Summary: Ahh, A Plot Emerges...
Review: As I rewatch the original Tenchi Muyo TV series - this time on DVD - I find myself liking it even more than I did the first time. Aside from being generally light and entertaining, the animation for the series is quite light and well done - almost direct-to-video (OAV) quality.

For the fifth (of eight) discs in the series, Tenchi, his family and his friends find themselves suddenly (literally) pulcked from Earth and into space - and a plot. With the series now halfway over, the characters of Tenchi have left behind the character development, the light silliness and the few pieces of foreshadowing presented in discs one through four in favor of a political mystery on Ayeka and Sasami's homeworld, a a galactic game of cat-and-mouse and, oh yes, some serious silliness.

While I enjoyed the four discs before this one, it was nice to actually feel that there is a driving plot and direction in the series. The mood in this disc does stay relatively light, but it foreshadows the increased drama of the future episodes.

In terms of the quality of the DVD release itself, I am continually glad that Pioneer included the episodes uncut for the DVD release - with full openings and endings for each episode (something they did not do for the VHS release). The digital extras are minimal - line art and character data - but welcome in the sense that anything was given to a disc this late in the series is nice. The finger puppets that come with the early pressings of each disc are adorable and have become a point of curiousity for me as I work my way through the discs wondering who the next group of "super-deformed" Tenchi characters made into finger-puppet form will be.

If you're working your way through the series, definitely get this disc. If you want to start watching Tenchi in its original form but find the earlier, plot-light episodes a bit too much to handle, this might be a better place to start again. Either way, it's a DVD worth getting.

Summary: In volume 5 things get more....complex.
Review: First Kiyone's request for a transfer has been approved and she has been promoted and has been assigned to HQ. While this is going on Ayeka, Sasami and Ryoko are arrested by Jurai military. Ayeka and Sasami were arrested for high treason and Ryoko was arrested because the Jurai realized she was a wanted space pirate. With help from Mihoshi and Kiyone, Tenchi and the rest of the gang are able to rescue the girls, with help from Ryo-Ohki who basicly turns into a spaceship while still INSIDE The Jurai warship. Just think about the repair bills!
It seems the new Emperor, Yosho, has been approved by the Jurai Planetary Council. Yosho happens to be the name of a noble prince who was thought to have died many years ago after REFUSING the throne. Why would he come back?
Back at Police HQ, both Mihoshi and Kiyone get in trouble when Mihoshi overhears a Jurai agent plotting with a Galaxy Police Official. It seems Ayeka is to be turned over to the Emperor the second the police find her. Mihoshi, in fact, helps save Kiyone from capture as only Mihoshi can! They end up joining the rest of the fugitives.
In the last episode of the DVD we find the gang low on spaceship fuel and they don't dare go to a gas station. So the gang goes to a heavily populated planet where they can mix in with the crowds. There the girls end up getting jobs as hostesses and dish washers while the male folk get jobs at the same bar as bartenders, doormen and so on. They end up blowing up the bar and being chased by police, only to escape because Nagi refuses to let anybody catch Ryoko but herself. In other words she fires on the police!
Now the gang are terrorists and they still don't know what's going on!

Summary: Cool series
Review: INTRODUCTION:
Although the Tenchi Muyo anime series became a massive hit in its native Japan and other neighboring nations, it was never fortunate enough to gain that kind of success in the United States. That's a real shame, because this is one of the best anime series out there. It DID air briefly in America on the Cartoon Network, but it never really won the audiences over the way series like Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z did. But this series is every bit as good as the animes that DID achieve fame in America. Read on for my review of this set.

BASIC PLOT:
It's hard to describe this series because there are so many twists and turns in the plot, but I'll try my best. The story follows a young man named Tenchi Masaki, who has just returned to school from a long break. Soon enough, he meets up with a rather strange cast of characters, and discovers that he may be the last hope for saving the universe! To make things even more difficult for him, many of these strange characters he has met fall in love with him, and this creates some competition amongst them that results in some rather comical scenes.

SERIES OPINIONS:
Why is this series so underrated in America? This is one of the best animes out there. It combines the samurai-style action of Dragon Ball Z with the romance/slapstick humor stylings of Sailor Moon, and this creates a series that is universally appealing. And believe me, over time this series will grow on you.

THE DUB:
Surprisingly, the dub version of this series isn't that bad. A few scenes have been mistranslated or toned down for American audiences, but it's nothing major like with other animes. Here's a little tip, if you're curious about what has been changed - while you're watching the Japanese subtitled version of the DVD, hit the Audio button on your DVD remote and switch to the dub track. This way you can watch the English dub with the English subtitles for the Japanese version - there's no better way to see how different some of the translations are!

DVD:
Once again, DVDs featuring an uncut dub and an uncut sub have been released. This is great because you get both versions of the series. There are also some bonus features as well. There aren't a whole lot of bonuses, but at least there are some - a number of anime DVDs don't have any at all!

OVERALL:
Overall this is an excellent DVD set, and it's good to have all the episodes of this classic series on DVD at long last. Still, the DVDs could have been done a little better. If you're an anime fan, this is a strongly recommended release.

Summary: Spaceward ho!
Review: Tenchi and company head into outer space in this fifth DVD installment of the Tenchi Universe series, which has aired on Cartoon Network.

Humor and hilarity abound as the Tenchi cast take to the spacelanes in an effort to figure out why everyone from the Jurai military to the Galaxy Police is after them. Fans of Tenchi will not be disappointed, as poor, put-upon Tenchi finds himself on the run, not only from unwanted female attention, but also from the law!

This is a definite must-have for all Tenchi fans. I give it five stars out of five...it's humor, action, and romance, all in the finest Tenchi tradition.

Summary: No Need for Space
Review: This 5th volume of the Tenchi Universe starts out normal enough. But, a Jurai spaceship comes and takes Tenchi's house and all of his friends from outer space. It seems Aekya, Sasami and Ryoko were all arrested by the orders of Yosho, the new ruler of Jurai. Tenchi, Washu, Tenchi's grandfather saves Aekya, Sasami and Ryoko from the Jurai battleship.
Soon, everyone is most wanted by the Gaxaly Police, even Kiyone and Mioshi. Tenchi's grandfather suggested that they all go to Jurai and find out what's happening there. So, the entire group is heading for Jurai. Things are getting Interesting.

Well... it all starts of with Ayeka being arrested by the planet Jurai and Ryoko, the most wanted criminal in the galaxy and poor Sasami... all captured by Jurai! How will they escape? Well, it has a great conclusion and is very exciting! I can't wait to see what happens next!
