Description:
The six-part OAV Ex-Driver (2000) depicts a future in which AI cars and trucks drive themselves with humans as passive passengers. But occasionally a vehicle goes haywire or someone reprograms a car--then the Ex-Drivers go into action, capturing the errant vehicles in prolonged high-speed chases with lots of skidding turns. The Drivers are high school girls: patient, sensible Lorna and hot-tempered, immature Lisa. When they're joined by half-pint Souichi, Lisa resents his presence and has conniptions. To no one's surprise, the trio bonds during a chase that borrows from Speed. As the basic premise doesn't offer much in the way of story possibilities, the series quickly grows repetitious. It's clearly aimed at pubescent boys, who will enjoy the CG car chases as much as the jiggle shots. (Rated 13 and older, but more appropriate for over 15: brief nudity, profanity, alcohol use, cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon
