Description:
Although it's only one element in a larger power struggle, the battle between rebellious alter-user Kazuma and disciplinarian HOLY officer Ryuho takes a dramatic and unexpected turn. The death of Kimishima, his only real friend, sends Kazuma on a quest for revenge; he confronts Ryuho, who hates him to the point of irrationality. The battle that ensues is so furious, it reconfigures the topography of the Lost Ground and causes both characters to disappear. Months later, Kanami waits for Kazuma to return, while Mimori and Scheris search for traces of Ryuho. Writer Yosuke Kuroda and director Goro Taniguchi begin highlighting some of the minor characters: superfast Cougar; gentle Tachibana; Elian, who commands extrasensory powers; Urizane, who travels via a disappearing watermelon; and the sinister Kyoi Mujo. Like cagey boxers, the filmmakers feint and weave, keeping the audience slightly off-balance with their unexpected maneuvers. (Rated 13 and older: violence, mild profanity) --Charles Solomon
