Summary: A Masterpiece
Review: When I first saw the preview I thought, "boy meets alien girl--an rpg-style story full of cliches. Boring." By stroke of luck I got to see a few episodes through the anime club. I thought, "wow, what interesting dialogue, as if I'm watching a sci-fi novel." Then I read more on the internet and realized that this really is based not on manga, but on paperpack science-fiction --the stuff I used to read in middle and high school. Saying that this anime has character development is putting it mildly. I now own the four discs for the first season--too bad there's no word yet on the other seasons and movie compilation. Watching for the first time I was absorbed and couldn't wait to see what would happen next. I could easily watch this over and over again--all the scenes are pure poetry. The orchestra music conveys the epic feeling I've been longing for in anime, and suits the setting, sometimes grand and alive, sometimes giving an eerie bittersweet mood. The story is serious and a little sad, but there are humorous moments that are ingeniously crafted into the script. However, having the Ranma 1/2 cast doing the english dub does not do the characters justice. This is a DVD-only release, so watch it subtitled (the audio is also less muffled that way) I was wondering why I hadn't noticed this title before, but now the fourth volume just came out. Be careful, though, since first pressings of the first volume are still floating around and suffer from severe video problems--I had to return mine to get the second pressing. The remaining three volumes are of the better authoring house.

Summary: Overhyped
Review: When this DVD was referred to me, I was curious...
When I saw it, I saw nothing special, and at times, I saw nothing good...The story revolves around a story that's too common in anime, a plucky, yet somewhat lost hero, and his companion/love interest who is infinitely stronger, but very naive. The story takes forever to unfold, and when it finally does, you wonder if it was worth the trip. To add to it, the soundtrack is horribly out of place, fraught with woodwinds that would have been more applicable to a series with a more organic feel, or sci-fi of the 70's. On the whole, this is a series that is better skipped. There's much more promising titles out there that should have your hard earned money put towards.
