Summary: Evangelion is the best anime series ever created!
Review: I don't know why alot of people are saying that the dvds are bad. I think that ADV did a good job on the dvd, as well as the dubb. I really enjoy Evangelion and reccommend it to any anime fan.

Review: When I started watching anime about four years ago, it was with the DragonBall Z series. It was an awesome series, just a few problems. 1:The storyline was so long and drawn out, 2:Too much senseless violence. In NGE, all my dreams were realized. A helluva storyline, way in-depth characters and awesome mechs called Eva's. Though I have only seen the first 4 episodes, I am truly hooked. I challenge anyone who reads this to go and buy the DVD and become amazed for yourself.

Review: I typically do not spend time to write reviews, since I have a hard enough time just finding time to watch my growing anime DVD collection (currently over 200 DVDs). However, I feel that I must write a few words regarding Neon Genesis Evangelion.My anime addiction began with Robotech. I've watched and appreciated most (if not all) of the best anime movies and series to date. Typically, I prefer to watch movies or short series because the longer series tend to get too drawn out and repetitive. A good example would be Slayers. The movie was great but I could barely finish the first half of the TV series (I already bought the Slayers Next DVD collection and it's been sitting on my shelf for quite a few months). Eva, however, does not have this problem. It gets better with every episode. While most series draw me to one character, practically all major characters and even some minor ones completely intrigue me. The character development is done with great ploy for all characters. I keep wanting to know more about them, only to crave for more when I get more. I'm usually not a big fan of mecha-type anime (Robotech was an exception), but Eva just blew me away! I highly recommend this series to anybody, anime fan or not. If you don't buy it, you should at least rent it...you owe yourself that much.

Summary: A great show.
Review: I think what surprised me most about this show is the characters. It demonstrates some of the best character design and development I have ever seen in a Anime series. This show isn't about the Mech battles. It is a show that has a story and people in it that you care about. As for the DVD itself, because this show is almost 6 years old, before DVD, it is pretty good. The sound is wonderful, with even the smallest of details being translated. Although there are no real Extras, the Japanese soundtrack is what most people will be buying this disc for. It has some really great vioce acting. And you get 4 EPISODES, which is TWICE as much as the VHS tapes. So I highly recommend this series on DVD.

Summary: Beautiful Anime, mediocre DVD
Review: Neon Genesis Evangelion is visually beautiful and impressive, fast paced, yet contains significant depth in the plot line. The first DVD in the series is unfortunately not a very good transfer, suffering from some visible MPEG artifacts. This has been corrected in the subsequent collections, so don't let it deter you. The extras on the disk consist of typical Anime trailers and really minimal character bios. Five stars for content, three stars for technical implementation.

Review: I originally had the series on VHS, and the first DVD in the series is no worse than the tape, transfer wise. If I was upset over anything, it's the limited bonus materials on the disc. I'm just glad I can finally have my EVA on a non-degradable media AND in the original soundtrack w/ subtitles. I haven't seen the region 2 disc that everyone keeps raving about, but I'm still very happy with my purchase. The show itself is wonderful, very exciting and intelligent. Your emotional investment definitely pays off in later episodes. Highly recommended for any anime fan.

Summary: Neon Genesis Evangelion: DVD Vol. 1
Review: Evangelion has been one of the most popular anime titles in the U.S. and the DVD makes things economical by putting the first two videos in one disk. the reason I gave it a 4 was first, while the transfer is great, it dosen't look any better than the video. It looks great, but one would expect better quality from a DVD. Second, the special features, which contains character bios, the DVD credits and a link to ADV's website needed to be expanded on too in my opinion. the bios only give a basic description of some of the characters and may have been better if they were expanded on. Interviews with the voice actors, translators, or the people of Gainax would have made better. Finally, the seane selections aren't placed in an organized way, such as at the beginning, the mid-point, and the end. it's in a way that #1 is the beginning, #2 is close to the middle of the episode, #3 is between the end and the midpoint and so on. While these aren't major problems, I still think it could have been done better. The story, which is about mankink facing divine judgement in the year 2015, is very good, better than most robot type anime and the characters are for once more important than the action itself. The animation is good, but uses still images in places in which people may become annoyed by the length of a shot (although it is done for the storyline itself). I would recommend this to anyone, even those not accustom to anime in general, THe characters are realistic, the story is the best and Neon Genesis Evangelion is totally addictive, kinda like a Soap Opera I guess.

Summary: Review of the series as a whole, for those thinking of buyin
Review: First off, I'm reviewing the series as a whole and the movie (The End of Evangelion, which I was able to see on a fansub tape) as well. This a great series for those who like to see mecha, and think at the same time. NGE has one of the most original plots I've seen (apart from the 15yr. old kid piloting a giant mecha). NGE is what one gets when mixing anime mecha and religion. Although it has some light-hearted moments (Pen-pen !), it has a very moody undertone from start to finish. The character development was excellent, from the enigmatic Rei to the arrogant Asuka. Aside from the apocalyptic battle with the angels, the story is about the characters, and how they feel about eachother, and ultimately themselves. The story is a veritable rollercoaster with soo many twists and turns, it'll leave your head spinning (that's a good thing). The answer to the mysteries surrounding the purpose of the angels, NERV, the EVA's,the second Impact are slowly unveiled to the viewer. But when they are finally fully revealed (especially finding out who Rei Ayaname is, and why she is the way she is) it'll drop your jaw. There are a couple of gripes I have about this otherwise great series. The ending(s) are overly complicated. The end to the series seemed hurried, and while concluding a part of what NGE is about (Shinji Ikari dealing with how he feels about his father, friends, and himself), it left much to be desired. If you can somehow get The End of Evangelion, I'd reccomend watching that and watching the final episodes as a sort of epilogue. The movie seemed more conclusive, but is a veritable mindf**k.It took me a couple of replays to understand (for the most part). But I was satisfied by both endings to this monumentous series. If you are planing to buy this, you need to be willing to buy the rest of the series. As long as you watch with an open mind, and don't mind a little (ok ok, a LOT !) brain-exercise, you shouldn't be dissappointed.

Summary: Good but be wary of the hype
Review: This was a good first four episodes, with the emphasis on character development evident immediately. But at least at this beginning point this series is surprisingly unpolished and unsophisticated, with overwrought and rather silly moments that would seem out of place in most videogames, never mind a purportedly sophisticated anime series. The video was overall well-done, with the oft-mentioned English overlays working well in places, distracting in others (it looked really out of place superimposed on an animated TV newscast, for example). As for audio, the English dub was confusing, while the subtitles worked very nicely. And the Japanese voice actors matched better as well. The extras are nice, with ADV giving true video previews for a dozen titles, not just static sales screens a la Manga or Pioneer. All in all, as someone interested in anime but not obssessed by it, I'll pass on the rest of this series (back to Serial Experiments and the feature films Patlabor 2, Ghost in the Shell, etc). But it is certainly worth trying out as I did rather than dismissing out of hand. After all, 3 stars means that a decent viewing experience is to be had, and these first 4 episodes end at a fairly clean point.
