Summary: I can't recommend the Utena DVD highly enough.
Review: Revolutionary Girl Utena is one of the best examples of shojo anime out there, and one of the more "unique" titles you'll ever see, with some pretty off-beat relationships between characters and highly stylized artwork. It should be on any anime fan's shelf, and at half the price of the VHS tapes, the DVD is definitely the way to go. With subs and dubs on the same disc (IMO the excellent Japanese voice acting makes the sub the way to go), everyone is happy. If you like shojo anime, or are just looking for something different, buy this DVD!

Review: This DVD is great! There are 7 episodes on the DVD, for just a little more than the price of one VHS tape. You get the subbed, dubbed and raw japanese versions, plus some extra goodies. And every episode has the opening and ending with it, which is something that was missing from the Lodoss Wars DVD set. Also, it is a non-region disk, which means it will play in all regions. (or at least it says it is)

Review: Utena was the *first* anime I ever watched. I saw the first video at my friend's house and was just like "Need... more... of... cartoon... in... pink... box..." I eventually got it... and now can't go a single day without Utena. *turns up volume as the duel song from episode 5 plays [mental voice: Miki's duel!!!!]* That reminds me... the music, not only is there a new song almost every episode, but they are *good* and have the weirdest topics. Some of them can even help you study for tests! (Eh?) Paelozoic of the Body, episode 2. Anyways, Utena is *not* the kind of show that you can watch late at night. It makes you *think* as apposed to falling into a drooling trance/puddle as bright colors go by... No, wait, that happens, too. But thinking is necessary to have any idea what's going on. Watching it usually means rewatching parts. (Special parts?) No, go away. *mutter* Weird-o voice... *cough* Now, before I go... "If the chick does not break out of it's shell, the chick will die without ever truly being born. We are the chick, the world is our egg. If we do not break out of the world's shell, we will die without ever truly being born. Smash the world's shell, for the sake of the world revolution!" Just a sample...

Review: I've seen quite a many animes in my time, but Utena is definitely the strangest. I personally find it to fake to believe. It's cute and everything, just really REALLY strange. First time viewers may want to really consider trying this one before spending the money for it.

Review: Revoloutionary Girl Utena, also known as Shoujo Kakumei Utena is one of the most daring animes I have ever come across. This anime was released in the U.S. in 1997, and it has one of the most fastest growing fandom of any anime I've ever heard of. The anime is an absolute enchantment! So... Stop waiting for YOUR own prince, this is a total relieve of your hard work. I wouldn't be surprised if all you had was 84.95 or less, and you spent it all on THIS box set! It's worth the spending. Get Shoujo Kakumei Utena TODAY! It'll totally change your mind on believing fairy tales!

Summary: From light & fluffy to dark & sinister...I loved this show!!
Review: One of the most intricately written animes I've ever watched; one of the most fun comedies I've ever enjoyed; one of the most intriguing horror stories I've ever experienced; one of the most captivating depictions of evil I've ever seen! By the time the hidden truth behind the plot is revealed, the story has grown to almost epic proportions. It's not just about good or evil *people* ... it's about Good or Evil itself!A Junior High girl finds herself being drawn ever deeper into a strange series of ritual Duels for possession of the mysterious "Rose Bride." Whoever is engaged to the Bride, it is said, will inherit "The Power Of Miracles, the Power To Revolutionize the World." Motivated by a dimly remembered childhood meeting of fate with a strange Prince, Utena fights to protect the Bride from those who would use (abuse) her for their own pleasure or goals. But Utena doesn't accurately remember what really happened between her and her Prince, and some of the Student Council know more than they pretend... One of the challenges of watching this show is trying to figure out what it's all about. The writers string the viewer along, tantalyzing the audience with a wonderfully surreal fantasy-like Academic Academy where the rules are never quite explained, but everything is just like the modern world ... almost. From floating castles and magical swords to swirling roses and burning coffins, from secret societies and mysterious benefactors to forbidden forests and lost loves, nothing is what it seems, and the list of who you think you can trust grows shorter, and shorter, and shorter... The questions continue to mount, almost relentlessly, while the writers refuse to give away any information. Eventually, viewers must learn to take this world at face value and have faith that all will be explained in the end. Viewers who do so will not be disappointed. The payoff is powerful ... and startling! The ending was worth every trial encountered in reaching it! Rarely have I been so surprised by the "surprises." I couldn't see it coming ... any of it! It was shocking, and incredible. It was absolutely great! Let us all just hope that the currently released tapes sell well enough that episodes #14 through #39 (the end) get liscensed and released soon. It would be awful for those who get their anime solely from American sources to be cut off at episode #13! The show hasn't even gotten dark yet at that point! It is easy to be put off by the stylized setting or character designs. It is easy to look at the character desings & dismiss this show as being "fluffy." It is easy to watch the first few episodes and believe this show is for children, girls, or fans of the "magical girl" genre. This would be a mistake. This is a mature, almost frightenly accurate examination of what it takes to break people ... to bring out their darkest motives and convince them to sell their soul. I have seen a room full of adults roll with laughter, cheer with elation and shiver with horror at this show. I loved it, but by the end, I felt like I was trapped inside "The Screwtape Letters," & couldn't get out! One caveat: Because the dialogue is so meticulously crafted, because the precise wording and double-meanings are so critical, it is more important with this show than with most animes to have an accurate *translation,* as opposed to a *paraphrase.* I have seen both the sub and dub now, and since the subtitled version is predominantly a translation, and the dubbed version is, unfortunately, more of a paraphrase, it matters more with this show than with most that the viewer be aware that the English is not always an entirely faithful adaptation of the original, and that some meaning (sometimes quite a bit) will be lost.

Summary: Not your everyday anime.
Review: This is one of the most subtle, intricate, and intreging shows that I have ever seen. So do *not* let the first episode temp you into thinking that this show is *fluffy*. The story pivots around an incident that happened to Utena when she was young. She doesn't remember what really happened, but other characters have varying amounts of information about it, and use that to try to manipulate the outcome of the show. (Reading the true motives of the characters in this setting is next to impossible, and an almost demonic sense of manipulation and paranoia descends upon the cast as the show progresses.) Friends who have seen the show in it's entirety tell me that everything clicks into a frightenly clear and desperate endgame when the show actually does tell the audience what the backstory is about. They also tell me that all of the clues needed to solve the mystery are there in the first episodes, but the odds of figuring it out ahead of time are next to nothing. Good luck. :) Add to that a gorgeous art style, and deep character development, and mix well for an incredible series.

Review: when i saw this i could not stop laughing it was sooo cute and funny! the pink hair, the roses and the animation is what makes it a Great movie to watch with you're friends or family.
