Review: neon genesis hype pulled me into buy volume 1 and 4. altho the characters are likable and believable, i find the series weighed down with too much dialogue and political play. ... simply because the characters are more well developed in the comic books - the dvd doesnt permit it due to time constraints on each episode! also each episode gets tedious the evas kill one angel after another...

Review: neon genesis hype pulled me into buy volume 1 and 4. altho the characters are likable and believable, i find the series weighed down with too much dialogue and political play. to tell u the truth i also bought the neon g comic books and they were wayyyy more intersting than the dvds! simply because the characters are more well developed in the comic books - the dvd doesnt permit it due to time constraints on each episode! also each episode gets tedious the evas kill one angel after another.please rent it from video store first before deciding to buy or not! Summary: Evangelion itself stands strong among all Anime
Review: Many people would agree, even some of those who are still trying to piece together what it's all about, that Evangelion is one of the best Anime series out there. It's basicly the most heavily-plotted Anime that I personally have seen. In my opinion, no offese intended toward anyone, the only people who I've seen dislike it either just aren't Anime or Mecha fans, or those who just don't like to take the time to get involved in it to find out what it all means. Keep in mind, that is only my opinion.
I strongly suggest you look into it, if you like strongly-plotted and sometimes intentionally confusing Anime that throws you into the middle of a storyline and slowly pans itself out... and that lets you see big Mecha-style creatures rip eachother appart every now and then, but that's just the *Side-show* :-)

Summary: Great Anime, Poor Technical Quality!
Review: Evangelion is surely one of the best animes ever made, but this DVD series are flaw in quality. The original anime was made in Japan ( 29.97 frames per second NTSC ) then it was "restorated" in germany ( 25 FPS PAL, needed transcoding, that interpolates and mixes frames ) and it came back to U.S. where it was converted to NTSC again ( more intepolation and loss of resolution and color added). The final result is an image full of transcoding artifacts and with poor color. I was told by a person from ADV films that they are remastering the DVD using original japanese masters. That will surelly improve the quality of the series and make it worth purchasing. Until then, I'll watch it on TV.

Summary: Waiting for things to make sense
Review: This anime seems to be very highly recommended by nearly everyone. I am sorry to say that I have a very different opinion of this show. Granted it is not your typical boy-pilots-giant-mecha, as this show focuses on character development instead of action. One may think that a high level of character development would be a good thing, but it is very tedious here. First and foremost, I did not like any of the characters in this show. Experience with other anime programs has led me to identify with characters like Spike (Cowboy B) and Vash (Trigun). Don't expect any prototype heros in Evangelion because there are none. It is like a bad episode of Jerry Springer. I do not doubt that this anime will be very satisfying for a large audience of anime fans, but I would like to warn anyone who is expecting this to be another gundam show. I liked Cowboy Bebop, I liked Trigun, I liked Outlaw Star, I liked Lodoss War, I absolutely hated Evangelion.

Summary: My Favorite Anime Television Series
Review: Although, unfortunately, it hasn't air in the U.S. (yet), through buying DVDs and renting at the local Blockbuster this series has become my favorite Japanese-animated series. With 26 episodes, Evangelion has lovable characters, cool robot-mech vs. giant alien battles in Tokyo-3, the must-have attractive anime girls and a good, not neccessarily original, story to it. Go out and buy collection 0:1 and get started on this exciting anime series today.

Summary: Above Average Anime
Review: I feel kinda guilty about adding another review to the hundreds already out there, but I can't resist adding my two cents to this sort of thing... At first glance, Neon Genesis Evangelion (often known as Eva to its fans) is a typical giant robot show: 15-year-old kid gets in robot, fights other robot, repeat ad infinitum. But at some crucial points this anime adds some truly inventive stuff to give it the extra boost to stand out from the crowd. The story revolves around fifteen-year-old Shinji Ikari, whose mother is dead and whose father abandoned him years ago. The year is 2015, and in a nutshell, the world has been ravaged by the comet which caused the "Second Impact", killing off roughly half of the world's population. The world--and the city of Tokyo-3 in particular--is now meanced by creatures called Angels, and the United Nations has set up a bastion of resistance, called NERV, to defeat them. NERV's plan involves giant robots called Evangelions, which can be piloted by a select few children--one of whom is Shinji. Shinji's father calls him to NERV headquarters, where he is instructed to pilot one of the robots against an encroaching Angel. I'll stop there, because if you want a really detailed plot summary there are innumerable places to get one. Let's talk technical/artistic aspects for the rest of this review. The disc looks sharp; the colors are bright and don't bleed to any noticable extent, especially if you're not looking for visual flaws. I might note that some of the animation itself seems a little too smooth in places, but it's a problem I can easily forgive. One thing that begs comment is the robot design. Most robots (as in Gundam) are boxy humanoid contraptions. While the robots of Evangelion still bear a human's shape (or at least, most of them do), that's where the resemblence ends. The Angels are what struck me the most: rather than presenting a monster-of-the-week sort of design, some genuine thought seems to have gone into the look and effects of each enemy. Every Angel presents a slightly different hazard, and forces the pilots to rise to its challenge. The Evangelion itself is particularly startling. While it is probably the most humanoid of the selection of creatures, it is not so in the box-like style of most robots. Evangelion (especially Shinji's Unit-01) is a lithe creation that seems composed of sinew and blood--and, as one sequence on this disc hints, perhaps it is. Somewhat surprisingly, it is not the giant robots, but the people inside them, who prove to be the ultimate focus of Evangelion. Each one has their own dark secrets and black memories, and in true anime style each one has at least one deep character flaw. And yet they interact with each other in a way that seems very real--and almost every viewer will see a disquieting little bit of themselves in one or two of them. Neon Genesis Evangelion is probably the anime which has founded the largest camps I've ever seen between lovers and haters--sometimes it seems there's no middle ground. But in short, if you enjoy anime, at least give this series chance. ~

Summary: not heroic, only humane
Review: A very emotional story of an introvert kid who constantly battles with himself to overcome his lack of self-worth, and of those who struggle to survive in treacherous land.
NGE provides you with interesting and easily indentifiable characters, good amount of mushiness, but also a good dose of occasional humor.
Only thing that bothers me though is English dubbing, which seems sometimes out of character, especially Shinji's, because his English voice doesn't quite deliver his nature that is shy and unsure. Or maybe it's because i've heard that voice from other animes often as characters who are quite the opposite. But i got used to it as i went along. On the other hand, i must mention that Rei's English voice is fantastic. It almost gives you chills because you can just hear from the voice the hollowness and almost invisible existance with which Rei carries herself.

Summary: An incredible waste of time
Review: This video came so highly rated, I was disappointed. It is juvenile, plotless and pointless. I enjoy Japanese animation and expected better. There are some great masters of story making in Japan, but the creators of this series are not amoung them.
