Review: "Plastic Little" is a fairly poorly acted direct to video "anime" with a story that runs for about half an hour. Maybe I enjoyed some of the goofy action scenes, but the story is so saccharine that it's insulting. The fact that this film's intended appeal more or less hinges on being physically attracted to animated characters does provide some scenes that are in a sense funny, but trust me; they are soooo stupid! The only thing that would make "Plastic Little" funny is if the studio decided to make a sequel. People would laugh all the way home from the video store after renting some decent animation!

Review: *
"Plastic Little" is one of those anime features which is confusing and hard to follow not because there is too much to keep track of, but precisely the opposite! I first became aware of this title as a result of clicking through the preview trailers on one of my other titles. And despite all of the obvious 'titilation' I knew would be encountered in this OAV, the action scenes were of such adrenaline-raising excitement that images of "Akira" danced endlessly in my head. My main concern was how could they possibly (or plausibly) squeeze so much into a less-than 60 minute one-volume story? Answer: When there is barely any story there to speak of. "Plastic Little's" biggest problem (apart from its ambiguous, indecipherable title) is that it tries to cram way too much story into far too limited space... (imagine trying to squeeze a 'D-Sized' bust into a 'C-Sized' brassiere and you'll have a fairly good understanding). "Little" allows an insufficient time frame for any significant character development, that much is already a given ... but the rushed story also leaves a lot unexplained. For instance, just hoodahek is this "Gweezle" guy, where did he come from, and what's up with that shower curtain always covering him & the oversized new-age chrome bicycle-space helmet he's always wearing? What exactly is the "Sea of Clouds"? How and why did Tita's father die (if he ever did), and how did the crew members allow the orphaned 17-year-old girl to assume the rank as their "captain"? "Plastic Little" needed AT LEAST an additional half-hour in order to address some if not most of these and other questions. The artwork and animation are impressive, to say the least, which help supply this story with a certain amount of credibility it so severely lacks otherwise, and which pushes it just past the "Two-Star" rating I likely would have given it. One of my most vocal gripes, however, comes with regard to the vocal segments of the anime: The voice acting-- both Eigo AND Nihongo --is just plain horrible! And that infamous "jiggle counter" feature on the DVD was a needless and senseless addition -- but I suppose when you can't produce anything on a level of brilliance such as "Mononoke Hime" or "Akira," you resort to frequent breast exposure. Overall, "Plastic Little" is an impressive visual experience, despite my general dissatisfaction with it. If visual experience has a certain appeal, you could easily do a lot worse -- but if you're looking for something with a bit more substance in the form of a coherent story with reasonably decent acting, try looking elsewhere. * * *

Review: Animation and drawings. 5 stars. Impressive. Sound. 3 stars. Good but not outstanding. It won't be the next Star Wars hit. Story. 1 star. Too fast. No drama. Emotionless. Except for topless it is not quite interesting. Surprising solutions came from nowhere. Relationship between two main characters (both female) seem like an affair, not like a friendship. Feeling. Just for rent. Perhaps it may worth the time due to drawings. But if you spend money... There are better things you may buy: Superdimensional fortress Macross, Sol Bianca, Bubblegum crisis chapter 1 to 4, Wings of Honneamise. If you see this movie on the shelves, leave it there and warn your friends.

On the other hand it has LOTS of nudity, explosions and techno-babble to please most male viewers. And the non-sexual relationship (or skinship as Patrick Drazen might call it) between Tita and Elysse could be enjoyed by female viewers.
It has ONLY 50 minutes so not a lot in character or plot development. Think of it as a short film or a extra-long episode. Extras include jiggle counter, sketches and storyboards.

Summary: Ok but not worth the money
Review: Definitely a renter, if only to see the animation. Satoshi Urushihara really has a talent for animating people. If someone had really cared about this movie (OVA), its wonderful animation wouldn't have been wasted. The plot is OK, but would have been better if it had been allowed to develop. If you like this kind of animation, buy the manga. Urushihara is really a manga artist. His best mangas are Chirality, Plastic Little (that one is MUCH better), and Lemnear.

Summary: I purchased the movie and...
Review: Good news first, then bad news. Later some comments. The good news is that the animation is VERY impressive, the drawings have a VERY charmy style. The bad news is that the story is senseless and lack of emotion, despite of a good music. Many things are not concluded. Characters are plain, even Captain Tita. Solutions to get out from trouble are not realistic. Think about sort of "Captain Luke Skywalker" wearing a thin latex Tatooine suit that is bullet proof and outfitted with Batman's equipment, whose ship is like a heavily shielded Millenium Falcon that is used to capture animals for a zoo and it is capable to wipe out an entire armada of Star Destroyers. This Super Luke faces Darth Vader and the young man suddenly takes a blaster from nowhere and blow his enemy's face from the universe without allowing a challenge that demonstrates the power of the dark knight. Unbelievable, huh? Watch this movie and see how similar the story is. Now the comments. This movie is a good excuse to see animated topless (bumping breasts). Topless are not necessary and they do not have an artistic sense. The relationship between Tita and Elysse (both are 16-17 year old girls) seems more like a romance than a friendship. There is a boy of the crew who just like Tita and he comes to a dead end with her, it seems that there could be something but that issue was unfinished unexplained and unexploited. The action is too fast, moving from a place to another. I think they tried to pack so much action and nudity that they forgot the story. Think about this "movie" as a demo of related animations that last 50 minutes. If you want to purchase, go on warned. I regret it.

Review: Good things first. This is easily one of the most breath-takingly, beautifully illustrated and animated anime out there, EVER. The intricately hand-drawn and shaded character designs are beyond compare, and the frame rates are so silky smooth that probably only CG-3D stuff or Disney or Miyazaki stuff are more smoothly animated. By that virtue alone, Plastic Little easily belongs on every anime fan's must-watch list. Now for the bad. If there ever was an award for an "all glitter and zero substance" anime, well, Plastic Little would easily win. The story is quite laughable in its cliches and pathetic lack of logic. Characters are annoyingly one-dimensional and have no depth whatsoever to speak of. Worst of all, the storyline is disappointingly anti-climactic. It should be criminal for an anime with such a rare striking beauty to be strapped to a storyline so unrewarding. In all fairness, Plastic Little suffers the most from its own brevity. It barely clocks in at 45 minutes, and that's including the ending credit roll. If this was more of a full-length feature (say, 80-90 minutes), then there would have been a good deal of time to flesh out the characters and their relationships, and to elaborate on the futuristic society and its technology. Heck, even with its current short length, the creators could have squeezed some of that into the storyline and have it make a lot more sense. Instead, the creators chose to spend the time with numerous scenes where the female characters are seen either nude or topless, taking bath or being bandaged. Granted, they are probably some of the most beautifully drawn breasts in all of anime, but I say that one such bath scene is enough for a 45-minute anime. I'd gladly trade a couple of the topless bouncy-breast scenes for a better developed plot. To sum it up, in terms of sheer beauty of the animation, Plastic Little belongs in the top 10% of all animations ever made worldwide. In terms of intelligent, engaging, INTERESTING storyline, this one is near the bottom of the heap. A total, utter shame.

Review: Granted, this movie seems to center around a young, lovely, ship captain, with an unfortunate name, (Tita) who seems to enjoy losing her clothes, but it is a fun way to spend an hour (not that way!) If only to enjoy the lush animation. (the animators seem to be VERY proficient at bouncing... body parts) The title seems to be about the "actors" in this fun flick from the land of the rising sun. Other recomendations: Anime-Outlanders, Tenchi Muyo, Manga-Plastic Little, Bakuretsu Hunter, Music-They Might Be Giants, Panime: Best of best
