Summary: Pryor At The Top Of His Powers
Review: If you've only seen his Hollywood films, you have not seen the real Richard Pryor. Mining his own life for his material, he takes death, sex, and race head-on--and makes you helpless with laughter while he does it. There isn't a false note anywhere in this performance. Before you declare Chris Rock (or anybody else, for that matter) a comic genius, you better see this movie.

Summary: I Still Crack Up...
Review: It has been at least 15 years since I last saw this particular Richard Pryor performance and he still cracks me up. It is refreshing to get this on DVD because now I can share the absolute brillance of a comic mastermind with my Gen X Nieces and Nephews. None of the new comics can capture real life moments like Pryor. His facial expressions alone are worth the price of admission. Richard, live long and prosper, Brother!

Summary: There has never been a better performance!
Review: It's clear that NO other comedian in a live stand-up show can equal to "Richard Pryor Live in Concert". This was a rare magical night when everything went right. Amazingly, he put 100% plus into this comedy act and it shows!

Known for his observational humor, he takes on his family with respect, like the bit with his grandmother's funeral. In his act, he seems to show little more respect for women than some comedians do. Pryor pokes a lot of fun at himself, his wife and the law. While he has a huge stage to himself, he uses it for some very funny physical routines that warrant its use.

He brilliantly takes on the voices of many characters and furthermore, he interjects the voice and thoughts of his dogs, and monkeys and he even takes on the voice of internal pain if you are not in shape. He also becomes the voice of body parts, such as the hilarious words from his heart (the organ while experiencing a heart attack.) It is funny to hear him when, vocally, he imitates the "white person."

He doesn't display the angst many of black comedians do, that is why his humor works for many! Yes, there is profanity, but he is NOT as disgusting or crude as so many others. Like most comedians of his type, there are always the sex routines.

To say this is funny is an understatement. It is hysterical with nonstop laughter throughout. Some routines are his fear of swimming, running to be in shape, the Chinese stutterer, in the woods, boxing, and his role as a parent, that classic bit when he finds his kid in a lie.

This 1979 90-minute performance is a classic! It's easy to see why Pryor is a major influence on the best comedians around....(...)

Review: It's safe to say that NO other live stand-up comedy show can equal to "Richard Pryor Live in Concert", not even his others. This was a rare magical night when everything went right. Amazingly, he put more than 100% into this comedy act and it shows! Richard Pryor commands the entire stage for his outstanding physical performance.

Known for his observational humor, he shares insight into his family and with his grandmother. In his act, he seems to show just a little more respect for women than some comedians brash do. Pryor pokes a lot of fun at himself, his troubles with his wife and the law. His humor works for a variety of people regardless of ethnicity!

He brilliantly takes on the voices of many characters and furthermore, he interjects the voice and thoughts of his dogs, and monkeys and he even takes on the voice that attacks the heart (experiencing a heart attack). He translates to us the voice of body parts. Pryor is hilarious at imitating the white man, vocally and physically.

Yes, there is profanity, but he is NOT as disgusting or crude as so many others. Like most comedians of his type, there are always the sex routines and his are acceptable without being harsh or crude.

To say this is funny is an understatement. It is hysterical with nonstop laughter throughout. Some routines are his fear of swimming, running to be in shape, the Chinese stutterer, in the woods, boxing, grandmother and cocaine, and his role as a parent - that classic bit when he finds his kid in a lie.

Summary: that's no dog.
Review: My favorite parts of this movie are the ease with which Richard gets into the heads and talks about animals, from the monkey to the dogs and the horses and the dog that comes over to help richard mourn the loss of the monkey and leaves telling him he's going to chase him again tomorrow. He gets very personal in terms of drugs and heart attacks and its very funny in a somewhat warped way. Also quite touching. They say Richard set the stage for Eddie and chris Rock and all of them, and this is true, good, self-deprecating and funny standup stuff. The funniest I've ever seen Richard Pryor.

Summary: Comic genius!!
Review: No one has ever done it better... and probably never will. The timing and just overall reality of his humor is perfect. He can find humor in things we are generally scared to even deal with or talk about. He makes you feel like you were there. This was pre-burn Pryor at his best... yeah, it was back before his African trip when he denounced the usage of the 'N' word (you'll hear it in almost every sentence on this one) but his takes on seemingly everyday things is what makes him a genius. If you want to laugh hard, and aren't scared to see things the way they are, get this.

Summary: Pure gold
Review: Of all his concert movie. This one is a pure gem. You will laugh as hard or as long in your life. Please, check your blood pressure after seeing this one.

Summary: Material 5 stars; Mastering no stars
Review: One can't say enough about how really funny this concert is. This concert shows Richard Pryor at his very best. There are so many bits, including "The Heart Attack," "Shooting the car," "The Pet Monkey," that it's unfair to begin to list the laugh-so-hard-that-you're-crying material. Now, to the bad news. The mastering of this tape is the worst I've ever seen. Period, bar none. While the picture is acceptable (obviously no time or expense to improve on the VHS product), it is the sound that is really disconcerting. A good half of the DVD, the sound is out of sync with the picture (I know this because I returned my first copy as being defective and got a new one that was exactly the same). It is unforgivable to see the lack of care that was put into this product. No extra features of notable mention. It is trully a shockingly poor representation of one of the all-time great comedians at his comic best.

Summary: classic standup; technically poor.
Review: One of the all-time greatest stand-ups is dealt an injustice with this poor transfer to DVD. The poorly compressed video causes a very annoying "lag" as Pryor moves about the stage--his hair seems to moves moments after the rest of his body. My VHS copy taped from cable years ago looks better. Still, it's easily the funniest 90 minutes of stand-up you'll ever see. Alone, Pryor's performance earns this 5 stars, docked two stars for the poor quality. This performance deserves better!
