Summary: "The Best Anime Series Of All Time"
Review: Prepare to be addicted! You've been warned. This really is the ultimate Anime. Wonderful humour, detailed art, huge mecha action, beautiful girls, and the dubbed voices are excellent. Akito Tenkawa, a fry cook turned unlikley pilot, must help the battleship Nadesico and her quirky crew defend the Earth from the evil Jovian invanders. It's so funny to watch Yurika Misamuru, the 20-year-old captain of the most effective weapon in Earth's aresenal, go from bubbly love-struck airhead to brilliant tactician in a moment's notice. Don't let the serious-looking box art fool you, this is a relatively light-hearted anime. I mean, the main character spends most of the battles in a cooking apron. You can't go wrong with this series! A MUST BUY! Enjoy!

Ciao, Greg

"I'm not a pilot, I'm a damned cook!" -Akito

Summary: Nadesico is Fabulous Anime, a Great Mecha-Comedy Story!
Review: Nadesico is a fantastic mecha/sci-fi/comedy story with a little bit of tragedy. You could almost say it's Evangelion meets Ranma meets Gundam Wing. It takes the best out of those series and turns it into this great anime! The animation is very nice, especially for a TV series. The color is very nice, especially. The characters are very good, however *pauses* my favorite character, Yamada-san....well, that's a semi-spoiler. Even the most minor characters get a little depth, although...What can I say? They are minor characters, after all. The music is very good-the opening is excellent, and the ending is good, and the BGM's didn't particulary stand out but were well suited and very pleasing to the ear. Overall, Nadesico is a great parody with some seriousness that will leave you in awe of this awesome anime series.

Now, ADV markets this as "Japan's most popular anime series", however, I tend to doubt this. However, I don't live in Japan either, so...It's certainly good enough to be the most popular series! The packaging was pretty nice, and the DVD was pretty nice, no problems with sound. The subtitles were a little large, in one part they use a smaller subtitle, however, that was only for that certain situation. The extras are nice, I thought the idea of translation notes was a nice extra, because that's something you only usually find on fansubs. The character bios were a little on the corny side, but overall the extras were pretty nice. The setup was nice, I little to no difficulty moving around. The DVD and the extras were good, overall. Now, if only ADV would include a picture gallery or interviews with the seiyuu...

Nadesico is one of the best anime TV series avaliable, and definitely worth the money. I suggest watching the subbed version, the dub was alright but not great. It truly deserves 5 stars. The characters are good, the animation is great, the comedy is excellent, the music is well-suited and nice-you simply can't go wrong with this title!

Summary: Mildly Amusing At Best
Review: * At the beginning of MARTIAN SUCCESSOR NADESICO, the evil Jovian
Lizards invade Mars and wipe out the human colony on the planet. Now
the Lizards press their attacks on Earth -- and Earth is forced to
rely on their last hope of salvation, the space battleship NADESICO,
built by Nergal Corporation and manned by a civilian crew.

The crew is a gang of eccentrics and misfits. The captain is Yurika,
a young lady who combines the tactical skills of a military genius
with the personality of a dippy romantic teenager. She has eyes for
Akito, who really wants to be a cook but always ends up dragooned into
becoming an ace mecha pilot. Yurika keeps insisting that Akito is mad
about her, managing to twist everything he says or does -- even when
he threatens to kill her -- into this fantasy.

That captures the tone of MARTIAN SUCCESSOR NADESICO: it's a
slapstick parody of mecha anime series such as SPACE BATTLESHIP
YAMATO, MACROSS, and GUNDAM. I had initially been reluctant to try
the series out, since anime humor tends to be weak more often than
not, but I rented MARTIAN SUCCESSOR NADESICO THE MOVIE and found it
nicely produced, though it suffered from an incomprehensible plot (if
there was actually a plot there). Reviewers suggested the series was
much better scripted than the movie and quite funny, so I decided to
check it out.

Actually, what I found after going through the four episodes on this
DVD was that the series had production values much closer to the norm
for anime, and though the plot could actually be followed ... well,
it's not all that funny, the style being: "Everyone acts like idiots
and runs around a lot." I would rank its scripting as about
comparable to the old Hanna-Barbara cartoons -- OK, maybe a bit
better, though the Hanna-Barbara stuff did have its moments -- but
certainly not in the same league as the old Jay Ward-Bill Scott stuff
or Looney Tunes. I might have chuckled here and there but I
never laughed out loud.

MARTIAN SUCCESSOR NADESICO seems to have been targeted at a
junior-high audience who really likes anime and is familiar with the
gimmicks of anime series. I think it would work very well with that
audience. I don't think it's of much interest to older audiences, and
it would certainly be of no interest to somebody who wasn't an anime
fan. Possibly the later volumes work better, but after going through
this one I am not all that inclined to find out.

Summary: Wonderfully Daffy
Review: This is one whacked-out ship of fools! The first tape in this 12-tape series wastes no time in moving ahead with it's seemingly trite plot and over-the top humor. The Nadesico is a spaceship that has been built to fight the Jovian lizards, a race of beings from Jupiter bent on destroying earth. The crew features a ditzy captain fresh out of officer training, a cowardly cook who doubles as a pilot, a penny-pinching accountant, a genetically altered 11-year old, two crazed mech pilots (One is an anime addict, the other wants to be a cook), and a host of others.
The series proceeds quickly and loudly through it's initial episodes, which focus on Nadesico's personnel quirks and it's fight to be kept out of military use. Some of the goofier scenes had me laughing out loud! Yeah, most of this has been done before, but this series strikes a great balance between action, comedy, and romance. I highly recommend this series. It will tickle your funny bone and keep you at the edge of your seat at the same time!

Summary: Not bad at all
Review: I bought this anime on a hunch but it turned out to be alright. The characters (especially Gai Daigoji) are painfully goofy at times and the dialouge and jokes aren't really side splitters but it certainly has it's moments. The story is pretty good because it is not your typical invaders-are-coming-and-we-have-to-stop-them kind of story, the crew of the Nadesico are also tring to rescue colonists on Mars. The mecha designs for the Aestivalis were pretty cool too and the battle scenes were well done. A lot of other fans agree that it is cool that the characters also watch an anime called Gekiganger 3 that parodies those giant robot shows from the 70's. I personally enjoy the series and can't wait to see more. If you like giant robots, wierd humor, and an interesting story than this is the anime for you.

Summary: A laugh a minute
Review: Take one state-of-the-art battle spaceship. Throw together a crew of a pilot who wants to be a cook, a voice actor, a penny pinching accountant, a high strung anime fan, a genetically engineered 12-year old girl, and a few other loonies, and this is what you get. And make no doubt about it, this show is hilarious.
The action is fast, loud, and even sometimes confusing as no one ever seems to shut up on this show (Except for Ruri, who makes an occasional observation of 'Idiots!'. This is what Star Trek would be like if the replicator would make coffee using Jolt Cola instead of water.
This first tape contains three episodes, and all three are very funny. In later volumes, the action slows a bit, and both the characters and the story grow at a more comfortable pace, albeit amidst some hilarity. But this first tape will definitely whet your appetite for more. I currently have the first eight volumes and hope to be getting the last few pretty soon.

Summary: Not what I expected!!
Review: (This review is based on the first DVD of the Martian Successor Nadesico series: Invasion Vol. 1)

Well, I'll start this review off which a comment that I saw in another review, in that you'll either love this show, or hate it. It seems I am going to be the minority voice here and say that I do not like Martian Successor Nadesico. Read on if you wish to hear this voice of opposition.

I am a HUGE fan of Giant-Robot (supermecha) anime. When I saw a preview of this show, It looked really exciting! There was no hint of the absolutely horrendous goofiness that this show is all about! So when I bought and watched this DVD I felt somewhat betrayed. I admit, most giant-robo anime is very serious, and making a series that is humor-based really is a great idea (yet too much humor becomes a bad thing, especially if it's lame!) But in any giant-robo anime, the robots themselves MUST be the main character, NOT the goofiness!! What I hated most about this show is that the presence of these mechas (which, granted, are really well designed) seem like an afterthought, a small token of reward for sitting through the lame humor. There's no real emphasis on the robots themselves, like how they operate or the kind of systems running inside, or even basically where they even came from! They're just there; and at some point in an episode, a hero just jumps inside of one, cruises it out and defeats an enemy, and then it's back to the goofiness, unless of course the goofiness continued during the robot scene. Anime such as Geo-Armor, Detonator Orgun, and Patlabor were ABOUT giant robots! This just seems to be about frenetic goofiness: a comedy that tries w-a-a-a-a-y to hard to be funny, and, oh yea, it has some mechas loosely thrown in at the end of each episode. When it comes to comedy in a giant-robo anime, I even enjoyed Sailor Victory more than this, but the superb "Dai-Guard" wears the crown for best giant-robo "comedy", since that show tends to take itself seriously at times!

Other gripes I had with this Anime are that these jokes and "humorous" situations come at you at such a furiosly frenetic pace (no joking about that either!) the uninitiated, or slow reader may be forced to listen to the god-awful english dub! (*shudders* the screaming, oh-no the screaming!) Also this show suffers from some trippy character designs, esp. the main female character ...! And the characters themselves are really flakey! The only one I wound up liking is the computer girl with the grayish hair! (Sorry, I didn't care to remember the names.) She seems to be the only serious character in the whole show, thinking everyone else is lame! But of course she herself develops some quirky behaviors later in the series.

This show does have a bright spot! As you may have been reading in other reviews, yes, the "spoof within a spoof" show that the crew seems to enjoy, "Gekigengar" is a delightful throwback to the old, "all-important" supermecha shows of the 70's and 80's; and the characters' reactions to this program (especially Gai) are genuine and realistic in a way that you actually start to see yourself in those reactions! Nice touch, there!

Ok here comes the bottom line: =================================================================

Bottom line is that the 100mph (or should I say 100jph) pace for the mostly lame humor is a definite turnoff. The character designs can be wierd at times. The mechas are well-done, but seem like a hurried afterthought, taking a back seat to the main star of the show: the lame humor, and then the overcrowded odd assortment of lame characters.

Simply and honestly, there isn't enough here for us giant-robo anime hunters! This show is basically for the mainstream, cutesy-tutesy, all-too-funny, Slayers, Gokudo, Lost Universe anime fan. If you're hunting for some new, really good giant-robot anime, I'll have you check out Dai-Guard! See my review there! --SuperMECHA!

Summary: Great finish to a Great show
Review: What amazes me with this show is very high continuity in quality and story. Despite an admittedly weak story and a precept of spoofing nearly every genre of Anime, it manages it all believably and never descends in the sort of silliness some satire-shows present.
I enjoyed the story (even if some plot twists aren't exactly of shakespearean quality) and the fun.
As I said, the quality is very high; I noticed only one or two scenes (mostly the attack on the Satsuki Midori 2 outpost, where the mecha designs are VERY basic) where it lapses.

Really, I can recommend this series to anyone who enjoys action, comedy and a bit of romance.

Go Gekigangar!
