Summary: The movie is short, but the story of outstanding!
Review: Even though I'm no longer subscribing to Nintendo Power anymore, I found that this movie is better than the first 3 films. The story goes like this:

At the start of the movie, it displays Pokémon: The First Movie in letterbox mode. Following that, Giovanni's first objective is to bring back Mewtwo by using the 2 robots to create a force field, where Mewtwo cannot escape. One is red, the other is blue.

When the main title screen appears, then fades away, our heroes finally reach Mount Kana, the Johto region where Mewtwo lives. Once it started to rain, Brock pulls out the frying pan to cover his head while the heroes try to reach the bus. Will they ever reach the bus?

After tripping over, Luna says that it's too dangerous to go up Mount Kana in such severe weather. Suddenly, the bus begins to spin off the ground, because Mewtwo doesn't want to be seen by Giovanni, the deadliest opponent in the Pokémon universe. Meanwhile, Luna told our heroes to go inside to discover the dangers of Mount Kana, when suddenly, Team Rocket jumps into the scene to steal Pikachu using the electronic rod, so Pikachu can't shock them. How ridiculous! But, the Meowth balloon contains 1 rocket on each side of the Meowth balloon. As soon as they blast off, the balloon was about to lose control, so Ash Ketchum lost Pikachu. They had to get the ropes to climb up Mount Kana, but Luna knows the way.

Next, the balloon begins to crash into our heroes. As soon as they got on the balloon, Domino reveals her true identity. It was 009. Then, Domino began to fall off the balloon, pull out the black rose, and throw it toward the balloon for some hilarious havoc! Ahh!

Later in the movie, Team Rocket was sent to jail, so when Meowth was going away, Team Rocket calls him a traitor. Then, the 2 clones of Pikachu want to battle, but Mewtwo thinks that battling is senseless. However, every time the cloned Meowth tries to say something, he makes me laugh all the time.

Suddenly, the Team Rocket balloons are about to take away Mewtwo, so Ash and the gang have to transform the log into a canoe by using Bulbasaur and Chikorita to do the work. As they head toward Mount Kana, they encounter the Team Rocket balloons, hoping not to be seen. Once they got there, the scientist who discovers water thinks that water is essential to life.

As our heroes head back down, they were encountered by Team Rocket, so Team Rocket sends both our heroes and Mewtwo's clones to prison. Suddenly, a Butterfree swarm is approaching, so the Pokémon clones were saying that a whole flock of Butterfree are coming, even if our heroes can't understand Pokémon language. Once the Butterfree unleash their Sleep Powder attack, one of the Team Rocket grunts was holding the torch, so when the torch began to fall to the ground, a massive explosion occurs and the prison door has opened up.

Once our heroes are going back down Mount Kana, they encounter Giovanni, who is ready to take Mewtwo away. He thinks that Psychic powers can compete with humans, but not machines. As soon as Mewtwo got into the force field, Mewtwo is about to die! Can Ash and the gang rescue Mewtwo from the evil clutches of Giovanni? You'll have to watch the movie to find out.

The Pikachu balloon part of this movie is great, and the dialogue is uncut (Ages 6+).

Also note that there is no such thing as Pokémon 4: The Movie, Celebi: A Timeless Encounter. And as the Pokémon phenomenon goes down in flames, the legend will never die!

Wait! Something's happening! Pokemon 4, Pokemon 5 (Which is also known as Water City of God: Latios and Latias), and Raikou and the Legend of Thunder are coming to the U.S.A. Good luck!

To be continued...

Summary: Not your usual cute Pokemon movie!
Review: Those of you who've read thru my review pages and then hit this may be confused...but yes, Pokemon (both the anime and the game) is one of my guilty pleasures.

However, I don't feel the least bit guilty over owning a copy of this! It's not like the previous ones, and certainly not like the TV anime. It's a very dark ride through parts of the Pokemon world that've only been hinted at in places, or have appeared only in certain manga versions. There are a lot of deep philosophical points here, hence a lot of talking and not so much action. But that's not a bad thing, given what's being ruminated over...namely, Mewtwo's fractured relationship with the world he now has to live in.

But to make things even more fractured, along comes Team Rocket. No, not the twits with the bad hair from the anime, but the REAL Team Rocket, being just as horrible as anyone who's read the "Pokemon Adventures" manga will know, led by Giovanni...and this is the first time we've really had to deal with Giovanni on any major basis, come to think of it. What results is Giovanni's attempt to reclaim his 'property'...namely Mewtwo himself...and a battle of wills between him and Mewtwo as to who and what will prevail.

For little kids, I'd have to say that this would be a rough ride. There are parts that will possibly traumatize young children due to their intensity. But for everyone else...and ESPECIALLY anyone who's hoped that the anime would turn in a deeper direction...this is what you've been waiting for. And even moreso, this comes to the US shores with what appears to have been minimal tampering by 4Kids, unlike past movies.

A few glitches, though...there are a couple of points where the origin of this 'movie' as a TV special do show as some odd editing screwiness. And the scripting, also likely due to this, exhibits some odd discontinuities. But these things are more technical points; they don't really detract from what's here. So I'll actually give the film 4 1/2 stars due to the glitches...but give that 1/2 back due to the fact that the DVD also contains...yep...the missing 9 or so minutes that're the REAL intro to "Mewtwo Strikes Back", the footage that changes the entire context of that movie, making this movie make a whole lot more sense.

So...less action, more depth, loads of philosophical stuff slung around, really nasty Team Rocket, very likeable and sympathetic Mewtwo...yeah, this is something that anyone into Pokemon will definitely want. Just keep in mind...it's gonna be _really different_!

Summary: 4Kids does it again!
Review: I bought this movie on the 1st day of sale, yesterday as of the time I'm writing this. I wanted to be the 1st to get the new card inside. To my dissapointment, it didn't have a card. But the video made up for it.
The movie doesn't have a mini-movie, a card, or a preview for Celebi: A Timeless Encounter. In fact, the movie is only 63 minutes long and doesn't have any songs(with vocals). But what a movie. 4Kids has done a marvelous job with the other 3 and now they do it again. The script was wonderful, the best so far for any of the Pokemon movies. The animation is good, while not as good as the other movies, it is better than the TV show. The animation does not include any CGI except for the very end, when Mewtwo emits the light after rising from the lake, and this time the CGI blends in better than ever. The plot is very well established, with lots of action and a good moral value. The music score is made up of tunes from the previous movies, the TV show, and then a very good new score for the movie. I highly recomend this movie to all Poke'mon fans, because this is a great movie. Plus, if you want to keep Poke'mon alive, you have to keep buying the movies.
All in all, this movie is lacking in features but makes up for it in the movie itself. I recomend the DVD because of the music video, the trailers, and the Uncut Story of Mewtwo's Origin. SO WHY ARE YOU READING THIS!! BUY IT, YOU WON'T BE DISSAPOINTED!

Summary: Review of 'Myuutsuu! Ware wa kokoni ari!' or Mewtwo Returns!
Review: I hate those stupid names the companies give their videos, eeek! O.o I like the Japanese names MUCH better! Anyways, this video would be an great item to add to you wish list this year of 2001 since over here it's almost Christmas time! *grins* I am a twelve year old, of course I am hyper! I added this video to my wish list for sure! What's also different besides the names is that this was just a special episode in Japan, not a movie! At least I don't think so... I love this movie! Buy it! ^.~

Summary: Over 60 minutes+Mewtwo= Awesome movie!
Review: You know, although I have to admit that I hate 4Kids Entertainment lots of times (editing and cutting out scenes! How rude!) I really have to thank them for dubbing this movie! I have been waiting since, oh say "Mewtwo Strikes Back" for another movie appearance with Giovanni! No, I'm not crazy.. Although I don't think I am.. Now back to the movie.
As we all know, Mewtwo escapes with Mew to another place from "MSB." Happy ending? I think not! Now Giovanni, being the big and bad boss of Team Rocket, wants Mewtwo back.
I don't think that it was just me but does Mewtwo sound different? Oh well! For every Poké-fan, Giovanni-fan (me!!!), Mewtwo-fan, and any other fan, this movie is a definite must get!

Summary: Interesting Idea, but it really would scare little kids.
Review: I have a Japanese copy of this move, so I can't say much about what's said, but Giovanni is seeking to reclaim Mewtwo for some reason. I don't want to spoil the movie for people, but this movie could really scare kids 7+under due to some scenes where it appears Mewtwo is being tortured by Giovanni, nothing graphic, but it probably would upset some kids. It was an interesting movie that really shows off Team Rockets Gadjets to the fullest. It also introduces a rocket named Domino, who, for those who have seen Sakura Wars, is very much like Sumire, some Professor guy, some green-haired girl with glasses, and a few others. Any Pokemaniac, Giovanni fan, and/or Mewtwo fan will appreciate this movie. there may be an ad for Pokemon 4 on this tape, which was something seemingly missing from Pokemon 3.

Summary: Myuutsuu Ware Wa Koko no Ari – Mewtwo Returns!
Review: A word of warning – this review is based on the original Japanese version, ‘Myuutsuu Ware Wa Koko no Ari’, and not on the 4Kids’ dub. If the US version is cut, don’t blame me.

I always hoped that there would be a sequel to the first Pokémon movie, even if it was only to give 4Kids a chance to redeem themselves from their slapdash work. Thankfully, there *is* going to be a sequel, but whether or not the US dub is going to be any good or not is another matter.

When I first saw the original Japanese version of this film in July, I thought that it had a somewhat dark side to it, in comparison to the normal Pokémon theme of happy endings and smiling faces. Almost from the word go, we are faced with Mewtwo’s somewhat troubling emotional problems, and I spent most of the hour wondering when he’d finally blow a fuse (...). Just like in the upcoming 4th Pokémon movie (called ‘Celebea – A Timeless Encounter’ in Japan), ‘Mewtwo Returns’ deals with some heavy material in the plot, with some scenes of violence and suffering previously unseen to US Pokémon fans.

The basic plot is that Giovanni (I’ll use the US names to avoid confusion) gets wind of the location of Mewtwo’s new home, secreted on an island hiding in what looks like a hollowed out mountain in the film. Giovanni blackmails Mewtwo into going with him by threatening to hurt the other cloned Pokémon living on the island with Mewtwo, and Ash and Co. do their best to prevent this from happening. I don’t want to give away too much about the ending, so if you want to find out, buy the DVD!

Despite the departure from normal Pokémon style, ‘Mewtwo Returns’ does not disappoint. We still have the now standard bad jokes and mandatory scenes of group laughter, usually at Team Rocket. Once again, we get to see the Pokémon world through Mewtwo’s eyes – a radically different view from what we’re used to. The seemingly eternal struggle between Mewtwo’s conscience and his violent feelings makes for an interesting subplot, and this is what makes me keep coming back to this film and wondering about it.

This film is certainly one for any Pokémon fan’s DVD/video library, and I truly hope that it is not spoiled by the 4Kids dub.
