Summary: The subtle side of anime.
Review: I'm not exactly sure what initially possesed me to buy this movie, but I'm very glad I did. This is definitely not your typical anime. While many people expect gratuitous nudity and grotesque violence on an immence scale as the norm in anime, The Wings of Honneamise shatters those stereotypes with its focus on great storytelling and an environment that totally immerses the viewer for a truely great experience. The setting is a unique one as well, which tells the tale of a people trying to send a man into space with technology that is the equivalent of 1920-1930 America. Wings does a wonderful job of delving into the human mind, spirit, and faith; making it a good movie for people with these sorts of deep personal questions or anyone who just wants to examine the inner workings of a human being. This is a movie for anyone who enjoys an epic story, not just anime fans. I strongly suggest viewing this masterpiece, it is worth your time.

Summary: Stunning piece of work.
Review: In animation there are no accidental shots that work their way into the film, no unplanned lighting effects that make a scene, but instead every last detail is painstakingly planned and drawn. This hand-drawn movie was, and still is, a beautiful example of cinematography and animation as art. Its story lives up to the quality of the visuals, featuring a less-than-heroic main character who is widely regarded an incompetent thrust into a role he is incapable of satisfying as the first man to go into space. The perfect introduction to anime, and a good example of what anime can be beyond the sci-fi action of films like 'Akira' or 'Ghost in the Shell.' The English dub is passable if you don't want to read subtitles, so I always recommend subtitles to hear the original actors' emotion.

Summary: An anime that will have fans of RPGs getting into animes.
Review: The story is about The Royal Space Force, it is a special team of people that want to be the first into space. This is an alternate reality and alhtough the culture has excelled in some technology like weapons and other things they have not yet been into space. It is a lot like Final Fantasy 7 in that sense. The government is on the edge of war with another country and is not sure if they want to spend money on the space program. It depicts the training, which is very interesting, and it also shows the conflict between religion and science. It was a nice break from some of the "cutsie" and "violent sci-fi" animes that the market has been flooded with. Go check it out. I reccomend it highly.

Summary: Masterpiece. Brilliant. Breathtaking. Period.
Review: Honneamise was an Anime done by Studio Gainax, in 1988, with Yoshiuki Sadamoto doing character designs, Hideaki Anno as Animation director, Hiroyuki Yamaga as director/screenplay, and Ryuichi Sakamoto doing the music direction. This makes for one of the greatest movies ever. The anime has great and fluid visuals (such brilliant detail!), powerful story, and an awesome soundtrack (if you can locate it, email me!). Honneamise legitimized Gainax as one of the premier anime studios, alongside Ghibli, Madhouse, Sunrise, and Pierrot. That's good company to be alongside. Wings will leave you exhausted after watching it: there's nothing that can compare to it. No, I am not mincing words, but am just stating the facts. This really is unparalleled. I only hope that our politicans can see this film and realize that there are more things to concentrate on than their petty bickering.... END

Summary: Origin of Evangelion. GAINAX's first animation for theater
Review: Wings of Honneamise is the first theater version animation of GAINAX , which later creates Neon Genesis Evangelion. It was released in 1984 in Japan, directed by Hiroyuki Yamaga at that time age of 24. Even though it gained little success on busines base at that time, even today, well loved and supported. The stage is some other world, where no one still go outer space. In a poor and old-fashioned country, Royal Space Force is established to send man to outer space. Shiro, an lazy official there, inspired by a religious girl, volunteers to be the first man in space. After fighting all the political and international conspiracy, he goes outer space and sends profound message to people on earth. END

Summary: One of the most powerful films of all time.
Review: In an alternate reality, man is in the twilight of its first space flight. Or so it would seem... The Royal Space Force is a collection of glazed milatary rejects and slackers. Amid political backstabbing, social upheaval, and war; one astronaut finds a renewed sense of purpose in an unlikely place, and is determined to be the first man in space despite the remarkable odds against him. Combining stunning animation and a striking original soundtrack, The Wings of Honneamise is a unique and thought provoking film that creates an imaginary world in facinating detail. An 8 million dollar production undertaking the talents of 3000 animators, this films surpasses all pre-concived notions about animation. END

Summary: Well made science fiction, don't expect action
Review: I hate it when people complain about a lack of action in anime because they were expecting action, like those disappointed by "Patlabor" or "Ghost in the Shell". This is not an action film, it is a science fiction that resembles Andrew Niccol's "Gattaca" (1998) in some ways.

It's a slow moving story that takes place in an alternate earth, different from ours. Hostile, war-like countries search for excuses for combat. Technology in flight is advanced, yet space travel has not been achieved. The story focuses on the Royal Space Force, a low-budget, thrown-away research team trying to achieve space travel. The government, seeing no military advantage to the Royal Space Force's projects, do not take the Space Force seriously at all. Once the Royal Space Force is ready so send a man to space, Shirow Ladat is the only one to volunteer. The government, however, plan to use the launch as bait to force a neighbor country to declare war.

This film is great. The animation is very nicely done, and you can see much effort, research, and creativity (creating an alternate world is a daunting task) in this anime. Interesting concepts of fame, and an apocalyptic religion are presented in this. It has some flaws, and a useless attempted-rape scene which doesn't seem to plausable, but still is a great film to watch.

Summary: Fantastic Show...
Review: but the DVD just doesn't do it justice. Though the DVD is nice with special features, such as directors commentary (sub-titled of course), and the 4 minute preview movie that was used to get funding for it.

The overall quality of the DVD is pretty bad, at least on my Xbox. It there are just too many flaws to ignore in the first 5 minutes, don't know if it has to do with the compression or what.

Summary: 5 stars for everything
Review: Japanese animation scores not only on fantastic music and mind blowing graphics but also on the content and "Wings of Honneamise" is no exception its one great movie by director Hiroyuki Yamaga. The plot and graphics are very vividly picturised. I love every bit of this movie.
