Summary: Battousai-pleasing transfer of a great series
Review: Enough people have reviewed the content of the series so I will just add technical snippets to all DVD-mongers out there. But it *is* a great series... if not as satisfying as Neon Genesis Evangelion or Macross.

My equipment: Sony DVP-S7000 DVD Player (1997 Reference), Loewe Planus 33" DTV, Denon 3300 receiver, NHT 2.5i front speakers, Klipsch dipole surrounds

I did not encounter any problems during playback. The picture of the transfer was great. There were no hiccups or pops in motion, nor audio pops. The subtitles are clear but sometimes the letters fade when a bright white background is shown: the outlines of the letters could be a bit darker - my only complaint about the quality of the picture. Now, only if I had a progressive DVD player... (redundant, I think - considering my TV is a progress-scan monitor which upscales the resolution)

It is unfortunate that the anime subtitling/distribution companies do not remix serials for 5.1. The original Japanese dialog sounded fine in both stereo and surround sound modes. Even the English dubbing is bearable compared to some other efforts (such as ADV's dubbed versions of Evangelion).

Overall, this is a quality release of anime on DVD. Highly recommended for DVD collectors, otakus, and Japanese history buffs out there.

Summary: Rurouni Kenshin
Review: This Anime is definately one of the best I've ever seen. Why only the 3 star rating? I've seen both the subtitled version before, but I bought the DUBBED version. The subtitled version deserves at least 10 stars if that were an option. In the English version, quite a bit is screwed up. They simply changed Kenshin's "Oro?!" to huh? or what?, and he's not referred to as a Rurouni or a Hitokiri. But hey, I can deal with that. What really bothered me about the Dubbed version were the voices. Karou's replacement can't sing the theme song. Kenshin's voice is always cracking and his dead serious tone never comes through. And, as mentioned in one of the previous reviews, they didn't see any problem with giving one of the waitresses a southern accent.

Even so, the excellent plot and artwork still shine through making this an above average Anime even with the dubbing. At any rate, to stress my point, GET THE SUBTITLED VERSION.

Summary: A fun anime title
Review: This is an entertaining movie, although I imagine that it would be most suitable for a young audience. Although recommended for an audience of 13 or older (on the box), the comedy and drama presented would most likely find greatest favor amongst early teens or younger, with little previous exposure to anime. This is not to accuse the film of weakness in substance; the characterization is stylish and the episodes are fairly charming. I would consider this title a good choice as a gift for a young boy, if the gifter is not adverse to some animated violence (very little blood and no gore, but some broken bones).

Summary: Great anime series, but dvd could be improved..
Review: Overall, the quality of the source material was pretty good, but there was noticeable shimmering and some artifacting on screen. Subtitles were bright white/black background and very ledgeable. As for language tracks, the Japanese track was definitely louder and clearer than the US dub.The US dubbing for the most part was good overall though their choice for Kenshin's voice wasn't very good. Or the fact that they gave one character working in a Japanese restaurant a southern belle accent totally seemed out of place. This series ranks up there with Escaflowne, Evangelion, and Fushigi Yugi up until the Shishio story arc ends. After that, it becomes much like DBZ and just drags on. But thats not till way later. So, until then we are treated with a great series that develops some good characters and gives us fighting fans some great entertainment.

Summary: There is no excuse.
Review: Kenshin is the best Anime series ever, hands down. There is no excuse for not owning Rurouni Kenshin in all its glory on DVD. The music, story, and animation is wonderful. The subtitled translation gets a bit sketchy at times, but takes very little away from the enjoyability of this series.

Summary: If you Love Anime, you will LOVE Kenshin
Review: Himura Kenshin was a lengendary assassin (hitokiri) during the war in Japan that brough forth the Meiji Era. Near the end of the war, he disappeared. Kenshin decided to give up his killing ways and become a wonderer who protects people in order to atone for all his sins of killing. The story starts some years after the new government was in place and starts a story revolving around Kenshin that is grepping like no other series.

The plot of the series is absolutely wonderful! No other anime series I know has a plot comparable to it (and believe me I watch a LOT of anime). Many apects of the story are taken from real life including certain characters, fight moves and historical events. The plots involves the clash of the old era and the new government, the clash in Kenshin's own mind between his killer side and his wonderer side, the people living in the new era who do not want to accept the new government and those people who want to protect and make the new era a wonderful one (aka Kenshin and others) - it is a tightly knitted story that absolutely takes your breath away.

The characters in this series are believable and each has his/her own strong personality and depth of character.

As far as the artwork is concerned, it is absolutely beautiful! The music is incredibly wonderful as well and extremely fitting to the various scenes.

The first 4 espisodes contains introduction to various important characters. The first episode introduces Kenshin and another main character. It is a wonderful introduction like no other! The second episode introduces another main character. The 3rd espisode contains some politics with a little plot revoling around Kenshin - it develops Kenshin's character and give the viewer glimpses into his core character. The 4th episode is one cool introduction to yet another important character in the plot. It might sound boring that all there is are introductions but the introductions are embedded in a great plot and is not boring at all. Just these few episodes will be enough to get you hooked!

Try out Kenshin :)!

Summary: By Far, the Best Show Ever!
Review: I've seen this whole series, the OVA, and the movie, all fansubbed, and I must say, it's my favorite show of any kind ever. It has it all, action, characters you actually care about, romance, comedy, and evil. There is a hero you fall in love with and really care about what happens to him, and his friends. I give this my highest possible reccomendation. I wish I could give more than 5 stars. The greatness of Rurouni Kenshin must be seen to be believed.

Summary: By far the best anime series ever
Review: I have to admit I cannot think of a better series than Rurouni Kenshin. DBZ does not have the plot line nor the animation "quality" of this. Ranma is a different story all together. It is a story of a man tormented by his past. He has been living life for the past ten years as a "rurouni", or wandering swordsman, in the hopes that one day he will be able to make up for all of his killings. While the storyline and plot is intense, the story still gives people a view of everyday Japanese life in the late 1800s with all the comedy you could ask for. I dont know how to explain the feeling that one gets watching the series, but I can say it is well worth whatever they are asking. The only thing I fear is the american company that is doing the translating and dubbing. Media Blasters is a "pretty good" company in this respect. To combat this one must buy the subtitled version or the DVD that has both. If you are new to anime or if this is a "new series" you are getting interested in, this would be a purchase that will make you smile. I really cannot say enough about this anime. Well done on the animators part!

Summary: Best Anime of the 20th Century!
Review: Ruroni Kenshin is an experiance. The type of anime that doesn't come along frequently. The series starts out strong, goes into an average(never below average)state in the middle, and ends strong. and unlike most anime series out there,it does end.Art and animation wise its only second to escaflwone, you know it had a good budget backing it up.character design is the best PERIOD.and the cast is large, you get a new entry almost every episode.but where this gem realy shines is the story, set in 18th century Japan.the story revolves around Kenshin,a wandering ronin with a mysterios past.In truth he is the batusai, the undefeated assasin who helped overthrow the goverment ten years earlier but disappeared afterwards. The directing raises the quality of this anime even more.I realy can't praise this enough, the only advise I can give you is to watch the subtitled version.

Summary: The best anime, technically at least
Review: Rurouni Kenshin definitely one of the best, if not the best, anime series ever made. The most amazing thing about Kenshin is less the plot than the graphics, music and overall technical excellence. The battle scenes are absolutely spectacular, and coupled with great music and the deep psycological conflicts between the adversaries, Kenshin has established itself as one of the best, of all time.
