Summary: Although possiblly sterotypical- My Anime FAVORITE!
Review: I am an anime lover so I may be a *little* partial- but I'd rather watch this than almost every "normal" movie out there. It takes your standard Dungeons and Dragons world and takes it to the extreme. To me- it is the best of the D&D worlds of anime. It creates a wonderfull world of characters and dives deep into them. A mystical, magical place is shoved into war- not any war- but THE war of lodoss. at first it seems to be a small part of the world but soon encompases everything around it. A MUST see. I'm glad I can finnaly purchase it and look forward to the TV series.

Summary: finest D&D anime I have seen
Review: Lodoss War is one of my first anime DVD, and as far as I can tell, there is simply no other D&D anime out there (not yet) that compaires to its presentation quality and style. Excellent plot/story line, very strong character development, dubbing isn't bad, animation and sound quality are excellent. It's the type of movie I like to re-watch once in a while. An even better news is that the REAL sequel to Lodoss War is coming on 4xDVD in October (not that phony sleeper Legend of Crystania), and is 2x the running time. Since I have no complaints on Lodoss War, I am certain to buy the sequel as well. I'm glad I bought this.

Summary: A Solid Anime, Well-Worth the Viewing!
Review: "Lodoss War" has unfortunately suffered some criticism as being a stereotypical fantasy story or anime that loses its luster as the series progresses. All critics, however, are quick to point out that the anime is still a good, solid one, and worth watching. The reason for this agreement is that the series is a truly worthwhile and enjoyable experience.I definitely agree that Lodoss War should be recommended to all who are interested in good fantasy anime. However, I don't think the series's downfalls are as severe as some would point out. The story does follow a more or less typical fantasy archetype, to be sure, but it also adds enough variety to keep things interesting. The writers were definitely influenced by the Tolkien-esque RPG world, and even admitted in interviews that they attempted to keep that feeling inherent throughout, which they did. You'll feel right in the middle of an exerpt from the Lord of the Rings or some similar plotline. There are dwarves (who dislike elves) and elves (who avoid dwarves), goblins, kobolds, humans, wizards, and priests. But any fans of good fantasy or role-playing stories will appreciate what Lodoss War attempts--a story of a world torn by war--a land where the forces of good and evil must be balanced to ensure survival. And the sense of omnipotent observers and tremendous powers moving behind the scenes add to the epic feel. But there is enough inner growth and soul-searching among the characters (such as Parn) to give Lodoss War a greater depth. It's true that the story sometimes feels too big to be contained within only a dozen odd episodes. But that's because it is. Anime usually does not live up to the breadth and scope of its manga roots, and Lodoss War is no exception. Hence, it cannot focus on all aspects of the story (such as the Beserker and his strange powers, which are only used once in the entire anime). But despite these holes and outliers, the story remains whole and rewarding. The animation is solid, with something of an antiquated feel. I don't really believe that it deteriorates terribly with time, but it's true that some enemies at the end seem to lose the edge that existed at the series's beginning. Yet the animation is not what ties Lodoss War together. Instead, it is bound by its unforgetable characters and strong yet simple quest storyline. That is what redeems this series and gives it value, and that is why I recommend it to everyone. I promise you that you won't forget Parn or Deed or Fahn, or any of the other robust characters in the show. Some of their appearances might be small, but they'll leave their marks. It's definitely not as terrifically and psychologically deep as a series like "Escaflowne" might be, but then "Lodoss War" wasn't trying to achieve the same thing. Try it out--I assure you that you won't be disappointed, and you'll enjoy speculating about the open-ended plotlines that the show leaves with you.

Summary: Starts on Pole Position...Finishes in top ten?
Review: Having seen most of the VHS tapes of this series, I noticed something which was hinted at in many of the other critiques. The first tape (episode...?) is incredible. Awesome animation, and excellent story line (albeit stereotypical), and it grabs you in...like the fun beginnings of lets say...a Dragon Lance novel...the collective of fate-drawn friends sets out on epic journey. This epic journy begins to falter along the way (artists got tired?) but the animation slowly deteriorates, and I couldn't get myself to watch the last couple episodes. Maybe they rebound, but I have yet to find out. But as a whole, for the price, this series is worth it. If it were any more expensive..hell no! If you have the cash, this is a great "used tape" (the kind you see at blockbuster, and buy previously viewed...a movie you would never buy full price...). Some of the episodes are fantastic...just don't expect a solid performance throughout.

Review: If you like sword and sorcery type of stories this is a must buy for you. The characters are strong, and develop into even better detail over time. The story is face paced and exciting, but never loses you. I recomend this to long time Anime fans, or for a first time vewier.

Summary: Great fantasy anime!
Review: The Age of Gods was closing. Eternity had come to an end. The heavens shook as the armies of Falis, God of Light, clashed with those of Falaris, God of Darkness. In the unceasing battle which followed, the earth wept... The seas boiled... At last, only two survivors remained of both sides. Marfa, Goddess of Creation, and Kardis, Goddess of Destruction, who met in a clash which echoed to the ends of the earth. At the end of the fierce battle, a new land was born, split off from the continent, and the life's fires of the goddesses of Light and Dark flickered and died away. Thousands of years have since passed. And now, the land to the south of the continent of Alecrast has become known as "Lodoss - The Accursed Island." I was expecting quite a bit out of Lodoss war. I was very dissapointed. Some of the reviews that I read said that "Record of Lodoss War" is a wonderful anime with majestic characters,involving plot, and eye catching animation. Unfortunatly, some of this is untrue. The animation was very detailed, very much so in the first couple episodes. The frame rates were excellent,and the character designs were superb. I was somewhat dissapointed with the battles, however.From one review,It was said that the legthly battle sequences were some of the best. Not so. The majority of the battles may have lasted a while,But fast paced they are not. The only battle that had my puse racing was the berserker battle. Other than that, I found that many battles consisted of excessive camera panning, which started happening more and more as the series progressed. I also witnessed the overuse of certain images. It sort of gave me a feeling of Deja vu. As the series progressed,the animation started to lose detail. In fact,I found some of the monsters in volumn 6 to be Hokey,and very poor. The characters may have been this animes saving grace. You'll fall in love with them. Despite Parns constant frusteration and how ignorant he was of Deedlits attraction toward him until it was to late, He still came off to be a likeable guy. Deedlit herelf was a good character. Deedlit had a certain mysterious quality about her, and also was sesitive. The bad guys too, are well done. These are the kind of guys you'll love to hate. I found the plot to be masterful, with lots of cool twists and turns. I did find it to be a entertaining fantasy,But the weak ending droned on and on. The final verdict is if you like fantasy anime, epic quests, or are a fan of "RG Veda", or "the Vision Of Escaflown", or love elven vixens dressed in revealing outfits, I'm sure you'll love this. I know I did.

Review: Welcome to the realm of Lodoss where the record of Lodoss War resides. Lodoss is an accursed island born with the scent of death and war. An ancient evil is about to awaken and terrorized the islands once again since the battle of the gods ended millenium ago. A group of six people will have to face their destiny and repeat what the ancient heroes did before, to seal this evil once again. From the island of Marmo rised the evil king to challenge for the ownership of Lodoss encouraged by a witch whose identity is unknown to all but the sage of Lodoss. Of the party of six is Parn, an aspiring young knight who must regain the honor of his father. Deedlit, a joyful and playful elven girl who controls the forces of nature. Slaynn, the ever powerful sorcerer of Parn's vilage. Ghim, the dwarf who must search for his lost Lairyla. Etoh, the best friend of Parn taught the teaching of a priest of Fall. Woodchuck, the good natured thief . Thus the defense of Lodoss have begun. Will Parn and his party survived and discover the secret of Lodoss? Only a seer who's one of the ancients can guide them. This anime is enjoyable with a dungeon and dragon type storyline. However, due to the inclusion of Deedlit, a kawaii elf girl and Pirotess, a voluptuos dark elf woman, the anime soared to high popularity. Till now, these 2 characters are still the most desired females in anime.

Review: Despite the slightly wanting animation, this is definitely one you want to buy. From fantasy-obsessed fan to someone looking for a story with an amazing plot, this is great. The characters are very deep and engaging. It's really great to watch them grow and change as the story progresses. A good choice for anyone!

Review: This was a great anime. The animation was a little choppy, but the plot and character developement more than made up for it. It was much better than I expected. A friend whose taste runs toward "Angelcop" and other violent trashy anime recommended it. Instead of the disgusting plotless waste of time I was expecting, I got a surprisingly deep, touching story that'll be great for any fantasy-lover. The mythology is great. The characters are multi-dimensional and realistic. I purely loved it. I highly recommend this wonderful experience.
