Review: This series has got to be the best anime I've ever watched, better than Akira, better than Ghost in the Shell. Although you need a lot of patience to watch this series you'll love it when it's all said and done. I would definetly recommend this to anyone that has a love for storytelling. But be warned it's extremely boring and takes forever to take off and make sense and when it does it sends you back into confusion, the artwork is very different, the characters in certain scenes are very simplistic but the backgrounds are compelling and very complex. The music (which there is few of) is very depressing especially the opening theme which would be the perfect song to commit suicide to. But after finishing up the series I was sad to see it end and felt mixed emotions on "where" Lain (the character) ended up and she might just be the cutest (brand new baby kinda cute) character in anime history. This series is definetly not meant for the younger crowd.

Summary: Great Series
Review: This whole series is wonderful. It has great animation, wonderful sound and a story you can think about for weeks trying to figure out. I place this series up with Ghost in the Shell as my all time favorite anime. I recomend the DVD version, but vhs is ok if thats all you have...oh yeah, each volume comes with a sticker sheet! This is a must have if you like deep stories about the significance of life and the like.

Review: Though not being an experienced Manga viewer I was attracted to Lain by the reviews it got on the Amazon site. And I was not disappointed: the first 4 episodes took of slow but kept my attention right to the end.What I found remarkable in the design of the series is that Lain is not showing much of its Japanese origin. This shows up the most in the more grown-up characters who look more European than Asian. The animation is quite simple for major parts - Just panning and zooming. But the tension of the story and remains, showing the quality of the sheer story line. From a more psychological/filosophical point of view the buildup is strong, situations and characters are recognisable. Questions about identity, reality and man-machine relationships arise at in very intriguing way. This series is not everyones buisiness though- my roommate ran out after viewing it for 5 minutes. But I would recommend it strongly for people with an open mind for X-files/Anime/Cyberpunk stuff.

Review: When I first saw this series I really did not know what to expect, so I approaced it with an open mind. A deliberately slow pace is set forward from the first layer, Weird (which also aptly describes the entire series), and viewing this series requires a lot of patience and lowered expectations. In the end I doubt you will be disappointed. The interludes where the recurring theme of power-lines with the constant hum add to the intruigue, and allow the viewer time to ponder what is really happening in the story. It is also refreshing to see some anime devoid of the gratuitious violence and sexual content that is so common of the MTV generation. The dark subject matter is not intended for children as there are themes of suicide, conspiracy and plain-old distortion of reality. Viewing the mix of reviews, I have come to the conclusion that it is unfair to compare other well known epics like Akira, Robotech, DBZ, or even Star Blazers to this one as this story is more fragmented and mind-bending. Definitely mind-candy though, if you approach without the expectation of a typical hero based storyline.

Summary: Slow beginning, but this volume picks up quickly.
Review: With with Layer:11 almost all clips from the previous ten layers, I was sort of wary of watching the rest of the DVD. But in tradition, Lain surprised me with two and half layers of first-rate story telling. Like LAIN: DEUS, the story is X-Files style but highly original and creative. The animation here come close to the gripping marvel AKIRA in its most intense scenes. Watching the finale of LAIN would make anyone want to watch the entire series over again to fill in the gaps they experienced the first time they watched it. Highly recommended anime masterpiece! If you like The X-Files you are bound to like Lain: Navi, Knights, Deus, and Reset. Enjoy!

Review: Wonderful. I love the conclusion of the Lain series; it wouldnt have been better, had I made it up myself:) I love anime that makes my brain excersize while it is being entertained, and this is the highest quality out there.
