Summary: Anime Girls To The Rescue...Sort Of
Review: Mew and Mica are super-powered super heroines charged with the task of protecting the Earth. A mysterious evil is attacking the city with various monsters, much to the dismay of the Dolls.

The story is the basic "super hero beats up the monsters" plot, similar to the Power Puff Girls. The animation is bright and vibrant, and the video quality is actually very good. The dub was also not that bad, though I did prefer the Japanese with subs. The menus worked nice and clean, but there was no extras on the dvd.

I found Hyper Doll to be very funny because of the extreme silliness of it all. The dolls dislike their duties and would rather do just about anything instead of saving the day. The only human who knows their true identity has a tough time, what with the monsters and the Dolls and his fear of water. The dialogue had some cute one-liners and the Japanese actresses had cute voices too. In all the characters are cute and mildly interesting (though they could have been better), but there was an absence of actual plot.

You get dropped right in the thick of things without much background info, but you quickly pick up what info is needed on your own. I wish there was more to the plot, or at least there should have been more of a primer before you watch. This is the only installment to my knowledge, so don't think that you've missed something, because you haven't.

Hyper Doll is good for a laugh so long as you don't take it seriously [the dolls don't ;)]. My only gripe is the relative hap-hazard way the story is told. But being only two OAV's it can be excused as being a video for a good laugh.

Summary: Modern day action girls
Review: Take a couple of girls who happen to be aliens from outer space and can fly and transform into super-heroines and you get the general plot.

The Hyper Dolls have attitude and get into almost more spats with each other dinging each other than with the bad guys who they are there to defend Earth from. Indeed, they can get so wound up in a face-off that they have to be interrupted to do their job; their boss appears usually in the device of some variety of pizza to rein them in.

Their "victim" who knows who they are and cannot tell is a fairly typical boy with a delivery job who sits reading computer magazines in class and is saving for more memory. He get's angry with them when their machinations get him in trouble.

I liked the modern setting; sky scrapers and water them park. Add to that the fireworks festival, and villians who despite being giant insects, jellyfish or earthworms were in their way too human.

Too bad this is the only DVD of the HyperDolls. It starts after the girls have arrived and then ends, when future episodes could cover both ends.

Summary: Good series, weak DVD
Review: There have been many short series in Japan that don't get much respect. Thankfully, it gets sent to video so people can really appreciate them. And now this type of anime finally gets on DVD, but I am afraid that Pioneer put about as much thought into it as the producers did. Mew and Mica are kinda like Sailor Moon (minus the skirts and add the skimpy outfits). They both argue and eat too much. The humor, when compared to Sailor Moon, is a bit dry, but I love watching the battle scenes. Now here is the big let-down about this DVD. The live-action version, which was included on the second subtitled VHS tape, isn't included. And extras are no where to be seen (not much to expect from a 2 episode series). Overall, good series, great price, weak DVD.

Summary: Not much here
Review: These episodes are obviously not to be taken as a serious plot anime, but rather for their comic value. However, the comedy is pretty bland and there isn't enough of it anyway. This series is like Sailor Moon, only with a brief glimpse of breasts during the costume change phase of the heroines.

The low price is deceptive since the DVD contains only the two episodes, choice of English/Japanese language and English subtitles on/off, and nothing else. NOTHING. The animation itself is fairly mediocre. They could have added something to this DVD worthy of watching more than once, but they didn't. Too bad...
