Summary: Ignore the nay-sayers
Review: ...both of them. Score is 41-2 and counting...

Sometimes Anime takes itself waay too seriously. *cough* *cough* Gundam *cough* Other times it's way too goofy. Outlaw Star provides a pretty darn good balance between the two and it works well. There's humor a plenty in this series, but behind it all are some of the great plot twists that make similar series like Cowboy Bebop great as well. A few examples:

* Beautiful Assassin (which is on this disc) - Gene Starwind unwillingly becomes a friend's bodyguard against hired assassin Twilight Suzuka. When he defeats her in battle, she promises him that she will carry out her contract to kill his friend. Gene says that she can't kill his friend until she kills him first. And so begins a beautiful friendship...

* Cats and Girls and Spaceships (on the 3rd disc in the series) - Young Jim Hawking finally falls in love. I'm not gonna spoil this one...suffice to say it's as poignant and simply beautiful as anything the Bebop crew ever put out. When I saw this episode, I was convinced that this was the best anime saga I'd ever seen.

Here's to hoping they'll do a second series...

Summary: A safe buy for those new to anime
Review: As most people do, I started my anime career by watching the ever-popular Dragonball Z. After I realized that that show no longer did it for me. I began to search for something with a little more depth and originality. I was lucky enough to come across an anime such as this one.

Many people in America may have a problem relating to anime's that have a great deal of japanese culture woven into the story, but I have found that the storyline focuses more on a healthy portion of action, character development, and of course...humor! Don't miss out on this high quality, fast paced anime.

Summary: The most awesome space adventure ever!
Review: Being a space freak myself, this anime captures a magnificent setting of unique planetary worlds, and the most awesome galactic battles with pirates, aliens, and assassins. Gene Starwind and his younger partner Jim come across a beautiful but dangerous outlaw named Hot Ice Hilda. Stealing the most technologically advanced ship in the galaxy, he meets the lovely and not to mention naked, android Melfina. Gene then begins his quest journing in space as an outlaw searching for the mysterious Galactic Leyline and the true meaning of Melfina's existance. Along his quest he encounters some intresting women, Suzuka the beautiful assassin, and a ctarl ctarl warrior Aisha. Being persued by pirates the outlaw crew digs deeper and deeper into information of the treasures hidden in the Galactic Leyline. The outlaw star ship; XGP15A-11, is also a mystery all on its own. Its operated with the navagator Melfina who is naked all the time. Its unusal but cool that shes naked and conects with the ships system. The character designs and story line are awesome. I absolutely love this anime. Gene Starwind really brings out and together the story in Outlaw Star. Hes an outlaw who loves to drink and spend "quality time with women" not to mention hes one hell of a fighter with his unique and deadly caster gun (a gun that has a mixture of science and sorcery). I really enjoyed the journeys throughout the galaxy, the humor from the the characters, their self discoveries and basically the entire story line. Overall this anime is not intended for little kids because of its content. But for those of you interested it contains action, danger, humor, mystery, and despair. So if you like all or any of these, this is the anime for you.

Summary: Deep storytelling mixed with great comedy!
Review: Compare this series all you want to "Cowboy Beebop," it is still better in many ways. The characters in Outlaw Star are deep and interesting, making you almost want to root them on out loud. Melfina, a bio-android, is such a great character because she doesn't know why she was created. She desperately wants to be human, but knows that is impossible...or is it? Aisha Clan Clan is a hilarious character, so full of pride and yet almost bumbling at times. The character play between Gene and Jim is a crack up sometimes, due to the almost brother like relationship they have. And Suzuka is an almost Taoist character, reminiscent of Kurasawa characters. Add to this a talking spaceship, an embattled McDougal Brothers and scores of Kei Pirates and assorted characters and you've got a series that just cries for another adventure to made soon. Do yourself a favor and just get it. Don't be an anime freak and try and compare it to other series like you are an expert on the subject who is bored with todays efforts. Enjoy it for what it is...FUN!

Summary: A classic 'Anime-series !
Review: I didn't really find an interest to the OLS-series at first, but after seeing it on Toonami, I thought it was a pretty good start !(although the Toonami version was edited for content !)

This is one of the best I have seen yet, along with ''DBZ'' and the ''Tenchi Muyo'' series . It has an excellent set of characters, not to mention the intense non-stop action !!! OLS is the timeless and unforgettable anime' about 2-buds: Gene Starwind and Jim Hawking .

''Starwind-and-Hawking'' is the company that they own, and I believe that they are repairmen or something like that . Gene is caught-up in a conspiracy about a legendary space-ship known as: the ''OUTLAW STAR''(a.k.a. XG-P) . A vicious group called the 'kay pirates are out to retrieve the deadly craft to discover the secrets to the Galactic-Leyline, a mysterious dimensional-like world that can grant wishes .

By twist-of-fate, Gene and young Jim have no choice but to retreive the ''OUTLAW STAR'' and unlock its many secrets . Melfina, a bio-android aids them along the way due to that she can navigate the ship .

Later, they meet new allies, which include: Suzuka, a sword wielding samarai and Aisha Clan-Clan a Catarl-Catarl . They all decide to unlock the secrets to the Leyline before the pirates do and escape a troublemaking-bunch known as the Mcdougal Bros. who also want the spacecraft under their possession !

What secrets do the mysteries of the Leyline hold ? and who will triumph ? This series also has a nice soundtrack to it and beautifully-set backgrounds ! Its a little bit like a crossover between ''Star Wars'' and ''The Matrix'' which makes this an excellent anime-series !

Summary: Loved it
Review: I purchased this because I love Outlaw Star and I wanted to see all the things they cut out from the episodes on Cartoon Network. If you like outlaw star and have some cash to spare then you should get this one as well as the other DVDs in the series.

Summary: An Anime for All "Star Wars" Lovers
Review: On New Year's Eve I was watching Cartoon Network and saw the first previews of Outlaw Star. The animation and the overall look of the show hooked me from the start. Then I watched it and I was blown away. Gene Starwind's character essentially made me think of the series as "Star Wars: The Han Solo Adventures." Seriously, though, the story and characters are compelling, from the confused Melfina, the goofy Aisha, the calm Sazuka, and the conniving Gene and Jim. What's greatest about the DVD is the ability to watch the series subtitled. Even greater is the DVD comes in 2-disk sets, which makes it cost a bit more, but you get more from the get-go, and more episodes come out at once. My only complaint is a constant translation problem with the subtitles. Jim commonly refers to Gene as "aneki" in the Japanese. The word means "big brother," but the subtitles always say "Gene." I guess they were afraid people would think that Jim and Gene were brothers if they literally translated it, but wouldn't the fact that they have different last names make up for it? Oh, well, we can't all be perfect. This video is definately a great buy!

Summary: One of the best
Review: Outlaw Star truly is one of THE BEST anime series I have seen. You gotta love a kid who is always telling a 20 year old to grow the hell up. Outlaw Star does not only have a great story line, but it has characters that you just have to love. Gene being the "shoot at them, the run like hell so you dont get your ass burned", Jim being a smart mouthed genius, Melfina being a quiet mystery, Suzuka being just quiet and aisha being, well, rather funny and annoying at the same time. And then you have the killer McDougall brothers with Ron and his little pyshycopathic missle loving, obsessed with saying die, brother Harry.

Personally, I never liked Bandai's menu screens because the are too flashy, but I can deal with that. The first 9 episodes (The ones featuerd on the 2 disk DVD) are basically charachter introductions and there and showing the personallity of the characters. Thought I have not seen it on DVD, Outlaw Star is one of the only series that is exiting all the way through, from begining to end.

Summary: Good Animation, Very Good Story, Great Value.
Review: So you're Joe schlub anime fan (like me), you see Outlaw Star on Toonami, and you think "hey, this is pretty good." Why should you buy these discs?

Well, in my case, I missed 1 1/2 episodes while taping, and I had a general suspicion that some of the plot holes were due to editing for US TV. I really liked the characters, so I bit the bullet and ponied up for the 3-volume set.

Was this a wise move? After finishing them, I vote yes.

I won't reveal story info, but I'll say the series as a whole is definitely interesting. There is an Indiana Jones-esque treasure hunting feel mixed with a slick, sci-fi universe and engaging character interaction.

I would guess there is about thirty seconds of extra footage in 10 or 15 episodes of the 26 episode arc. Mostly it seems to have been cut out because it displayed sexual relationships or seedy sex-related locales. I suppose it makes sense to cut this for the 12-under set, but none of it was very ribald at all. Language was also edited. Also cut from the CN airing of the show was an episode "Hot Springs Planet Tenrei," due to about three or four minutes of frontal female nudity and about 15 minutes of action revolving around frontal female nudity :). Having watched both "versions" of the show, I would definitely say the uncut show is the better, with a tad more cohesiveness and a fair amount more of characterization and color. However, you don't miss a whole ton of story by watching the edited shows.

Sights and sounds are pumped up and very good. Pipe it through a Surround sound receiver (the discs are in stereo, but a good receiver will create virtual channes for near 5.1 sound) and crank up the volume. Outlaw Star is a show with good sound effects and good music. Watch it loud! A note on voice acting: I really liked the english dub. I found it hard to get into the japanese audio track, as some of the voices didn't seem to fit as well as the english. Picture quality is nearly flawless, only a few pixellation spots.

The extras are pretty sparse, but it's not some great travesty. At about 2 hours per disc, 2 discs per set there's enough value to forgive minor flaws like this.

There are one or two nagging questions I have, mostly regarding character backstory (how did Gene and Jim meet? What the heck was up with Harry M.? He seemed to lack credible motivation...). Also, the conclusion left a number of dangling threads which hopefully will be picked up in a new installment (after all, it did say "To Be Continued" and "See You Next Time" at the end...)

In sum, though, if you saw the CN show and want a nice set, this is definitely the way to go. If you want to give it a try, Buy Vol. 1, which, containing the first 9 episodes is definitely enough to tell whether you like it or not (The "I'm hooked" point is around episode 4 for me, "When the Hot Ice Melts."). If you don't like it, you can resell it for probably $20 or so. I doubt you will, though. Outlaw Star is genuinely funny, occasionally thrilling and always interesting.
