Summary: It beats Virus and Episode 1, but does that say anything?
Review: For the Sci-Fi's of '99 go, The Matrix was the best. It's competitors being Virus and Episode 1, says nothing for the film anyway. It has some cool sequences, but not enough to fulfill the shoes as such classics as Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgement Day did. It deserves an award for CGI effects, but thats not to say the films great or anything. It's hurt by overlongness, slowness and overall confusion beyong being creative. Don't buy it unless you really, really loved it. I didn't.

Summary: Great, but not perfect!
Review: What can be said for this film? Anything about its amazing action sequences, its wonderful direction, its startling bullet-time shots, its magnificent fighting scenes, anything would be too little, unless you've seen this masterpiece. The Wachowski brothers have certainly done a remarkable job here (and the DVD is not short on extras either!). But I couldn't watch the whole movie more than, say, twice. I can watch the fighting scenes as many times as I can take, but not the whole movie. Sure the first or second (or even third) time you're eager to see it all, to find out what's going on. That's why you want to hear every little word spoken. But after that, the film bores you, and watching again any scene but the fighting ones becomes impossible. That "sssymetry" that characterizes the Matrix, is the reason I gave it 4 and not 5 stars.

Summary: Simple minded
Review: I believe i figured out whysome people like this movie, and some people don't. I have it on DVD, and watch it often. I find that most of the people that don't like the movie can't comprehend the true plot of the movie. They aren't able to accept that, or simply don't understand that, something else could be behind the scenes and in control of our lives. If you don't like the movie, and think you understand it, don't adventure to the deep end of the pool while swimming.

Summary: Matrix Does Not Live Up to Hype
Review: Only good scene were the karate scenes, but that can't save this slow and cerebreal bore of a picture. Phantom Menace should have won best effects.

Summary: The Matrix~ awesome movie
Review: The Matrix is a movie with excellent special effects. Starring Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne, the movie takes place around the year 2099. In that time the world had been taken over by one of mans creations. A.I. Artificial Intellegance. These Androids/Robots have enslaved human kind into being their Power sources. All of the human race has been put into a computer generated world called the matrix. A band of free people that are not plugged into the matrix are working hard to free the others and destroy the A.I. so that humans can take back control of the Earth. The only remaining Human city is Zion. Situated near the core of the earth where it is still warm. Unfortunatly they do not show Zion in the movie. But myself and many others out there are hoping for sequils. And if they make sequils I hope they will be good and not cheesy like many other sequils to movies. Many people don't like The Matrix because they don't entirely understand the concept and story line. Some stuff I talk about won't make sense until you see the movie. If you love Top notch special effects, great story lines, and excellent actors. Then THE MATRIX is the movie for you!

Summary: A deep prophetic vision of 21st century techno-collectivism
Review: It is thought provoking to say the least, though this movie is way out there. I'm no anti-tech luddite, but is this frightening world at all resembling the future were heading to? It is thought provoking. While people are in awe over the special effects, I'm in awe over the future and the whole dystopian premise of the movie, I find it a bit too new agey. The main character is basically cast as some kind of messianic savior of humanity who seeks to liberate man from the machine. Somewhat kooky, new agey and nihilistic. I've only seen it twice, so I wasn't exactly enamored by it. Is the matrix tenable? Read 'The Age of Spiritual Machines' about artificial intelligence developments and the future. Beastly self-aware computer systems like the Matrix seem to make HAL from Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey look fairly tame.

Summary: techno lovestory set in a grotty digitally controlled future
Review: In a story with a convoluted plot set in the 1990s about machines controlling peoples imaginations so they think they are in the 1990s when they are actually plugged into a huge computer programme running sometime in the 23rd century, a computer hacker called Neo wants to know "what is the matrix ?". Along comes Trinity played by the fit Carrie-Anne Moss to recruit Neo to the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar, a hover craft crewed by a resistance force of humans trying to defeat the control of the machines. Is Neo the One?, the prophesised hero who will take back control from the machines, or is he just another guy ? The first half of the film is all about setting up the sceanario for the second half, Neo taking on the machines. Full of funky views on what is reality and a fairly grim view of the future, the Matrix is a movie about the love that grows between Neo and Trinity while in their struggle with the machines.

Summary: Not Your Typical Sci-Fi
Review: Since I'm not what can be called a fan of sci-fi or Keanu Reeves, I wasn't sure this movie would be for me. Was I ever wrong! 'The Matrix' is the complete package: stunning, mind-bending special effects, perfect casting, brilliant directing, and a story that stands on its own.

The visual effects are truly a marvel to view, and deservedly won an Oscar in this category. Fortunately, there's 26 'bonus' minutes of footage at the end of the film explaining how much of it was done.

Keanu Reeves is perfectly cast as Neo in this film- he excels at looking confused and has (thankfully) minimal dialogue. He does have a great physique which makes for a fantastic 'action-hero'. Laurence Fishburne turns in a fine performance as the cryptic Morpheus; his voice alone keeps one's attention in a way reminiscent of James Earl Jones'. The real 'star' of the film, though, is Carrie-Ann Moss, who lights up the screen as Trinity. Beautiful, smart and independent, she gives this film a soul and prevents it from crossing into a stereotypical sci-fi 'annihilate the bad guys' film filled with techno-babble.

This is a film which *must* be seen more than once in order to fully appreciate all the hints and clues given early on in the film. Not only is a second viewing necessary, but it's enjoyable- again, the special effects are magnificent and have to be seen to be believed. It's definitely a film you shouldn't miss!

Review: This movie is and outstanding account of cyberworld philosophy mixed with high-tech action elements. If you are a nerd, a thinker, a computer gamer or scientist, your entertainment won't come much better than this.
