Summary: The labyrinth inside the story
Review: "alright, you've got me convinced it's a good movie..but what's it about???" you ask.. Lots of symbols / surreal imaging! The story is set in a different world, a different time almost fantasy-like, with surreal images (floating chalkboards in school and weird lands), where ghosts can exist and roses bloom at night. The setting is like Final Fantasy PSX game series. It starts w/ Utena in tomboyish short hair being introduced in school by Wakaba. There she meets the other characters (Juri, Miki, Saionji..etc.). Unintentionally, she fights Saionji for the rose bride (Anthy -- who is incredibly sexy in the movie, and totally NOT INNOCENT as in the tv eps. versions). Utena wins, thus Anthy stay w/ her. during their intimate relationship, they share a bond of love and of secrets, with darkness and evil undermining other character's world. There are frequent flashbacks of Anthy killing herself, of the "Ends of the World," a person controlling the future of what's to come, and of awakening. The movie also has a relationship with Touga and Utena as deep lovers, once loved but lost. Later on, Utena turns into a car and there is an action-packed racing scene. Again, there are symbols everywhere. In the end, Utena and Anthy break from the "world" and reach enlightenment...they "cracked out of the world's shell."

Summary: This movie is a must have for anime fans!
Review: .... The storyline is very psychological and complex. If you haven't seen the series, you may be lost, but even if you did, it can be very mind boggling with mystery, intrigue, and some taboo themes. Utena and Anthy have a closer relationship than in the TV series, and the director even comments on the things he wanted in this movie. There's a lot of extra stuff too, but the movie is the best. They did a pretty good job at the English dub too, and I'm picky about that. Crispin Freeman as Touga, grr..., did awesom, so did Rachel Lilis. You must see. You must see. Once you do, you'll want to soundtrack too, because visuals aren't the only cool thing about this movie, the music is awesome too.

Summary: The best of YURI
Review: If you search sf/vampires/ space opera - go wrong.
But you can't hit better if you look for romance (between girls
of course) , and fantastic music.

Great movie for fans in every age !

Summary: a great flick to keep you up at night
Review: The movie overall is great and intense. However if you sit down and analize it, you will start to see some SERIOUS symbolism in this film. If you like a movie that will keep you thinking about some serious stuff for a LONG time, get this anime...you don't even have to be an utena fan to begin to attempt to understand the philosophy of this film.

Summary: Wonderful!
Review: I adore this movie... The story is very surreal, and if you're into that kind of mind-tripping fantasy thing, more than likely you will enjoy this movie. Not everything makes sense the first time you watch it, and if you're afraid of symbolism, you might as well avoid Utena altogether, because the movie (just like the series) is full of symbolism. Almost nothing can be taken literally. Other than that, the animation is gorgeous, and the music is wonderful. Simply stunning.

Summary: Not worth it
Review: The movie is OK, but it's really not worth it. I have to admit that I was *very* depressed after watching the movie, it just isn't that good. If you haven't seen episodes 14-39, spend your money on some fansubs fof 14-39 instead of the movie. In my opinion, the Black Rose arc and the Akio arc are far better than anything found in the movie. Also, I don't quite care for how the characters are changed in the movie. And let's face it, the remix of the theme song just ruins it.

Also, what's up with dropping the title? In Japanese, the title is Adolescence Revolution... too risque for the American market? :-)

Summary: BEST story, BEST drawings, BEST songs, = Utena!
Review: REVOLUTIONARY GIRL UTENA is simply a marvelous masterpiece in the Anime World. The storyline is fantastic, and the drawings (including the songs) are pumping with action and vitality. The story of Utena is quite dark, yet so passionately romantic and filled with action...like a fairy tale. That is the series in general. This movie should be RATED R. There are nudity and violence, as well as "hints" of lesbian sexuality (kissing, hugging, touching,etc.). However, this is not some stuck-up sex-crazed anime, but the story is so deep, complicated, dark, and so awe-striking that it seems very NATURAL to see those things (nudity and violence). It may sound crazy, but if you SEE IT, you'll BELIEVE IT. This anime has been OFFICIALLY RATED A+ out of all other anime series, racing ahead of Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Ranma, Slayers, Tenchi Muyo, and other anime series (which are rated A- or to B-) in Japan. FANTASTIC. This movie is definitely worth its money and more!

Summary: Toki Ni Ai Wa
Review: I first saw this video on fansub rented from a local anime store. Having only seen the first 13 episodes of the Revolutionary Girl Utena TV series, i was eager for more Utena, in any form. What i saw took my breath away. This movie was beautifully animated, with lavish design, and an Escher-esqe setting. The pinnicle of my enjoyment seening Utena and Anthy dancing while the song Toki ni ai Wa played in the background. This is truly one of the best anime films you will ever see. I highly reccomend, no demand you to see this movie.

Summary: A Masterpiece
Review: Simply said, this movie is just damn good. It's got everything that any Utena fan.. even anime fan, could want. I have seen this movie before many times and recommend it to anyone and everyone. The animation is beautiful along with the music and story. Kunihiko Ikuhara has brought us another masterpiece. The power of Dios that sleeps within me commands you to order this DVD. A MASTERPIECE

Summary: Weirdness to the max
Review: This is a rare treat, usually anime is delayed for months, but this time the release date was bumped to a month early. I fell out of my seat when I discovered this movie was actually coming over here. Utena is the most surreal anime movie I've ever seen. This movie is loosely based on the TV series. Be warned this movie is definitely NOT FOR CHILDREN!! As in the TV series Utena attends Ohitori Acadamy and accidently gets caught up in the fencing duels for Anthy, the Rose Bride. However, the relationship between Anthy and Utena is much more questionable. If you haven't seen the TV series, especially the end, you will be very lost and confused. The background of the movie is very beautiful, but it makes no sense since the buildings and blackboards randomly float in space. One thing I hated about the movie was the fact that Utena had REALLY short hair so she looked like a guy--except when she was fighting a duel. Miraculusly, her hair becomes long again during the battle scenes. To give you an idea how random the movie is, there's a part where Utena randomly turns into a CAR! Don't ask. "Utena the Movie" is the kind of movie to watch if you're suffering a major case of writer's block, or when you're drugged in a hospital. If you love surreal and confusing movies or anime in general, this movie is definitely for you.
