j00.
Review: Outlaw Star is an incredible series of anime, featuring a great combination of technology, action, characters, and plot. It moves smoothly from episode to episode. The action sequences, especially those of the grappler fights, are beyond words to describe them. The technology is believable and still cool enough to inspire awe. The characters are cool under fire, very believable and incredibly humorous. The plot is smooth and still features suprises enough to wntertain the most austere individual. Although some of the episodes don't fit into the whole plot very well, they are still entertaining and many of them are action packed. In short, it's great.

Summary: Slow in the beginning
Review: Outlaw Star, brought her by Bandai Entertainment, contains 9 episodes in this Collection. There are a total of 26 episodes in this series with 3 collections. This collection of 9 episodes seemed to be quite boring. It was basically introducing the characters and what I like to call, 'Filler Episodes.' The characters still continue to be introduced a bit in the second Collection but that is where it starts picking up. The Second Collection has some good episodes setting it up for the end. Better to get the unedited DVD than the ones on Toonami. I prefer the Japanese vocal track over the English Dub in this case. And saying this, I can't wait to get the 3rd Collection. This isn't the best anime or a favorite of mine yet but I'm sure it will prove quite enjoyable.

The animatioon is great, especially the spaceships. The characters are very cool and funny. Another good reason to get this DVD is because it's a better deal than the VHS. Summary: Like Toe Fungus, This One Grows On You
Review: Off the bat I didn't expect much from Outlaw Star. There was barely any press on this series, there were 9 episodes per volume (normally a big red flag) and trailer looked lame. But being the anime fan and impulse buyer that I am (a rotten combination), I picked this up and was pleasantly surprised.

Admittedly, this series breaks no new ground in terms of animation, storytelling or presentation, but by the end of this volume, I was completely hooked. I think it's the combination of likable characters, fantastic mechanical design, overall art direction and sporadic off-color humor that slowly wear down your cynacism and resistance. This is truly Cowboy Bebop's illegitimate love child.

Summary: It's Blade Runner meets Tenchi Muyo!
Review: From what I saw on this DVD, I can tell you that if you are a fan of Cowboy Bebop, you have to see this. It is silly, but it still manages to stay within the story by doing so. Gene is a little less hipper than Spike from Cowboy Bebop (he's a real ladies man). The fight scenes (both in space and on land) are absolutely amazing. The soundtrack is too good. I almost forgot that it was TV show. The content is ok, although a scene where Gene is with Melfina where Gene's manhood cannot be seen might confuse some viewers. Other than that, this show was the best. The extras on disc two include creditless opening and image gallery (actually, it should just be called a full-color conceptual art). Ofcourse, I can't explain the true entertainment of Outlaw Star in words alone. You just have to see it. Or, if you dont like spending money on a DVD, you can just watch it on Cartoon Network's Toonami on January 15. But it will be edited on TV, so get this DVD. There is a lot of stuff they're going to censor. This anime is on a level of Star Wars, Blade Runner, Tenchi and just about any movie you can think of thats in space. However, there is a little glitch in it. When the Dolby advertisment comes up, dont hit the title button. Just fast forward through it. The colors didnt bleed. The characters are all great, although some might think Melfina is being used as a female slave by Gene. I dont wanna give away any of the story cause I did it would be criminal of me to rob you of the full glory Outlaw Star has. So buy the DVD and see just why the hell I cant say enough good things about this show.
